It is freezing cold outside and as I shut the door behind me, stepping into the inn, I see a gathering of my Comrades and friends seated by the fireplace. I walk towards you and find that you have already bought warm drinks for all. Ah, is that warm cup of coffee for me? Thank you, young lass.

Now that I've seated myself and my coat and hat have been hung on the peg by the door, I study your eager faces and see some new listeners among you.

Greetings to moonlight, shakethebiscuit, tes_v1, ASRandKKGSRFan, and kvarsha: It's a delight to have you coming here to this treasured place of ours. On behalf of all my Comrades and readers, I welcome you to the inn where the legendary story of Arhasia is told...

If I were not freezing from the cold outside, I would have stepped forward to hug each of you but for now I shall convey my love through my words. I am grateful and indebted to all my dear friends who, with their comments, support and encourage me to brave the Dark Lady as she narrates to me, every night, the story we have all fallen in love with: casker, angeldream, nature, Preetianjita, Shalve, Vidya, Shikha, dingle kushipugly, kushiarnav, Shas, Shagun, Kalpana, masaf, hatelove, mira, hoopoe, music, bumblebee, saomom, VasantiLad, Idealist, garlic, areeba (surprised and honoured to see you!)...

And now, as we drink what we have in our warm cups, I shall tell you of a day in Arhasia where a fearful thing chanced upon our dear village girl, Kushi. May your heart be steadfast as you listen to what happened to her...

Chapter Fifty Seven: The Errand and its Errant Effects

Earlier than always, when there was still an hour more for the workers to arrive at the Industry, Kushi walked into the dreaded place, her steps on the stairs echoing against the empty walls.

She went straight for Lord Akash's room and, though knowing no one was there, took the respectful moment to knock and then opened it and peered in. It was dark inside and the curtain was barring the window, so she walked across the room, to the other end, and drew them apart. Light flooded into the room and she saw that the room had been turned into an office again with a huge desk in the center and armchairs behind and before it.

She looked to the side where the changing room had been curtained and saw that no such section existed now and there was no sign of the curtains either. But in its place was an armchair and on it was, neatly folded, the gown she had worn to the Industry last day. Moving towards the armchair, she opened her tiny box, took the silk robe out, kept it on the armchair and placed her folded gown in the tiny box before shutting it.

Then with a happy smile, she walked out of the room and after she had closed it, she walked towards the stairs but the thought of Lord Arnav came into her mind and knowing fully well he was not here, she cast a disgusted look in the direction of the door. Her expression froze on her face.

For standing there, leaning against the doorframe of his closed door, with his arms crossed before his royal chest, one booted leg crossed casually behind the other, stood Lord Arnav, his glinting eyes accepting her abated look with a smirk.

Kushi straightened up and gulped, what was he doing here 'this' early? She could feel her heartbeat rising with dreaded anticipation of what was to come. And with a sinking heart she remembered the entire industry was empty but for them.

He loosened his arms and walked towards her, each gait measured to quicken the rising note of her heartbeat. She stepped away from him. Her eyes captured under his slaving gaze.

"So, you came early today," said Lord Arnav, taking another step towards her and she moved a step away, "Did you think you could beat me here?"

"I..." Kushi began and then she stopped stepping backwards. She realized that there was no need for her to play victim to him especially after last day's events. He stopped before her too, wondering why she was not stepping back in fear anymore.

"You are a cruel man," said Kushi, glaring up at him.

"Tell me something I don't know," he said in a low voice, looking down into her eyes and smirking.

Kushi was fluttered by their proximity and though she had always looked upon him with downright hatred, there were times when she felt greatly captivated by the power and strength she saw in him and sometimes by the intensity with which he often looked at her. Right this moment, she was in such a state and she closed her eyes to not fall prey to his evilly penetrating eyes.

Lord Arnav had been putting up a strong front as he stood towering before her but when she closed her eyes, his walls slackened and he stared down at her, fascinated. Instantly, he gritted his teeth in anger that he was letting himself get affected by her presence.

