Ananya Pandey - Chanel girl
Arnav walked in to the dimly lit hospital hallway leading to the ICU, he paced himself slowly, as if he could buy himself more time before embarking on this mission. He had never been so nervous in years, his palms sweaty and his heart beating quickly out of his chest. When was the last time he acted affectionately towards someone, when was the last time he shared a meaningful relationship with someone? Now here he was, pretending to be some unknown girl's husband.
Completely lost in his thoughts he bumped in to a nurse, she almost slipped before Arnav grabbed her by the shoulders and steadied her. "I'm so sorry...I...sorry, sorry" Arnav mumbled under his breath.
"It's okay," the nurse replied and quickly walked away. Arnav straightened himself out and took a deep breath, don't stop now he thought. The walk to Khushi's room was a blur, Arnav almost passed her room until he abruptly stopped himself. He walked a couple of steps back and took another deep breath. Much to his dismay the curtain had been drawn on the small glass window in the door. Maybe if he looked at her he would be more prepared? Just do it already! He shouted at himself in his head.
Suddenly he heard the voice of Max inside his head, seriously Arnav? Your really going to jeopardize the mission because of your inability to converse with those of the opposite sex? "Shut up" Arnav said to the voice inside his head. He grabbed the doorknob quickly, almost as if he was proving something to Max, and quickly turned the knob and abruptly swung open the door.

"Ah!" Khushi said dropping her spoon inside her soup at the sudden noise of the door opening. She looked up to find her husband standing at the door. Of course this was the same person in the pictures the doctor had showed her. Khushi stared at him up and down, letting her eyes explore every part of his body. Suddenly she stopped looking, and turned her face to stare at her meal. She felt a wave of embarrassment coming over her, how openly she had stared at him, as if he was some piece of property. But it was only natural right? She thought, to stare at someone who was now suddenly your husband, to look at this person you had supposedly married. To see if he would irk any memory.
Tears began brimming the edge of Khushi's eyes, she couldn't remember the last year of her life and now she had a husband she didn't know and events she couldn't remember. Khushi couldn't remember the accident that had brought her here, leaving her in control of nothing and dependent upon others. That's what scared her, being dependent upon others. Ever since her father passed away when she was twelve years old, she had no one. She fended for herself, bouncing from one adoption home to the other. Eventually struggling her way to journalism school at NYU and moving back to Chicago, her hometown.
But now she was dependent, dependent upon doctors and nurses, a man she had no memory of. Even her memory wasn't her own, it was someone else's. And only someone else could give it back to her. "I'm sorry," whispered Khushi under her breath "I just, the door...you just...I was a bit flustered is all."
"No don't be," Arnav replied quickly. Khushi looked up to meet eyes with Arnav, they both stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity. Khushi looked at his face, it was a handsome face, but it was rough and stoic. Almost emotionless, however there was a hint of some sort of emotion, mixed with pain and guilt that was breaking through his eyes. Arnav broke the stare looking away, but Khushi allowed her eyes to linger a little longer.
"How are you feeling now?" Arnav asked as he stepped towards her. Khushi didn't say anything at first, but finally a "fine" escaped her lips.
"I understand how hard all this is for you," Arnav said, starting to speak his rehearsed lines. "I mean, I can't imagine what this feels like for you and I'm sorry I couldn't be there to stop it."
"Don't be sorry," Khushi replied in a hushed tone "and I can't imagine how this feels for you...to have...to have...to have your-" Khushi cut off, tears beginning to brim her eyes again. "To have your, your...your wife" Khushi couldn't hold back her tears any longer and broke out in to tears, sobbing. She sobbed heavily, her shoulders heaving up and down and she took in a deep breath.
Arnav stood there astounded, paralyzed. What would he do now? He stood there, racking his brain for ideas. Remember to be comforting, loving, the voice of the team psychologists boomed in his head. He walked over towards Khushi, taking a deep breath before lifting his shaking hand and placing it on her shoulders. It was as if she didn't even notice his hand, she continued sobbing.
Arnav gulped, taking another steps towards her and this time bringing both his hands to her shoulders. He then pulled her shaking body towards him, and let her head rest on her chest and wrapped his arms around her trembling body. "I'm here," he whispered.
Suddenly Khushi pushed Arnav, he abruptly stepped back. Khushi realized what she had done, "I'm sorry...I...I'm sorry...I" she began muttering furiously. "I'm just not used to all of this," she said after taking a deep breath to calm herself down.
"I didn't mean to startle you," Arnav mumbled under his breath. "Let's go home," he said, meeting Khushi's eyes. Khushi opened her mouth to reply when a sound in the corridor stopped her. A shrill scream of a woman echoed through the corridors.
"AHHH!!!"
"What was that?" Khushi asked, a feeling of fear taking over her body. It was a scream that sent shivers down her spine, a scream that was full of fear.
Suddenly Arnav's uncomfortable exterior changed to someone who was composed, confident and alert. "I'll go check it out," Arnav said, turning around and walking out of the room.
"No wait!" Khushi yelled, but by that time he was gone.
