Chapter 3
'You were late by a full 45 minutes,' the HUNK said...Arnav Singh Raizada, Khushi corrected in her mind or rather ASR. She remembered NK telling that people called him ASR.
He was giving her a look that would have scared a person to death...if that person had not been Khushi Kumari Gupta.
She squared her shoulders prepared to explain and so she began 'Actually, I took an auto, then it broke down and then...'
'To cut a long story short, it was all the fault of others and not you,' he interrupted.
'Well kind of...you see...then I took another auto...' Khushi continued only to be interrupted again.
'And let me guess there was a traffic jam,' Arnav filled in the gap.
'How did you know?" Khushi asked a little surprised.
'I know...This is the 101st time I have heard this excuse and the 101st time I choose to disbelieve it. But at least the others wait for some time before making excuses. But you gave it on day one' Arnav concluded.
Khushi was outraged. How could he think she was lying? She never lied! And she was furious he had challenged the truth of her statement.
'I am telling you the truth. Well people who take the public transport face such issues,' she said and then took a dig at him, 'People who always ride cars won't know this'.
ASR gave her a glare enough to turn her to ashes on the spot. But Khushi stood her ground. Her Dad had taught her that when truth is by one's side, there was nothing to fear.
The girl needs to be taken down a peg or two. First, she was wrong. Second, she was arguing despite being wrong.
'Ok. Don't do it from tomorrow,' he concluded. Momentarily Khushi was nonplussed but delighted she had won.
Arnav let her have her peace for a minute.
'So tell me, you are here to do copywriting right?' he asked.
'Of course. It is something I am very passionate about,' she said beaming.
'Ok can you come with copies for things suddenly, under pressure with very little time?" he asked.
'Yeah I sure can,' she said, still beaming.
'Ok I will do a quick round with you since I did not have the pleasure of interviewing you. I will tell products...mind you they may be bizarre' but you have to come up with a slogan for each. Ready?" he challenged.
By the time she left, Khushi Kumari Gupta would be down by a few pegs as far as her massive ego and big mouth was concerned, he thought to himself.
Khushi was nervous. Well what did he mean by saying 'bizarre' products. She chewed her lower lips in stress.
Arnav gave a smirk of pure satisfaction. The chit of a girl was nervous. Well he would go all the way for the kill now, he thought.
'Ok first product: Men's underwear' he said brazenly.
He almost laughed when her mouth fell open and her cheeks flamed a crimson red and her eyes rounded as saucers.
'You have a minute Miss Khushi,' ASR said.
After the initial shock, Khushi's spirit was back. No one, but just about no one challenged her talent and she would show him how good a copywriter she was.
'Makes you feel like a man, inside-out' she said triumphantly.
This time ASR was shocked but he did not show it. He would make the next one tougher and even more bizarre.
'Shit,' he said.
'Why what happened?" Khushi asked.
'That is the next product,' ASR almost grinned seeing her wrinkle up her nose.
'Love it or hate it. But do it' Khushi said.
Arnav was impressed with her talent and presence of mind. But he wasn't going to let her win.
He had to make it more embarrassing for her. So he threw the next word at her 'Sex'
Khushi blushed and was unable to meet his eyes. She was unable to utter a word...it brought to her mind a lot of things...especially her parents telling her about what she should never talk about in front of a man. She just could not say anything and stood there tongue tied.
'Cat got your tongue? You have an extra minute to come up with something, he said, knowing very well she was quite because of embarrassment and not because she did not have the talent.
Another minute lapsed as Khushi tried to get something out of her mouth but failed.
'Hm...So I see you have your limitations as a copywriter. Be mindful of the fact and work harder,' he said being his meanest best. But her beaming face had become a small crumpled one...and ASR did not feel great about that. He shrugged off the feeling
...
'Meanie! Such a meanie! And to think I got so carried away by him. Looks are just looks. Handsome men don't have a heart...I will never react to him in the future. He doesn't deserve it.
Forget your first crush Khushi Kumari Gupta.
The world is a big place and you will find someone nicer if not hotter and smarter. Next time I see him I will not feel this crazy feeling of infatuation. I promise myself!' she consoled herself...
That was till the next time she saw him and her heart melted at what she saw...
