I actually tried writing an FF before but never got a response, however I realized I didn't really like my own concept. I know many of you don't know me, so this is a nerve wracking experience, because I don't expect to garner a mass amount of readers. But whatever little readers I get, I will appreciate :). And try my best to please you. I am not good at writing character sketches, so I will just begin...do leave your suggestions etc. It is a bit of a thriller/crime drama as well. This is a small beginning excerpt.

To Live Another Day
Part 1

A hand slammed loudly against the desk in the dimly lit room. Arnav looked up, recognizing the face stepping out from the shadows. He knew this face all too well, it was a face that brought him the onset of trouble, while still brining him the wishful thinking that his life would come to have meaning some day.

"Max," Arnav whispered under his breath "it's such a sad thing that we always have to meet under such conditions," a sarcastic grin spread across Arnav's face.

"You were never good at introductions were you Arnav?" Max replied in his monotonous voice.

"Arnav? I don't know who that is...not like I exist," Arnav muttered, mostly to himself but in ear shot of Max.

"Nobody exists Arnav, not me, not you, so stop trying to bring some kind of miserable meaning to your life, you knew from day one that people like us have no other life," Max said, in the same unemotional, monotonous tone.

Arnav didn't usually mind Max's voice, but today he could hear the cold, unemotional soul beneath the words. What had Max become? Were they the same two young men who had entered the program together? Was his voice now as devoid of emotion as Max's voice? Was he slowly becoming devoid of emotion? But of course he wasn't, he was still conflicted, still confused, he still had desires and hope...he hadn't become a robot, not yet anyways.

"Arnav?! Did you hear me?!" Max yelled, but with no hint of anger.

"What?" Arnav said, snapping back from his thoughts to the cold and dark room.

"Khushi Kumari Gupta," Max repeated slowly.

"Is this the name of the new project?" Arnav asked, confused.

"Yes, it is. Open the file," Max said pointing to the file he had slammed on to the desk before.

Arnav slowly dragged the file towards himself, the least bit interested to start a new project. He opened it slowly to find a picture of a girl, black and white, walking through a rain storm, attempting to wrap her coat around her from the raging wind. "What am I to do Max?" Arnav asked, as if he was a machine ready to take on a command.

"Your next mission is to pretend to be her husband-" Max began but was sharply cut off by Arnav.

"What?!" Arnav said, getting up out of his chair "this was never a part of the job description."

"The job never had a description Arnav, and stop getting so excited and sit down, your acting like you haven't seen a woman in years," Max said, a hint of humour in his voice.

"Max," Arnav said, trying to suppress his anger at Max taking a jab at him "I've never been on such a...a...mission" Arnav tried to hide how idiotic he thought the task that was being given to him was. Mission would have been the last thing he called this.

"Arnav, this girl was the reporter we had spoken about earlier, she's our key to busting one of the biggest drug cartels in the country and unmasking the faces behind them," Max said.

"Then what is the point of me acting like her husband, what, am I just going to walk in and convince her that I am her husband?" Arnav said, his anger starting to rise.

"No, we're not idiots Arnav, and I think you know that. She was hospitalized after the incident, we spoke to the doctors and her memory of the past year of has totally been erased. Retrograde amnesia. That's where you come in, your going to help her get her memory of that incident back and report everything back to us" Max replied.

"Why can't we just tell her what happened and put her in to protective custody? How can I help if I'm not really her husband? I can't invoke any sort of past emotion or memory," Arnav tried reasoning with Max.

"That's why you will be working with a team of neurologists, psychiatrists...we don't give a damn if her memory ever comes back, we just want her to remember that one incident before her accident. And since she doesn't have total memory loss we can't put her in to protective custody, she wouldn't cooperate" Max replied cooly, oblivious to Arnav's rising anger.

Arnav cooled down before speaking, "and why is that?" he mumbled.

"Because when she was young, her father had seen a crime and was killed while under protective custody, she's always had a mistrust for authority figures since...and the whole crime fighting force in general."

Arnav sighed, "and look what a predicament she's in now, heading towards those she loathed," Arnav sighed once more, beginning to feel pity on what was supposed to be his mission.

"We just need the memory Arnav," Max said. "Anyways, I will meet you again tonight, introduce you to the team you will be working with, we need you to get on this right away. Your not only going to act like her husband, but your also going to protect her like one. We hid her away in a very remote hospital, where nobody will be able to guess where she is...but they will find out, and come after her."

"Got it," Arnav whispered. With that Max began to walk away, "Max!" Arnav yelled to Max's back, before he was about to step out of the room. "Why did you choose me for this?" he asked, letting his curiosity get the best of him.

A smirk crept up on Max's face, but not a sarcastic smirk, a smirk mixed with emotions of apathy and some kind of emotion conflicting it. "Because Arnav, your the only one who still cares," he replied. And with that Max left the room, leaving Arnav baffled.

