Rihhaee launches 24-hour women's help line

BAG Films and Sony TV have launched a 24-hour Rihhaee help line for women, along with the National Commission for Women (NCW).

The help line has two numbers — 09324440401 and 09324440402 — and will come into effect from today. The person calling for assistance can also email rihhaeehelpline@bagfilms.com.

Speaking to hitList, BAG managing director Anuradha Prasad said the help line would take the show closer to audiences and get involved with their problems.

Anuradha Prasad
"One of the main reasons why women continue to suffer in India is that they don't know who to approach when in trouble.

Four people (three boys and one girl) with Masters degrees in social work have been recruited and trained at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai) and Susamvad (Pune) and will man it around-the-clock.

They will not only refer cases to NGOs which have been mapped throughout the country, but will also offer counselling in the initial stages while taking to them."

Police control rooms and police stations have also been approached to reach out to distressed callers; the identity of callers will be kept secret. Legal aid has also been arranged.

"However, we are not lawmakers, so we will not be able to sit in judgement and take cases to their logical conclusion. But we feel that the help line will put sufferers on the right track," concluded Prasad.

She said there was no credence to reports of Rihhaee going off-air. "Sony is very happy with the show. Else would they accept this innovation of introducing a help line?" she asked.

This is a great show which is finally making Indian people realize all the hardships many women suffer with, and hopefoully encouraging women in such positions that life can be better.

With the help line I hope more women are helped and can break the wrongful ties much of society has placed on them.

India is progressing so quickly economically, however socially it is not as fast. I hope one day India will not be a country with high rates of infanticide and other forms of abuse (especially against women).