"Kushi!" he barked and she opened her eyes suddenly, widened with fear.

"You have been most disruptive to my work here," he said, "Because of your recklessness, I have lost most of my stock in the grainage. I want you to set out this very minute into the forest and find as many silkworms and silkmoths as you can find to fill that pail."

Kushi blanched, "Into the forest? Me? To pick..." She gulped and then she looked at the bucket positioned near the grainage door. It was neither small nor big but since silkworms and silk moths were tiny things, a lot of them were needed if she was literally expected to 'fill that pail'.

"Get going! Kushi Kumari Gupta..." grunted Lord Arnav, "Unlike yesterday, if you begin right now, you will be able to return before evening and then go home."

"And what if I can't fill it before evening time," asked Kushi, staring at the pail and shivering at the thought of collecting creepy crawly and dull winged things from the dreadful forest.

"You will not return until it is filled to the brim," he said sternly, "Now go!"

If her heart could sink any further, it would have sunk so as she moved away from his heated height and ambled towards the pail. Bending, she picked it up and after placing her tiny box in a corner which she would take home when she returned, she set out for the unthinkable adventure in the forest, without offering a last glance to the First Lord who stared at her receding form with a satisfied smile.

The sun shone bright upon the top of the trees but within the forest, close to the ground, everything was shaded and cool. The trees were often so closely crowded that it was impossible for the sunlight to find enough space to pierce through and make the forest look less dark in the daytime. Humming and skipping with her humming, Kushi tried to keep her rising fears at bay and swinging the empty pail in her hand, she made her way through the forest East of the Industry.

She searched for any sign of cocoons or silkworms or even silk moths but the search was turning out to be tiringly fruitless. She moved deeper and deeper into the forest. If a few moments ago, she had turned around and looked down the path from where she had come, she would have seen the sunlight on the grass that fell through the space between the trees at the fringe. But now, she knew that since she was moving deeper into the forest, her turning back would only find darkness, for she was too far away from the grasslands and fields and now could see only dark trunks of trees wherever she looked. Clutching the skirt of gown more for assuring her trembling senses than to avoid tripping, she made her way further, searching for what she had set out for.

Soon she began to pick on her usual mumbling and this helped to evade the thought that she was alone in the strange place, "This is a boy's job. Picking worms and moths! Lordy lord and his sudden...ideas to provoke me." She stopped and frowned, "Aye, to provoke me, that has always been his intent. He wants me angry and hurt and he knows I will take up any challenge as long I can expect to see him defeated." And then she continued walking, "But he never gets defeated, that dark...dirty..." She glimpsed something white on the leaf of the nearby tree and made for it.

Eyeing it, her face lit up when she realized that it was a cocoon of a silkworm. Instead of the cocoon, she plucked the leaf as a whole and gently placed it at the bottom of the pail, "You stay there, little worm. The big lordly worm will get you but till then I grant you the choice of a good sleep."

And so she moved into the forest, humming, mumbling, searching and plucking if she found anything.

Lord Arnav had an extremely eventful day at the Industry. He had a few merchants from Persia visiting him and he spent his entire day conversing and discussing with them the prospect of making a satisfactory deal with them. After they had left, a new shipment of silk robes was ordered and he had to monitor its management and execution along with Master Aman. Lord Akash had not come that day for he had been sent to meet with the Chinese intermediary who was staying at the inn of the North Village.

When it was nearly closing time, and all the laborers were dismissed, Master Aman was locking the grainage door after Lord Arnav had left for the stable when he noticed the tiny box in the corner. He frowned and bent down to inspect it. Opening it, he found a familiar gown in it and then looked up, "Had she come today? I don't remember seeing her..."

