Sanjay Leela Bhansali shops for Deepika
Caroline D'Cruz, TNN | Sep 5, 2012, 12.00AM ISTActress Deepika Padukone will sport a traditional Indian look in the region-centric film, Ram Leela and the costumes were sourced from remote areas like Bhoj, Mundra and Mandvi in the Gujarat's Kutch district.
It isn't often that we get to see actress Deepika Padukone sport an all-Indian look on-screen. After the success of Om Shanti Om, her biggest commercial success so far, the actress has gone on to do films like Housefull, Love Aaj Kal,Karthik Calling Karthik, Desi Boyz, Dum Maro Dum and Cocktail, in all of which she sported western or fusion wear. According to sources, Deepika's costumes in the upcoming Ram Leelawill be designed by Delhi-based designer Anju Modi. Sources also revealed that director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose mother-tongue is Gujarati, was so keen on getting the films look right that he went shopping with Modi himself, to ensure that everything was in accordance with the look of the film.
Modi said she was at ease working with Sanjay even tough he is known to be a hard task master. "Sanjay and I share a nice synergy, when you work with a creative mind; you come up with creative ideas. I am a hard task master myself. When I visualize something, I'd like to achieve it hundred percent flat, not even ninty nine percent. Some people say accha ho gaya, khatam karo, but Sanjay is very focused and he will not cut costs at any point. As it is his sets are very elaborate," she said.
Careful about how much she revealed about the look of the film, Modi revealed that there was no cost-cutting anywhere and that Deepika's look mattered more than the price of every cloth she chose. "Whether a garment costs ten lakhs or five lakh or even fifty thousand, it has to be worth it. Just no-holds barred splurging doesn't mean you place random elements here and there. The expenditure has to be intelligent and it has to be mixed with aesthetics. Sanjay never said cut it down when it came to the costumes, he was sure about what the script demands. Every time we saw for example a kurta, he would say 'nahin, chhune mein accha nahi lag raha'. It just goes to show the attention to detail. It's not like anyone is going to catch it on-screen but he believes in the right kind of filming, doing the close-up for even the sets.
