When TRPs of soaps start to fall, the only plot that comes to rescue of the producers is introduction of a love triangle. This tried and tested formula works wonders with the Indian viewers who remain glued to their sets as the twists and turns unveil and spice up the show. SANGEETA YADAV tell you more
Today, Indian telly has every masala, in fiction, to keep viewers glued to the screen — be it saas-bahu sagas, middle-aged love, campus connect, sob stories, social issues and crime thrillers. But one issue that ensures high viewership are plots based on love triangles. So, a happy loving couple with an entry of a 'significant other' changes to 'happily never after'.
According to Ajay Bhalwankar, head Content, Hindi GECs, Zee TV, whenever the show experience low TRP rating 'woh' is brought in to complicate the pati-patni relationship. "The concept of love triangles not only develops a lot of curiosity for the viewers, it also leads to high TRPs," Bhalwankar says.
While some love triangles happen to be the main-stay of the show, others have been introduced to spice up the saga. In Balika Vadhu on Colors, love triangle has been the high-point. First, there is the Anandi-Jagya-Gauri saga. And then there is Anandi-Shiv-Ashima love angle. To add many twists, the two love triangles clash with each other from time to time as Jagya regrets his decision to leave Anandi and wants her back. Anandi being the ideal bahu appears to be caught between her duty and love (Shiv).
A similar drama is unfolding in Kya Huaa Tera Vaada Sony TV where Pradeep who left his wife for a live-in relationship with his colleague Anushka and now wants to go back to his wife because he is jealous of her success. However, Mauli has other plans for Pradeep and conniving to keep him at her side.
"Most TV soaps, deal with saas-bahu sagas which often makes people bored. But a love triangle is something that connects with the young and old alike. Some producers develop a new show around this storyline or some incorporate it as a sub-plot. Either way, the show gets the much needed boost," says Anil Wanvari, CEO, Indiantelevision.com
In Main Lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki on Life OK where the protagonist — Lakshmi's childhood dream to marry Arjun Agnihotri comes true. But to add spice to the love story, the writer created a situation where Lakshmi had to sell her husband (a la Judaai situation where Anil Kapoor is sold off to Urmila Mataondkar) to Somya to save their house and bring in the money so that they can maintain their high profile lifestyle. Since Arjun is happy with his 'second wife' envy raises its ugly head and Lakshmi now wants her husband back. No guesses that Somya is not obliging.
The adage that everything is fair in love and war aptly applies to yet another show on Life OK —Amrit Manthan where two sisters Amrit and Nimrit are fighting for Agam Malik. But it is Nimrit who is Agam's love of life and they get married much to Amrit's annoyance. She hires killers to have Nimrit murdered. The love angle takes a turn when Nimrit after a plastic surgery turns up.
But probably the most interesting love story that is on air is Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon on Star Plus. Though, the third person — Shyam is no longer in the picture it doesn't take away the hint of something bad from happening to this jodi which had won the Favourite Jodi of the year in Star Parivaar and Indian Telly Awards.
"After Shyam's exist from Arnab and Khushi's life, we will take their love story to new heights and make it more interesting and intense. But Shyam will definitely come back to mess with their lives," Gul Khan producer of the show reveals.
Zee TV's Rab Se Sohna Isshq takes the search for true love to another level. Sahiba marries Daljeet and insists on going for her honeymoon to London where her love — Ranbeer lives. Daljeet is just a pawn in her quest for true love. "Going to such extent and playing with the feeling of Daljeet has ensured that fate will rear its ugly head. Love triangles help the shows to keep viewrship loyalty. What would happen next keeps them interested. Though the love triangle is an ageold concept, what differentiates each show from the other is who it is presented and woven into the plot," says Wanvari.
Shows like Pavitra Rishta, Parichay, Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava and Kuch Toh Log Kahenge also cash in on the love triangle storyline.
JD Majethia, the producer of Byaah Hamaro Bahu Ka is planning to introduce a third person in Rajnibala and Gopikishan's lives. The person would play Rajnibala's love interest. "Nothing much is happening in the soap. It will be the entry of a new person that will create interest in the show once again. This new twist will justify the title of the show as well. With creative innovations, triangular relationships can charm the audience provided proper research is done on the audiences' preference. What they want, what interests them and how we can show the concept of love triangle in a different light is the key to good love triangle stories," Majethia tells you.