And then he realized that Lord Arnav had been at the Industry earlier than he usually came, so he might know if she had come or not. He walked downstairs with the box and after locking up the Industry, he made for the stable. It was very windy that night and Master Aman had to pull his coat firmly around him to keep it from waving and flapping about. It also kept him from the biting cold that seemed to drift with the wind. He had thought that the First Lord must have already left but on reaching the stable, he saw Lord Arnav paused before his horse.

"Master?"

Lord Arnav looked up, his eyes unusually glazed, "Aman, did you...anytime at all, today, see that village girl?"

"No," said Master Aman and lifted the box, "But I found this near the grainage door."

Lord Arnav stared at the box and felt his contentions crumbling. It was barely a whisper when he voiced the words, "She's not back then."

"Pardon, sire? Did you say anything?"

The determination returned in Lord Arnav's eyes and he shook his head, "Nothing, Aman. Just send that box to the Castle."

"Sire, aren't you going that way?" Master Aman wondered.

"No, there is someplace I have to go first," said Lord Arnav, hastily getting on his Shadow.

"Is there something you want me to tell you sister when I pass by the Castle?"

"Just tell her I'll be home a bit late."

Master Aman bowed and then watched as the First Lord led his dark horse through the open stable and then sped away into the windy darkness.

"Wonder where he is going in such a hurry..." shrugged Master Aman before turning to his own horse to take him home.

That erratic girl! Lord Arnav frowned as he bent forward upon Shadow's back as the horse leapt into the forest and sped through the darkness, darting and careening through trees and over protruding roots. I sent her off in the early hours of the morning so that she would make it before it darkened!! And look what she's done with herself now...When I get my hands on her...he gritted his teeth as his fierce eyes searched in the darkness for any sign of her.

Owls hooted and bats flitted overhead and Kushi stopped. She leaned against a tree, panting, the tears dried on her face. She was tired and it was so dark she could not see her next step. She could go no further. She looked down at her pail and though she couldn't see it clearly in the darkness, she knew it was only half-filled. The wretched forest had turned up with very less progeny of silkworms.

Something slithered over her feet and, yelping, she stepped away. Was that a hiss she had heard? Panicked, she turned around and ran. And then she heard a growl somewhere in the distance before her. She stopped, her face paling at the thought of what it was. Padded feet made its way towards her and she knew by the sound that it was something huge. A bear? A wolf? A lion?

She thought no more, but dropping the pail and clutching at her skirt with both hands, she raced in a different direction, not knowing that she was going deeper and deeper into the forest. All she wanted was to run away from the sounds...

Was it her imagination or was that the sound of paws chasing after her? She didn't stop to answer herself; she ran as fast as her fear-struck legs could take her. She ran and, as she ran, her vision blurred. Tears were streaming down her face but she didn't know they were. All she knew was she wanted to wake up. Wake up from this nightmare...

Another growl sounded from somewhere near her and she panicked, "No," she breathed out as she rushed headlong into the darkness. Wind raged all around in the deep and she had to fight against the mad breeze as well.

Then suddenly her tired feet tripped on something and she fell to the ground on her face. Her trembling hands tried to raise herself from the ground but her legs were numb from the hysterical running and she couldn't feel them to set them firmly on the ground. She sat there in the darkness, her tears her only company, and mumbled all the prayers that she had been taught by her mother.

Then after a few seconds, she gathered the strength to get up. When on her feet, she scanned the area around her. It was pitch black and there was nothing she could pick out distinctly. She didn't know where she was and she didn't know where to run to. Was it the right way? Was she nearer to habitation or far from it?

She stepped back, and a twig cracked. Gasping, she turned around. Did that twig crack under her feet or under the feet of something else? Was there something else here in the darkness with her? Her eyes saw nothing but darkness all around.

"Please Goddess Mother," she pleaded breathlessly, and then began walking forward, trying to make no sound and also keeping her ears alert for any slight sign of foreign presence.

And then she stopped again.

She heard it, above the sound of the wild wind, the sound of panting. Not of one, but of many.

