Just when we think bv script writers have regressed to the previous century, they make a big, bold statement. Shiv offering shoulder to bhago was a great moment but equally so, perhaps more so, was Anandi stepping forward to light the pyre. It was a great, progressive step -- unthinkable in a village setting. Only Anandi can do ths.

The enormous significance of the daughter lighting the pyre -- assuming anandi does it-- ought not to be missed and I think it is part of BV's social message. I like how they are doing it so subtly. Even in urban areas, it is only lately that women have started attending funderals. I would put most of my friends in the socially progressive category-- they have had second marriages with children from the first etc but somehow they have haven't gone far enough on conducting funeral rites. One of my friends is from an all-female, very celebrated family. But when her father died, they asked a male cousin to light the pyre. I asked her about this as she was very tearful over not being able to do what any male heir would have automatically done. She said the priests flatly refused to conduct the ceremony with her in the lead.In recent times, Mallika Sarabhai lit her mother's or father's pyre. There have been a few other instances here and there. Therefore this is a fantastic social message, a message that breaks the myth of the exalted place of the male heir. I do hope cvs show this..

It is no longer a taboo for a girl to not to lit the pyre of her parents. I have done that when my late mom died although many had raised objections as they wanted a male member of the family should do this ritual. But as I was the only child , my father let me do the needful . I am really grateful to my father to do the last rites of my late Mom. From that day onwards I was considered as one of the most awed and respected members of the family. Even the priests have appreciated my efforts. So in this case Anandi did the right thing for her mother. It has really shown that she has broken the age old stereotype barriers and customs and thereby looking ahead.

salute you for this; believe me what you have done is not easy to do. As for Anandi, a divorcee daughter doing this in a village setting is a remarkable message.

I think its great since many families crave for a male child specifically for the purpose of having someone to light their funeral pyre ... even if they will never depend on the male child for anything in terms of income or any other kind of support ... they still want a boy child for this purpose of last rites.
To have anandi light the pyre is brilliant and beautiful because it will open parents' minds to the possibility that even a female child will be able to do the last rites.

Times are definitely changing.Nowadays we do hear about daughters performing the last rites of their parents like lighting the funeral pyre specially from Southern parts of India.
I dont know how it is in the North. But if they make Anandi perform the job that will give out good message a daughter is as good as a son.
