2005, Jaipur: Chasing 299 for victory against Sri Lanka, India suffered a big blow when they lost Sachin Tendulkar for just two to Chaminda Vaas. No worries, in comes Mahendra Singh Dhoni, smashes 183 off 145 balls to take India through. He saved the best for the last, bringing up the winning runs with a six off Tillakaratne Dilshan.
2007:
Under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership, India won the inaugural T20 World Cup after beating Pakistan in the final. The entire nation went into a frenzy, when Misbah-ul-Haq scooped Joginder Sharma to Sreesanth, to give India victory by 5 runs.
2007 /08 - After the acid test against the touring Australians, Dhoni faced yet another challenge in Pakistan's tour of India. India though racked up some huge totals; chased some down as well to set up a 3-2 series win against the Pakistanis. The series win was Dhoni's first taste of ODI success in his new role as the captain of the side.
The ODI series win in Australia can easily rank as one of India's best ever on a foreign soil. The team played well right through the lengthy series and ended up winning the best of three finals by 2-0. Dhoni's astute captaincy was praised by all the cricketing pundits and his ability to stay cool under pressure was marveled by all. Dhoni proved good with the bat as well averaging nearly seventy.
India arrived in Sri Lanka after losing the Kitply Cup to Pakistan and the Asia Cup finals to Sri Lanka. Questions were raised on India's ability to handle the spin of their wrecker-in-chief Ajantha Mendis. In Sri Lanka, India not only tackled Mendis, but did enough to beat the Lankans by a margin of 3-2. Captain Dhoni made his contributions with the bat and registered two fifties in the five match ODI series.
2008 /09 - India returned to Sri Lanka to play an ODI series, and ended up winning the series 4-1. The team was ruthless in their approach and won the first four ODI's on a trot, with Lanka winning the last one-day match. Dhoni was once again in full form as captain and as a batsman. He scored 266 runs in the one-day series and smashed three fifties, including a series best of 94 runs.
2009 - The four match series saw India claim yet another ODI series win abroad. Fresh from the T20 WC debacle in England, Dhoni rallied the side to a 2-1 series win against Chris Gayle's West Indies side. Dhoni was again at it with bat, hitting a series best 95 runs.
2010 - After VVS Laxman's heroics in Mohali, India under MS Dhoni went on to lift the Border Gavaskar trophy after defeating Australia by 7 wickets in Bangalore.
- Mahendra Singh Dhoni led Chennai to their maiden IPL triumph after they defeated the Mumbai Indians by 22 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
2010 - Chasing the Warriors' total of 128/7 in the Champions League T20 final proved to be a cinch for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's boys, as they won by 8 wickets to win their maiden CL T20 title in Johannesburg.
Under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership, India became the top-ranked Test team in the world. In 2010, India defeated Bangladesh, Australia and New Zealand, and drew with South Africa (2) and Sri Lanka.
Man-of-the-Match Mahendra Singh Dhoni struck 91*, and brought up the winning runs with a six, as India beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets to win the 2011 World Cup.
Again Chennai Super kings under Mahendra Singh's Dhoni retained their IPL title in the fourth edition of league and had also been finalists in the previous IPL season (5)
