i feel he should be sentenced for life and while serving his term in prison, he must be taught and IDK some psychiatrists should help him and make him a sane person.. (ofcourse only mentally unstable people can commit murders). In the end, the convicted must turn into a better person... this is what i believe in, now this, I call humanity...not death sentence. It's absolutely inhumane. If his mentality is still the same, well, nothing can be done, he can live his life till he dies naturally in a prison. Prison life is gruesome, brutal and worse than hell, as it is.

@attitude.ash:

Why first spend money on treating them to be mentally stable? Why not just jump straight to torture?

Murder and serial rapists, definitely yes!
In Murder cases, I think no one has the right to take away an innocents life no matter how bad things are. So if the accused has killed one or more victims, he has taken away life of an innocent. Moreover, if he's kept alive there are chances that he might escape and strike again. That will be horrifying. So I think he if a murder decides to show he's god by taking away an innocents life, we can show him he's not by taking away his.
In rapists cases, they have spoiled someones life! They should be taught a lesson by showing that there can be death sentences for the rapist too. And in case of serial rapists, if they are let go or escape there are changes again that they might go for someone. I remember this one case, where an accused rapist was left go. He had to serve for 20 years and was let go after 9 years. 9 YEARS! So the accused kidnapped a young girl-when she was on her way to school from home-and kept her victim in his house for 18 years and raped her continuously(don't remember the name.. I think the girls name is Darcey or something. The case is pretty popular). Thankfully, she was discovered and re united with her parents.. but after a long term of 18 years! 18 years the poor innocent was tortured because an accused was set free. So according to me, if any person, murder or rapist, poses threat to the society and the innocent lives, should be sentenced with death penalty. It is the right thing to do. And why only serial killers or rapists, terrorists should be hanged too!
But before sentencing death penalty one must be sure that the accused is the one who really committed the crime and is not being framed by someone, because then that would be killing an innocent.

Thats what a prison life is supposed to be unless the convict happens to be a well connected criminal say a son of a big shot or a political leader. He would then enjoy all comfort that life can offer although on papers he remains behind bars😉

the main problem i have with the death penalty is the doubt that the convicted could actually be innocent.

I believe in death penalty but only when the crime is murder. If somebody takes life of other people, they don't care for life and doesn't deserve to live. Spending tax's money on keeping them alive safe and secure, providing food and clothing and space and bed seems stupid to me. And that too with risk that they may escape someday or worse, giving only 10-20 years and leave them free for the rest of their life.

dont know about any other country
but here in the UK, it is banned
because some years ago they had killed an innocent man accusing him of some crime which led to his death
that is the reason why death penalty had been taken out..

Oooh good debate!

In my personal opinion, I think it isn't needed. We claim that we teach others not to commit the same mistake by using the death penalty and violence but how does that make any sense? You try to reduce violence by enacting violence which I don't find correct in any way. We say that others who commit murder are wrong but then by enforcing capital punishment, we are doing the same thing. Also, how can anyone learn from it, that's just a method of suppressing. There are other methods that can be used to teach these criminals what is right and what is wrong.

Furthermore, our justice systems are sometimes not accurate and fair and we end up taking the lives of innocent. There are many examples in history to prove that such as Derek Bentley.

Idealistic much? And would you apply this analogy to terrorists, child rapists and mass murderers?
As for violence in return for violence, the first violent act was committed unprovoked, while the second 'violence' was a justified reaction to the first one. So they would not be the same.
