Okay, so I haven't been travelling of late.Which means I am on a totally different tripthese days. I am couch potato. And, I havediscovered Channel Surfing! And that is whyI am here writing this time on Tellyland.{read more}And that is why I know that there are 12000hits on TV actor Kunal Karan Kapoor's FBpage which perhaps cannot compare withthe 1,00,000 plus hits on Barun Sobti's andyet herald the arrival of a small screen icon. And why do I care? Because travel is asmuch about people watching and I amcurrently totally intrigued by these twoactors'very diverse, currently essaying maleleads in two very different Indian soaps.I stumble upon Sobti thanks to a visitingfriend from Singapore. A highly intelligent, vibrant woman well on the other side ofForty (which is the new Thirty remember) Isee her transform into a slobbering idiotright before my eyes as she speaksanimatedly about her latest obsession, aStar TV soap called Iss Pyar Ko Kya NaamDoon and the dishy lead Barun Sobti. Somy wonderfully intellectual friend is now apart of online forums gushing, writingpaeans and being a "Fan Girl" as they allcall themselves.Kunal Karan Kapoor, or KKK to his phankagirls, is part of an unusual love storybetween a young widow and a bachelor,Naa Bole Tum Naa maine Kuch Kaha onColors. A very simple story told andenacted well with some great humor andgood music has catapulted this young actorinto "hero" bracket with swooning, mooning, adoring adulation. While Sobti sometimes goes shirtless in hisshow to generate mass hypertension,Kapoor accelerates heartbeats with histapori language and smiling eyes. And it istotally amazing how both work equal magicwith the Fan Girls! So is there an entiresegment of viewers out there who areevolving beyond saas-bahu? There seems ahuge online community happening thatdoes not reflect in the draconian TRPratings'probably NRIs who largely catchthe show after it's uploaded onto theinternet. These are the ones that compelledBBC Radio Asian Network's Noreen Khan todo not one but two interviews with Sobti!Apparently because Fan Girls went suicidalafter Sobti has gotten a Bollywood offer(But of course). They feared he may dumpthe soap box and hence deprive them oftheir daily fix!Very interestingly, KKK's girls went on arampage recently because they feel hisCreatives are turning his show into a "Saas-Bahu" saga of sorts! There are hugeprotests online on the steady "Ekta-fication" of this cute, funny-bunny show. The fan girls will not take it lying down andthey have claws! I couldn't stop cracking upwhen they decided to name the new writer-director of the show "dappu-jhappu" (allegedly for ruining it)Kunal's acting poweress has been inspiringblogs and essays from published writers.Well, yes. Yes! Women, of course. Butwomen with intellect, I must stress. Myfriend from Singapore, who stands aslobbering wasted woman today, is a highlyintelligent human being turned to jelly, donot forget .It is no longer de rigeur to be pretendingthat you do not watch Indian soaps in factconfessing crazy emotions for the men inthe supposedly women dominated serials istotally acceptable!Of course television has immense hold andpower. Isn't that why every Bollywood staris out there figuring out their own show?Every filmmaker is using these very serialsto promote their new releases? And, everybrand trying to integrate their product intothe content? It is heartening to see a new breed ofactors. Good looking, hardworking andstreet smart. It is even more delightful tosee evolving audience who not only adore--they analyze, criticize and are well armedwith information. It's been a long journeysince the Hum Log days for IndianTelevision. I am happy I hopped on for theride lately to experience part of it.I will leave Sobti to Singapore friend andmaybe settle for KKK. He defines himself astraveler and actor! A man after my ownheart.Posted by Ritu Agarwal RohatgiTags: TV, TRP, Naa Bole Tum Naa MaineKuch Kaha, Kunal Karan Kapoor, Iss PyarKo Kya Naam DoonComments(0)blogs.intoday.in/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=Tellyland-Trip.html&Itemid&main_category=62&contentid=62827&blogs=7
