Hello shello people. Sorry my title is bland, couldn't think of anything. I need Dex's creative mind for a good title 😆 So today, Rajeev Masand and Sneha Rajani (Sony TV's head) had an interestin, but age-old debate on films and the money they make. I noticed it started in the ETT review thread but thought a new topic might be better, especially if people were looking for actual reviews in that thread.
Anyways, there were some interesting points on both sides from Masand and Rajani. She said that if she were to make a film, she hopes it's as "crap" as insert any other "crap" hugely successful film here). Her logic is the audience laps it up and makes it successful so why not give the audience what they want? Masand says that just because it makes money does not mean we should aim for mediocrity. It got me thinking...should we continue to make mediocre films just because they make money? At the end of the day, filmmaking today is a business and isn't the most fundamental rule of any business...give people what they want? Supply what the demand is. On the other hand, how is Bollywood, as a CREATIVE industry, to improve if we don't strive for greatness? Here is their debate:
Sneha Rajani ?@SnehaRajani

And the usual suspects are busy trashing ETT.. Whilst the audience laps it up..God, if I ever make a movie..I hope its as "crap" as ETT is!

Nikhil Advani ?@nickadvani
@SnehaRajani Amen!!!
Rajeev Masand ?@RajeevMasand
@nickadvani Aap toh aise mat boliye. Why would you aspire to achieve mediocrity? Surely there's a way to make good cinema that's successful?
Nikhil Advani ?@nickadvani
@RajeevMasand have not seen film sirji. In the US. Will catch it. Just know how @kabirkhankk thinks and makes films.
Sneha Rajani ?@SnehaRajani
@nickadvani @RajeevMasand @kabirkhankk How about the fact that so called 'mediocrity' connects with our people?? Why shy away from that??
Rajeev Masand ?@RajeevMasand
@SnehaRajani Indeed it does. So we shd embrace it? And wasnt attacking ETT but @nickadvani piping in tht if "crap" works, I wanna make crap.
Rajeev Masand ?@RajeevMasand

@SnehaRajani I didnt even think ETT was crap. A lot of it works. And there's sincerity to it. But i dont think it's gd bec it's making money

Sneha Rajani ?@SnehaRajani
@RajeevMasand Yes, we should embrace it coz that's what our public demands! No not crap but entertainment. 10 years hence it maybe different
Rajeev Masand ?@RajeevMasand
@SnehaRajani That's like saying we shd make cigarettes even though they kill ppl, bec there's a demand for them.
Sneha Rajani ?@SnehaRajani
@RajeevMasand But the world does na??? At a production rate that will kill us just reading it!
Rajeev Masand ?@RajeevMasand
@SnehaRajani But I guess this is just one of those never ending debates :-)
This is NOT an ETT bashing topic. So please don't think of it that way. I genuinely found their conversation interesting and wanted to discuss. I'd really love to hear everyone's opinions..hopefully without bashing each other.

It almost seems tht good movies and blockbusters r oxymorons the way good films are becoming oblivious and mediocre films are becoming BBs. Seems good filmakers don't know how to make BBs and vice versa.

The only guys who hv got the formula right regarding good films + BB r Raju Hirani nd Vinod Chopra.😉

good topic... I totally agree abt the cigarette cmmnt, I mean just cz majority wants to jump in a well n suicide, doesnt mean u have to follow dem in stupidity n do da same thing.

The prob is dat long gone is da tym wen films were made to leave an impact on society... b it emotional, patriotic etc. now its all abt making money... ppl have forgotten dat films r part of ART... n art is a platform used by artists to showcase their talent while choosing topics dat r relevant to society & benefit the society.

I m not sayin dat all movies shuld have a social mssg... bt sumwhere it shuld b relatable to the prsn watching it. In India filmaking is more of creating a dreamland for the poor man who cant afford to visit the Switzerland, USA... who cant wear designer clothes... its a way to make dem live dat life... bt all that at the cost of lowering their IQ level.

Hence Bollywood is never at par wid Hollywood wen it comes to making meaningful & GOOD films

Good question choco...its the million dollar question. Percisely the reason its been ages since i watched a bollywood flick. I cant abide by meaningless crap. I dont expect the movie to tackle a social issue and then miraculously solve it for me, but i do want Something thats well thought out. I feel insulted when i watch meaningless flicks because it makes me feel like the whole team involved in making the movie doesnt think i have the mental capacity to process something thats not comedy or in ur face. But, ofcourse, im not the only one theyre catering to. i, like many other, are probably a minority on this side of the issue.

