Chapter Twenty Two: Night time talk
After the Vadhera's persuaded Padmini and Siddarth to stay at theirs, the family went upstairs to sleep.
However, Maanvi couldn't sleep. She felt restless, as if the world was trying to tell her something. She missed her parents and was scared for them, she wanted to call out her mother and hug her until the end was nigh. Maanvi got up from the bed and walked to the side table to drink water. Realising that there was in fact, no water left in the jug she decided to go down into the kitchen to get some.
Walking groggily, she crept downstairs and into the kitchen. Carefully caressing the jug full of water, she crept back upstairs and into her room. From the corner of her eyes, she saw a figure walking towards the balcony. Maybe it's a thief, Maanvi thought. Oh no, should I call Viraat? No no. He'll just tease me again, I'll go myself. After all what thief is safe from Maanvi Chaudary?
She quickly placed the jug on the side table and crept outside, she followed the silhouette of the person, making sure that they don't see her or hear her. Nearing the balcony, the figure stopped and walked towards the edge and looked up at the night sky. Maanvi looked closer and noticed that it was Padmini, she took a deep breath and thanked god that it was only her. She decided to go back into her room when she was curious as to why Padmini was staying up that late.
"Aunty?" She whispered, getting closer to Padmini.
The poor woman got startled but then relaxed when she saw that it was Maanvi. "Maanvi."
"Aunty what are you doing up so late?"
The woman smiled and touched Maanvi's cheek. "I couldn't sleep. And you, why are you up so late?"
"Actually Aunty I was getting water when I noticed you here. I too couldn't sleep."
"Looks like we have more in common that we first thought."
"Looks like it." A silence went through them, "Jeevika is exactly like you."
Padmini look her head, "No no."
Maanvi was confusing, "Huh?"
"I mean, Jeevika is more like her dad. Sweet, caring and an open book. She says the truth and doesn't hide anything."
"But that sounds to me like you."
"Maybe, but sometimes the truth is so bitter that you have to hide it. And that's what I do. Not Siddarth and Jeevika."
"Trust me." Maanvi said thinking about her parents and Beeji hiding it. Padmini looked at her strangely but Maanvi shrug it off saying, "So Aunty when are you and Uncle going back home?"
"Tomorrow. As early as possible."
"So that means I have to wake up earlier."
Padmini laughed lightly, "Of course who wouldn't want to say goodbye to Padmini Sharma?"
"Aunty!" Maanvi giggled. "And anyways, never say goodbye."
"Because life is small and the person who you're looking for might just be in front of you?"
"How did you know?"
"I have a friend that used to say things like that." She lingered for a bit before looking at Maanvi, "And you, how did you know?"
"I've heard it somewhere." Maanvi said thinking about how her mother used to say it to her when she was small. Maanvi yawned.
"Looks like you need sleep."
"I'm find Aunty."
"No. Maanvi come on. Go." Padmini became strict.
"It's okay Aunty."
"Maanvi. Don't you want to wake up early tomorrow?" Maanvi thought for a bit before nodding, "So go sleep." She nudged Maanvi slightly, Maanvi gave up and replied a 'good night' to Padmini and setting off to bed.
The conversation had been what Maanvi needed, a light hearted conversation with someone she felt close to, and she felt that with Jeevika's mother. She learned that Padmini and Siddarth had arrived to Chandigarh from Delhi couple of days back for a friend's wedding. And as soon as the Vadhera's had called them, they decided to visit them and Jeevika.
The morning arrived a little bit too quickly but Maanvi got up and quickly dressed. The family were all downstairs: she gave her 'see you laters' to Padmini before hugging both her and Siddarth. Maanvi smiled, she liked the way Padmini was. Completely like her. The way they drink, and especially the way they speak. The whole "Padmini Sharma" thing was Maanvi's "Maanvi Chaudary" persona. She liked it.
