Here is the story of Ahilya according to the Valmiki Ramayan:

Ahilya is not in the form of a stone according to Valmiki Ramayan. Instead she is in invisible form. She retains her original form as soon as Lord Ram's eyes fall on her.

Gautam Rishi had gone for his daily bath. Taking advantage of his absence, Indradev assumed the form of Gautam Rishi and asked Ahilya to seek union with him.
Even on recognising him to be Indradev, disguised as Gautam Rishi, the misguided Ahilya set her heart upon Indra in eagerness to embrace the rulers of gods.
Suddenly the real Gautam Rishi appeared. He cursed Indradev that he would be shorn of his testicles. He also cursed his wife Ahilya as follows - "You will stay here for many thousands of years without food or drink, living on air, and remain lying on ashes full of remorse. You will dwell in this hermitage unperceived by all creatures. When, however, Shri Ram, son of King Dasartha visits this fearful grove, then you will be absolved of from your sin."
On the command of Sage Vishvamitra, Ram and Lakshman enter the hermitage. As soon as Lord Ram's eyes fall on invisible Ahilya, she gets back her pristine celestial form.
Ram and Lakshman touch Ahilya's feet and seek her blessings.
Ahilya offers water to wash Ram and Lakshman's feet and hands.
Gautam Rishi comes there and accepts Ahilya back

Yeah That was in the old Ramayan in this one she is sent to heaven saint Gautam was ever seen again

Umm we will never come to know abt what actually happened at that time but My heart goes with the RCM story because Ahilya was one of the five major Mahasatis of our Mythology ever known and I hold deep respect and sympathy for her from inside, Imagining that she had done the union with Indra willingly in completely undigestable for me!

Some of the Versions even say that Gautam rishi actually never cursed her but only rejected her as his wife, Ahilya herself got hurt by Indra's treachery and her husband's rejection that she became stone cold. And remained like that forever till Ram's feet didnt touch and purified her!

So according to this version also she was deep guilty for what indra had done to her without her knowing!
