Heroine & Barfi - Bad decision by UTV?

This seems to be the common consensus by many on twitter.
Both Barfi and Heroine are UTV Production films and they chose to release them a week apart.
With the positive WOM, Barfi had more than enough potential to continue doing even more business, but BOI predicts that Heroine's wide release (about 2400 screens) will dampen those prospects.

Similarly, Barfi's smooth glide will definitely eat into Heroine's initial business and most people (especially multiplex family audiences) would wanna check it out next weekend due to WOM.

Seems like UTV might have thought:

Barfi for classes - Primarily multiplexes
Heroine for masses - Primarily Single Screens

Yayy, lets make a lotta money.

Smart choice?

Not at all

How can they assume heroine to be for single screens only? madhur's movies generally cater the multiplexes. Its not a salman khan's movie that they assume for single screens and i say this with great amount of respect for both the types.

correct me if i am wrong?

I think UTV did not expect Barfi to do very well. Also, Heroine may be an excellent movie, but i hope it does not take away Barfi's audience. Barfi is lyrical, and it deserves all the success it is able to get.

Koiza their promotions have been completely geared towards single screens.

Lets see:

Item Number - Check
Hot Heroine - Check
Lots of glam - Check
Intimate/shocking Scenes - Check
Title Track with skin show - Check

That's been the promotions so far. I think everyone's noticed that they're replaying the same clips over and over again. If you dig through like ten Heroine promos, you find the clips I've used in my siggy for like 3 seconds.

I think UTV just wanted to release both the films somehow, the way both the films were delayed like for a year, they should now heave a sigh of relief after releasing both the films.😆However I don't think Heroine would release within a week after Barfi if it wasn't Kareena's birthday.Didn't Madhur tell they are releasing the film as a birthday gift for Kareena?

Ok I have to tread carefully here. I dont want to stereotype and I apologize in advance if I'm saying anything offensive.
Multiplexes audiences are normally...how shall I put it...GENERALLY more educated? They're the audience that give different movies a real chance. They generally dont care about starpower as much as they care about a good script. They're also the audience that is more Western influenced, and hence movies like Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste, Ek Main Aurr Ek Tu, I Hate Luv Storys, and the likes do better business there.
Saif Ali Khan, for instance, was called the first multiplex hero. The kinda characters and cinema he did were very "angreez" and accepted by this sector.

Single Screens are the masses in India. They're the audiences who prefer the SUPERSTARS in the typical masala films, maar dhaar, dishoom dishoom, item numbers, and VERY DESI CONTENT.
Salman Khan for instance, caters primarily to the masses coz he understands their taste very well.
Films like Singham, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Golmaals, Agneepath and other such testosterone infused film with one very God like hero beating up 20 other men are what Single Screen audiences lap up.

I think it is a bad decision because both of the movies seem to have the same target audience. The multiplex crowd. Single-screens won't contribute too much to female-oriented movie, imo

@DG TBH I don't think all of Heroine has been projected to the masses

Saiyaan isn't a very massy number.. esp. with all that contemporary-ish dancing and what not

They wouldn't wanna just try and just go for a certain type of public, ESPECIALLY considering that Herione isn't like every other masala movie that has a great ending and lots of awesome romance and Kareena's chunri flying around etc etc

Yeah true...then what are they focusing on? They have alienated the multiplex audience completely coz they're not even releasing any dark promos that make people go "Oh shit"

And I swear if I see Kareena waving to the crowd and blowing kisses ONE MORE TIME in a promo, I will strangle someone on the UTV team.
Khwahishein pissed me off big time, coz they literally compiled the same visuals we've BEEN seeing in a new promo!

This is Kareena's MOST IMPORTANT project. She's been going around promoting like a mad woman single handedly. The LEAST UTV can do is edit the promos well.
