Most of the recent romantic movies have not worked well at the box office. Movies like EMAET, EDT, TNLHG, Ishqazaade and TMK have been average or flop.
What do you think?

Personally...I loved all of them except TNLH which I didn't see!!

I think there's a shift with the audience preferring the action genre more...Dabbang/singham/rowdy rathore have all been 100 crore movies...even a slapstick comedy like housefull 2 did amazing business!!

The reason is audience can be classified as the multiplex or the single screen audience...
Rom coms generally find favour with the first! But action/comedy have a wider appeal...Especially hard core action...coz I think our generation has not been exposed to movies like deewar...i for one thoroughly enjoyed agneepath!!

Yes...romance is simply not in. But to be fair none of the romantic movies released this year have been great. Most of them like EMAET, TNLHG have been wannabeish. The directors of these films havent been successful in forming a connect between the audience and their characters which is essential for a romantic film to click. The fact that there is no stopping action-comedy-romance masala films right now hasnt helped matters either. In any case I think we as an audience have moved on from the sweet romantic films of the 90s. Most people prefer to see more gritty romances like Ishaaqzaade right now.

People are just sick and tired of seeing the same old cheesy romance over and over again.

Well it's true that we are seeing a shift towards the masala action genre and romance isn't as "in" as say 10 years back, and it's only normal. Change is a fact of life. But I don't think romantic films will ever be truly dead. Most of the masala action films have a love story in them too. The main problem is most of the love stories out today have faulty scripts, bad editing, superficial stuff basically. They're cheesy, annoying, and too repetitive. The director/producer/writer focus on good songs + STYLE + big names rather than substance for romance films and after about 20 years of family drama + romance, style + popular names just doesn't cut it.
Most love stories follow the same plot path--boy girl meet, fall in love, get separated/fight about something, get back together..yayy happy ending. What makes some stand out is their TREATMENT. When somebody gets the treatment right again, then the romantic film will rake in the moolah again.
As for the films you mentioned, I've only seen EMAET, TNLHG, and bits of EDT. EMAET has a second half that drags almost beyond the point of redemption honestly..I almost fell asleep when they're in India. Better editing would have helped that film. TNLHG is the cheesy, overdramatic, OTT family drama that we had back in the 90's...it was okay, nothing worth remembering. EDT had some awful acting from whatever I saw..

Only masala movies or some different movies like Kahaani and VD seems to be working these days. The last romantic movie I liked was MFK.

^When there is a GOOD romantic film with a GOOD storyline and likable characters, it will work.
You're right, MFK was the last enjoyable rom-com.

Kahani wasn't really a romantic movie... it's more on a thriller/suspense side.

I actually liked EMAET... I thought it was a different take on the usual Bollywood romantic films... because the 2 characters don't end up together at the end even though the film's story is a bit like JWM... but the performance from bebo and imran made it enjoyable... they played their character so subtly and no OTT moments... their characters seemed real and genuine

I also liked TMK... yeah some of the stories were so artificial... like the modern take on love... wasn't believable at all... but I liked the 1960 and 1930 story.

That said... I wouldn't watch these two movies again... it's a one time watch kind of film... I have yet to find a modern romantic film that I can watch over and over again... for now favs are JWM and DDLJ
