Let me go into the customs

For a marriage to be recognized as legal under Hindu law there need to be

1) Witnesses
2) A legal document - a registration of the marriage

OR

1) Witnesses in the form of a priest who performs the marriage , people who attend
2) The pheras in the presence of fire ( here fire is a witness) -- the word used is agnisakshi - agni meaning fire and sakshi meaning witness and some symbol of marriage - sindoor/kangan/toe rings /mangalsutra

In the absence of either of these and in the absence of agni as a witness ( fire)... the marriage is not valid. I am sorry but BW films are not right in the depiction of marriage...

More details at the following link in case you are interested... warning -- heavy Sanskrit/Hindi content ! Went over my head too ( although I went through this!)

Hope this clarifies...

Intent of this post is only to answer your question and not to hurt any sentiments.

You are right and so is Darcy Fan on the legal side of things.
The Hindu Customs are as important as is the legal registration and indeed it is now a requirement in most countries that the marriage has to be registered. Darcyfan is also right that if Arnav has got the marriage registered then he just has to show (marriage certificate and nobody would argue - but he has not done that or I guess CVs don't want to be too smart about such things), Anjali, Nani and Dadi would know that registered marriage is legal marriage.
It is a choice typically, if the couple wishes to live with each other after the registered marriage they can. Like in the UK, a lot of couples have their registered marriage and the bride goes back to her parents until the Indian ceremony is completed whether it is Hindu ritual or the Nikaah.
When I got married, I had the full ritual marriage with the priest being there, the pheras and the witnesses. After the marriage we had to sign a register with the temple, which then gets the marriage registered on our behalf. So, in some countries the tradition is given priority and following that the legal aspect is completed, but the hindu marriage is valid in the court of law. This is true of my country which is not the UK, US or India.

Thanks Rayka -- my marriage was the same -- we had the ceremony and the registration a day later...which was at the registrar's office!

They are definitely a married couple,
They are legally married too as this term is used several times in the show by arnav. Anav has made it crystal clear that she is his legally married wife. the mangalsutra, sindoor witnessed by Devi maiya in the temple.
He would have jst thrown the legal document on their face, if he wanted to keep Khushi with him he could done that too as no one can stop him but agreed for marriage with rituals only for Khushi happiness.
The RM clan are aware deep within that they are a married couple but want all the rituals and also kind of supported dadi .for DADI her only aim was to accuse Khushi and throw her out of the house so she got the best of opportunity to spit venom on Khushi.