Reluctantly, she turned to look towards her left. Millions of red eyes stared at her from the dark space in the distance. Screaming, she ran and the many eyes chased her.

"No, no," she panted hopelessly as her tired legs found the strength to take her away from the eyes that were closing in on her. She could hear them, the many paws of the many eyes...she dared not look behind her for what she heard was so frightful that she would die of a heart stroke if she turned to see what was behind her.

And then she heard it. She didn't know if she felt even more scared or slightly relieved on hearing it, but she heard it alright. Horse hoofs. Racing through the trees in the direction of where she was being chased.

She didn't know if she was dreaming horse hoofs too...maybe the feral wind was running away with her mind too...

Panting, she realized that she could hear those horse hoofs no more. But the many paws behind her were still there. So the horse had been a dream then, she realized with a sinking heart but she did all she could to not stop running and created as much of distance as she could between her and what was chasing her...

Suddenly she tripped and her fears rocketed as she fell upon the ground again, before a tree. It was as if the wild wind had stopped. Everything stilled and she could hear every sound distinctly, her hard heavy breathing the most prominent of them.

The hunting paws had stopped before her and she saw the many red eyes watching her fallen form. She tried to stand up, holding onto the hard wood of the tree behind her. She leaned against the tree and stared fearfully at the animals. Was this the end? Was this how Kushi Kumari Gupta was destined to finally return to her real parents? She swallowed, trying to calm her fears but her throat was dry.

And then she paused in her wonderings. Why were the animals not attacking? Why were they standing there, afraid to move...?

She heard it and knew that this time she was not imagining. It sounded real close by: the exhaled grunt of a standing horse, and she thought she had felt the strand of hair behind her ear stir when the horse had exhaled.

And then a most surprising thing happened. The tree behind her pressed itself against her back, and one of its branches slid around her waist and held her secure in its hold. Kushi froze just like how the animals before her were frozen. She felt the warm breath of the tree on her neck, and then the familiar scent of a man she detested reached her nostrils. Surprisingly, she was not disgusted by the fact that it was him behind her, holding her. She felt safe. She knew that she would not be harmed by the animals as long as he was there. As long as a more terrible animal than 'them' had hunted his favorite prey down first, she thought sarcastically, more out of relief.

She realized then that the red eyes were shrinking. Were they retreating? Yes, they were...for now the eyes were no longer there. It was just darkness before them...Them? Her anger instincts rose and she broke free of his grip and turned around to face him, creating ample distance between them.

If it was anyone else, she would have seen only darkness where he stood and doubted if there really was someone there. But he emanated so much heat when he was near her, that she knew he was there even from this distance.

"Don't you dare touch me or even near me!" she said, pointing a finger into the darkness before her, relieved to find that her voice was not trembling with fear anymore but was determined enough to show him her intention.

He spoke nothing and she doubted if she was imagining it wrong. Was it not him?

And then he stepped forward and Kushi didn't know from where but moonlight seeped through a space between the towering tall trees and she saw his face. The wind picked up again suddenly and his hair blew onto his fair forehead. Her lordly lord looked immensely heavenly in the moonlight...if in the daylight he looked fierce, ugly and heartless, in the moonlight, he was a beautiful, yearning, hungry man...

Hungry? Oh dear, where did that word come from? But it was true: When she stared into his eyes, she saw raw hunger in them. Hunger for what? To fight her back? To see her defeated? Or was it some other hunger...

"Where is the pail?" he stared at her, his eyes cold, and his mouth a hard thin line.

"What pail?" Kushi demanded over the wind and then remembered the pail. She glared at him through her dried tears, "You ask for a pail when I was almost killed right now?"

"If I hadn't come," he said coolly.

"Oh you proud masterly thing!" Kushi hissed, her loosened hair playing in the wind, "Why do you even bother to come and save me every time after pushing me into hell yourself?"

He smirked and her heart leapt, "Because I want you alive."

"Why?" she said, realizing that he was stepping closer towards her.

