UNCOMFORTABLE WITH CHILDREN'S LOVE SONGS

When I see the children on SRGMP singing mature love songs, it makes me feel uncomfortable. Come on, a child of 8 or 10 singing songs about love, passion, touching, longing, desire just doesn't sound right!
But then, on thinking I realise that most Hindi songs are based on just on one theme - LOVE. Hindi films are obsessed with love, that too love between a man and woman. All other forms of love - between parents, between siblings, between friends, uncles and nieces etc etc take a back seat. There are just a handful of good children's songs, and these were in the black and white era.
I would love to see lyricists writing songs about a myriad of other subjects, not just love, though I am not belittling the importance of love. Situational songs which are related to particular situations, funny songs, playful songs, teasing songs - we need more of these.
I guess it is impossible to expect too much of novelty from todays film makers.

I know what you mean Punjiniji, some of the songs the kids sing make me cring because it is a child's voice singing an adult song.

What I don't understand is why there aren't that many kids songs any more? No more lakdi ki katis, phulo ka taron ka, and whatnot....people only want love and that isn't the only aspect of life.

I guess some love songs are OK for them to sing. But ones that have sexual innuendo w/lyrics focusing on passion and desire doesn't sound right coming from a 8, 10 or even 13 year old. I doubt the kids are comfortable singing those songs.

Most films deal with love. I guess that's why we have so many love songs and so few songs on other subjects or other types of love besides romantic love. But some recent films like Lage Raho Munnabhai have some situational songs. Fanaa had a situational song, Chanda Chamke. But yes, its true we don't see situational songs too often. Maybe because they aren't too popular with listeners. MDs want their albums to be hits, regardless of the quality or novelty of the songs.

At least, Himani and Ujjaini were old enough to do whatever they said they wanted to do. But what about these kids?! Sickening! If I were a film maker or music director, I can think of a thousand situations calling for songs, in which the lyricist would have to do some innovative writing.

I guess I look at it from even wider angle... why just them singing such songs should make us uncomfortable... what about them watching something that they shouldn't.... forget about R (restricted) rated movies, even in the normal movies what I see was not something we used to see just a decade back. All those item songs with dozen and dozens of scantily clad girls gyrating their hips... that has become so common that kids in India do not feel anything about it. And see the clothes that the leading ladies are wearing these days in the normal movies...they don't wear anything other than mini mini skirts and real short shorts...as if that are the regular normal clothes for young family girls.

Few years back when I was in India visting my wife parents home, I was suprised to see something. Many kids of her relatives had come to grandma's house in summer and all of them were watching a "family" movie with grand parents that had many "real" seductive item numbers and the entire family was enjoying all. Grad parents did not feel uncomfortable kids watching them, neither did the kids feel uncomfortable watching them with grand parents. Because the elders and kids are now used to such scenes and it has become part of their routine entertainment. I guess similarly the parents now do not feel anything about kids singing songs with deep passion and desire. It just has become a part of their life.