Part 2- Segment One

Arnav walked in to the dimly lit hospital hallway leading to the ICU, he paced himself slowly, as if he could buy himself more time before embarking on this mission. He had never been so nervous in years, his palms sweaty and his heart beating quickly out of his chest. When was the last time he acted affectionately towards someone, when was the last time he shared a meaningful relationship with someone? Now here he was, pretending to be some unknown girl's husband.

Completely lost in his thoughts he bumped in to a nurse, she almost slipped before Arnav grabbed her by the shoulders and steadied her. "I'm so sorry...I...sorry, sorry" Arnav mumbled under his breath.

"It's okay," the nurse replied and quickly walked away. Arnav straightened himself out and took a deep breath, don't stop now he thought. The walk to Khushi's room was a blur, Arnav almost passed her room until he abruptly stopped himself. He walked a couple of steps back and took another deep breath. Much to his dismay the curtain had been drawn on the small glass window in the door. Maybe if he looked at her he would be more prepared? Just do it already! He shouted at himself in his head.

Suddenly he heard the voice of Max inside his head, seriously Arnav? Your really going to jeopardize the mission because of your inability to converse with those of the opposite sex? "Shut up" Arnav said to the voice inside his head. He grabbed the doorknob quickly, almost as if he was proving something to Max, and quickly turned the knob and abruptly swung open the door.

**

"Ah!" Khushi said dropping her spoon inside her soup at the sudden noise of the door opening. She looked up to find her husband standing at the door. Of course this was the same person in the pictures the doctor had showed her. Khushi stared at him up and down, letting her eyes explore every part of his body. Suddenly she stopped looking, and turned her face to stare at her meal. She felt a wave of embarrassment coming over her, how openly she had stared at him, as if he was some piece of property. But it was only natural right? She thought, to stare at someone who was now suddenly your husband, to look at this person you had supposedly married. To see if he would irk any memory.

Tears began brimming the edge of Khushi's eyes, she couldn't remember the last year of her life and now she had a husband she didn't know and events she couldn't remember. Khushi couldn't remember the accident that had brought her here, leaving her in control of nothing and dependent upon others. That's what scared her, being dependent upon others. Ever since her father passed away when she was twelve years old, she had no one. She fended for herself, bouncing from one adoption home to the other. Eventually struggling her way to journalism school at NYU and moving back to Chicago, her hometown.

But now she was dependent, dependent upon doctors and nurses, a man she had no memory of. Even her memory wasn't her own, it was someone else's. And only someone else could give it back to her. "I'm sorry," whispered Khushi under her breath "I just, the door...you just...I was a bit flustered is all."

"No don't be," Arnav replied quickly. Khushi looked up to meet eyes with Arnav, they both stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity. Khushi looked at his face, it was a handsome face, but it was rough and stoic. Almost emotionless, however there was a hint of some sort of emotion, mixed with pain and guilt that was breaking through his eyes. Arnav broke the stare looking away, but Khushi allowed her eyes to linger a little longer.

"How are you feeling now?" Arnav asked as he stepped towards her. Khushi didn't say anything at first, but finally a "fine" escaped her lips.

"I understand how hard all this is for you," Arnav said, starting to speak his rehearsed lines. "I mean, I can't imagine what this feels like for you and I'm sorry I couldn't be there to stop it."

"Don't be sorry," Khushi replied in a hushed tone "and I can't imagine how this feels for you...to have...to have...to have your-" Khushi cut off, tears beginning to brim her eyes again. "To have your, your...your wife" Khushi couldn't hold back her tears any longer and broke out in to tears, sobbing. She sobbed heavily, her shoulders heaving up and down and she took in a deep breath.

Arnav stood there astounded, paralyzed. What would he do now? He stood there, racking his brain for ideas. Remember to be comforting, loving, the voice of the team psychologists boomed in his head. He walked over towards Khushi, taking a deep breath before lifting his shaking hand and placing it on her shoulders. It was as if she didn't even notice his hand, she continued sobbing.

Arnav gulped, taking another steps towards her and this time bringing both his hands to her shoulders. He then pulled her shaking body towards him, and let her head rest on her chest and wrapped his arms around her trembling body. "I'm here," he whispered.

Suddenly Khushi pushed Arnav, he abruptly stepped back. Khushi realized what she had done, "I'm sorry...I...I'm sorry...I" she began muttering furiously. "I'm just not used to all of this," she said after taking a deep breath to calm herself down.

"I didn't mean to startle you," Arnav mumbled under his breath. "Let's go home," he said, meeting Khushi's eyes. Khushi opened her mouth to reply when a sound in the corridor stopped her. A shrill scream of a woman echoed through the corridors.

"AHHH!!!"

"What was that?" Khushi asked, a feeling of fear taking over her body. It was a scream that sent shivers down her spine, a scream that was full of fear.

Suddenly Arnav's uncomfortable exterior changed to someone who was composed, confident and alert. "I'll go check it out," Arnav said, turning around and walking out of the room.

"No wait!" Khushi yelled, but by that time he was gone.
