Part IV
Garima Gupta prayed to Devi Maiya like she did always for the wellbeing of her two daughters and her family. It was her unswerving faith in the Mother Goddess that had given her peace and guided her in difficult times.
Today she was once again faced with shadows from her past; truth she had long ago buried to ease the pain and carry on with life was staring at her face today, ready to destroy the family she had nurtured for so long. She felt she needed the calming presence of Shashiji, the answer to all her prayers in the past, in times of need, but today he was incapacitated and this was one battle she had to fight all alone .Her children's happiness was at stake, and this time things were right and how they should be and nothing should come in the way of that, she was determined. She was no longer a sixteen year old girl, who needed to look after her dying mother, who saw a meaningless marriage of convenience as an escape route to cloak herself with respectability .She knew what she was up against this time.
She had faced the same demons once before for her family and faced slander and humiliation, but this time she had to be stronger for her daughter .A child who had been dealt a cruel blow of fate when her parents died, she had tried to get justice for her but circumstances had dealt her a cruel blow that day. She could still remember the horror, when she heard the name of the family whose car had caused the death of her sister and brother in law, she carried their name! The policeman had sneered at her, another girl trying to make some quick money, claiming to be a Malik girl, when he had heard her name. She remembered his disdainful words -look at that woman, madam, she had claimed, that she was carrying a Malik child, and it was all a conspiracy and now you are saying, you are his wife .Then madam you are a widow now as the man and his wife both died yesterday. Do you want to come to court everyday and be part of this. Those who had to die are dead it is the ones living who need looking after madam. These are the few things we have recovered from the bodies, they are yours to keep.
She had made a decision that day, not to confront her past and make peace with the ways of Devi Maiyya .But today she needed to face the ghosts of her past for her daughter and give some closure to that episode that changed her life.
