It is definitely a paradigm shift in the activities of female members of a family to break such age old tradition and set a new example in terms of performing the rituals which were solely done by the male members. If a couple does not have a male heir and have only female heir , in such cases who is going to take the responsibilities of the parents ? I believe it should be the offspring (female) who should shoulder all the responsibilities of a responsible child. The transition has started nowadays in many parts of the country especially south and east. Such paradigm shift is required as such kind of hype over male child will decrease eventually and female infanticide will be curbed in days to come .

Agree with you: the abysmal sex ratio in the north tells you the story of male-child obsession. We have found in surveys that the sex-ratio is often worse in the urban areas -- suggesting the prejudice is irrespective of education,
It is amazing that BV has done so many things without getting preachy and OTT. Shiv's gender-sensitivity is beautiful yet understated. He conveys so much with so few words. Anandi's gyan to Jagya after the divorce was so moving and meaningful. Sumitra's letter to Anandi was again a wonderful gesture. And DS -- she is terribly annoying at itimes -- but look at how effortlessly the serial has carried out her transition from a tyrant matriarch to a socially progressive elder relative.
This serial doesn't stop surprising me. I hope they don't do something funny with shiv's mom: i hate the multi-coloured bindi varieties. Every character -- Jagya and Guari including -- has been believable so far. Jagya's yo-yoing nature is so understandable. He does love his family. He craves for an affectionate word from them -- and when he doesn't get it he becomes violent instead of turning the mirror inward. Isn't that realistic? It does take all kind to make the world.