"To destroy you inch by inch," he whispered into the air, and she closed her eyes. He was so close to her now that she could feel the warmth of his body almost burn her skin even through the barriers of their clothes. But she dared not step back for then he would assume she was afraid of his approach.

"Tell me," he said into her ear, his breath upon her neck, sending shivers down her spine, "You didn't think I would let anyone but me kill you..."

"I would rather be mauled by forest animals than die an inglorious death by your filthy hand," she hissed back into his ear.

He titled his head and his eyes glinted as he read her expression, "Fiery kittens should not fight with powerful lions..."

Her lips trembled, "Let the lion learn, then, that the kitten is not powerless or scared."

He smirked, "Ah, so the lion is offered a tutorship by the kitten now? Teach me then...show me you are not affected by me."

She stared at him coldly and he had the smirk still pasted on his face.

Suddenly she froze; his cold hands were on her neck. What was he...?

He drew a finger softly down the curve of her neck and she inhaled, closing her eyes. His touch was magical. Though cold, they began to evoke fireworks inside her...

And then her eyes snapped open and with a flick of her quick hand, she had shoved his hand away from exploring the skin on her neck.

"Don't you dare touch me!" her eyes were on fire as she threw this warning at his cool face.

"I have told you once, Kushi Kumari Gupta," said Lord Arnav, pulling her to him by his hand on the back of her waist, "I hate to touch you, but you have no rights to tell me what I can or cannot do."

Kushi grunted, as she tried to push him away with both her arms that were wedged between them, shielding her chest from touching his burning body.

Her challenges always made him react this way, she should have remembered. But no, she always had to end up on the wrong side in an attempt to not be defeated.

The wind played wild around them as they struggled in the darkness, one trying to stay away and the other trying to keep close.

"Tell me, kitten, you are not affected by me?" he challenged in a low voice, pressing her harder into him, while his other hand reached for her face.

"I am not," she picked the words with effort, between her panting and desperate attempts to free herself from his grip, and then she gasped.

His fingers, now so warm, were cupping her chin. He lifted her face to look up into his eyes and her senses fled when she saw the moonlit depths of his overpowering gaze.

Lord Arnav had been trying all this time to camouflage his own weakening guard with his determined smirks and ready queries that was sure to maintain her flustered.

But every reaction of hers, whether she was disconcerted or defying, she ended up arousing strange feelings in him and making him want more of her. This had to stop but his attempts at stopping it were futile. For those very attempts made him more vulnerable to her presence.

Earlier, when he had stood behind her and she had leaned into his chest, he had been fighting a war within himself to try and not bend down and kiss her neck which was pearl-like under the moon and to his eyes, appeared silky smooth. He had wondered what it would feel like touching it and in the attempts to dissuade her, he had even used the opportunity to let his finger run down the curve, the feel of the soft maiden skin exciting his nerves like never before. Now, after his eyes and his fingers, he wanted his tongue to know what her neck would taste like...

"No," she breathed out, as she closed her eyes and looked away, trying to release his hold on her chin.

"No?" he asked softly, mischievously, "Doesn't the beggar want to know what the Lord can do to her? Has the kitten had enough of teaching the lion?"

Breathing heavily through her mouth, she kept her gaze away from him and struggled against his pinning arm. Her arms between their bodies were numb from remaining locked against his crushing chest for so long.

"Let me go!" She demanded, her eyes beginning to water again. What was he going to do to her?

"I will," he said, "when I want to."

"No," she breathed out again, "Let me go!"

She tried moving her arms but it was futile. She struggled against him and the more she fought him away, the more stronger his hold on her became.

Finally, fatigue and fear from the entire day's events distorted her hazy senses and she felt herself slipping from her consciousness. Lord Arnav watched her eyes flutter close, as her last conscious, "no" escaped from her tired lips and her head lolled forward, coming to rest itself against his warm chest.

"Kushi?" his tone was soft and anxious.