But then i always feel that the masses watch movies for pure escapism, and i dont blame them. If someone finds their jollies in slap stick comedies and unrealistic action flicks then, hey, who am i to object? Ill just stay on the other side until something worthwhile comes along.

Its sad that movies have gone back to the 70s and 90s style of film making...I understand the 70s movie had a lot of masala but the movies atleast had a good storyline..but todays films lack any story..its just meaningless and the jokes and humour are also forced..there was a time when masala films were being rejected by the audience I guess few years back, but suddenly they are again back in demand..the sad part is many of my friends actually enjoy these movies like ready so there is nothing much that can be done about it...untltil the audience gets bored to death with the same crap and reject these films! Hoping that day comes soon!!!

Choco, the movie-makers are lazy, us viewers also are complacent with brainless entertainment.
Everyone wants easy money. Man is lethargic by nature, and the movie-makers want an easy way where they can save and make money , as fast as they can.
To make any sensible movie, one needs to THINK. one needs to do research.. film-makers have no patience for that. Small example - the dialogues in most of the movies are so artificial, are so not like how you and me speak GENUINELY. It takes some effort/research/skill to write a good genuine script too :)
And there are countless aspects like that. That is we have all 'masala' stuff, because those movies have no reality excluding the story-line.
The audience watch movies for MANY reasons -
#1 -- just to hang out with friend
#2 -- to actually get entertained
#3 -- there's a psychological reason which is actually a major reason why people watch movies, and that is, to imagine yourself in the actor's place, and just disappear(escape) into that unrealistic magical masala world where every nonsensical issue has a magical solution, every love story just starts with wind blowing and ends up in 'happily lived ever after', blah blah blah .
However, i shall maintain that it's BOTH, the film-makers and the audience's fault why the brainless masala entertainment is still running. Their complacency is a hindrance.
Both the audience and the filmmakers are inter-dependent.
BUT, because the mass takes whatever is thrown at them, I feel, as the film-makers are at a higher level and is an industry, it should produce sane, educative, ethical and stuff that teaches a common man, make him feel like he'd learn something after walking out of the theatre, apart from giving him entertainment.
Nice topic btw :)

Mediocre according to whose standards?

If the film is bad, it will flop. Simple. If it is good, it will do well.
The critics are most of the times bunch of idiots who judge a movie by idealistic standards, and then complain how bad or good a movie is. This is why I only ask my friends when I want to watch a movie. They can give me an unbiased opinion.
I have not seen Ek Tha Tiger yet, but it's hard to trust reviews which obviously seem to be written by those who hate the lead. Everything seems to be exaggerated.

I think the first thing in Bollywood that producers/directors know is that sex sells. How else would you explain movies that have terrible plots or no plots at all like Jism 2 to be able to do any business? It also explains the rise of item songs all of a sudden.

And secondly, star power sells. I've never watched a Salman movie in the theatre but I know plenty of people that do. A lot of people in India go to watch movies with their families. And I feel that's why Salman's movies work. They cater to an audience that wants to watch an appropriate movie. Salman doesn't do kissing scenes or anything vulgar (minus his dancing ofc). His movies are pure mindless comedies. But they're appropriate. No extra skin show, no forced item songs, nothing. It's safe to watch a Salman movie in the theatre with your family.

Then there are people who just go to watch a movie to get lost in it and live in that fantasy world like Angel-likeDevil mentioned. Happily ever after doesn't exist but for 3 hours if you can forget about your student loans, your mortgage, or anything else that troubles you, why wouldn't you?

I think right now it's pretty bad because there are very few movies released that steer away from the regular masala movies. Movies like Guzaarish do not work in India and for that reason, few popular stars will ever do them.

But that doesn't mean that mindless cinema should be given more encouragement. Yeah, business runs by simple supply and demand but that doesn't mean that you should supply anything and everything the public wants.

Moves like 3 idiots or Munna Bhai are perfect examples of how movies can have commercial success while teaching the audience, or at least informing the audience of a social message. They did amazingly well in terms of business but not at one point did I feel they insulted my intelligence as an audience member. 3 idiots dealt with a social issue like suicide due to educational pressures and that's something that every student in India can probably relate to. But the social issue didn't engulf the movie or weigh it down and that's key to making a movie with a social message work. Audiences can STILL be entertained without putting useless item songs.

Movie making is an art and people in Bollywood seemed to be interested in taking shortcuts right now instead of mastering it. At least a few have not fallen victims to this yet. So there's still a little hope left for Bollywood.