He slackened his hard grip on her and, gently, with both his hands holding the back of her waist, he let her head fall backwards and he had the full glimpse of her lovely face underneath his. Her lips were parted and she was breathing through them. Her cheeks were still only regaining its red after having turned terribly pale in her frantic running on being fearfully chased through the forest.

He gazed at her for how long, he was not sure. Unmoving while the wind wild roared around them, he held her against him, fascinated by how the moonlight kissed her skin and made her sparkle under the dark shadows of the trees.

And then he felt it. Stirring within him...No, he panicked, not now, not here...

He hastily leaned her against a tree and stepped away, no, I can't, I shouldn't...

He felt his tongue begin to burn and he clenched his jaw instinctively. He looked behind him and saw his horse, Shadow, watching him.

He had to escape, away from her.

He looked at her; but he couldn't leave her here either...

He shook his head. Go away! Go away!

He closed his eyes and breathed heavily through his flared nostrils. Not here, not now...

He opened his eyes. His hungry gaze fell on her unconscious form standing against the tree, supported by branches. He stepped forward, closer and closer, the wind around him raging and storming as he neared her. His horse shuffled uneasily where it stood.

She was beautiful, her skin was fresh and untouched...He was before her, leaning towards her.

The moonlight cast its light downwards but his towering shadow did not let the light touch her...his strong shoulders and sturdy arms even kept the wind away from hampering with her hair or clothes. The shadow of his face moved over her young angelic face, his eyes devouring the vision before it.

"Kushi," he breathed out desperately, and one hand of his smashed into the tree, wood-dust exploding at the impact. No, I shouldn't...

He leaned into her neck, his breath warm on her skin.

"Kushi," he tried to keep himself away from her neck but the more he tried, the more his burning tongue hungered to taste her neck...

On either side of her face, his hands were pressed on the tree, to support the uncontrolled weight of his approach, and his head dipped into her neck.

His lips neared her soft skin and he paused, struggling to not continue.

His defenses slipped, and he kissed her neck.

Fire exploded in him. He went for another dip. This time he let his tongue taste her. The fire on his tongue raged and he sucked her skin again. She moaned unconsciously for the tongue was a blistering reminder of the unwanted nights.

He sucked at her skin again and again, growing wild and fierce which each kiss and each lick, until his hunger silenced and he fell exhausted upon her unconscious form. He dug his face into her hair and breathed in, her scent calming the wildness inside him.

He was relieved, he hadn't caused her harm...but why had his animal instincts silenced with mere kisses and licks on a village girl's neck? Was it not hungry?

His tongue felt a lot soothed now and it did not torment him. Had it had its fill for the night already?

But he was not sure, maybe it will return again...and before it returns, had to get her away from here, for he was not certain he will be able to stop himself from hurting her if it came again.

He bent down and lifted her up and carried her to Shadow. The horse bent its forelegs and he sat her on its back. Then he climbed up behind her and pressed her closer against his chest.

Her head lolled onto his shoulder and he cradled her head between his shoulder and his neck to not let it bounce about when riding. He slid his hands around her waist, clasped at the reins and then, spurring, send his dark horse cantering through the dreadful forest that would linger in the aftermath of an insatiable struggle.

P. S. Yup! By far, this has been my longest chapter ever written for this FF. And hence, the struggle I went through to write it, you cannot imagine. I would really really appreciate it if your comments would justify the effect this chapter has had on you...

Effect? u mean the mesmorizing details of arnav khushi in the forest such that i forgot the wrold around me. well that explains why my mom was yelling at me after i finihed ending the chapter.

animal instincts?? so hes a vampire wanting to dring her blood or a creature wanting to literally eat her. hmm but if so why hasnt he harmed any one in the castle? Shaym turned into a bat and flew away so maybe arnav a werewolf to depict vampire werewolfs as eternal enemies or do both share the same curse?

Y was it that in the PM u sent u wrote last update? i thought maybe u were ending this FF.
