The glittering moonlight washed in through the open windows, illuminating the otherwise dim room.
Sitting on her bed, she lazily watched the curtains as they rustled to the beats of the cool breeze sweeping into the room.
The moonlight travelled further into the room and fell onto her feet making her anklets twinkle like stars.
Pulling her feet closer, she removed the anklets and set them beside her on the bed.
Yet another supposed 'gift' from her husband for their third marriage anniversary...which happened to be today.
Unlike other marriages, this was not an occasion that was celebrated.
This was a painful reminder...a reminder of that day which had killed all her hopes, dreams and wishes...when things had spiralled so horribly out of control that to this day, she was still reeling from its effects.
Her fingers reached for the small diamond pendant resting on the hollow of her throat... all gifts given to her for their previous anniversaries...gifts she had never personally received from him...gifts she knew, had been arranged by her mother-in-law.
And yet she still wore them...because she knew it made her mother-in-law happy.
Because even though her mother- in-law had tried to hide it, she knew very well that it was her who had gotten those gifts, not her husband.
Resting against the headboard, she pulled the covers over her legs and glanced around the room which was barely illuminated by the moonlight filtering from outside.
Her haven...the only place she could let go of that strength that she had to carry with her at all times...the only place where she could let go.
Her mother-in-law always chided her for shrouding her room in such dim lights ...but how could she ever explain to her that the darkness always cloaked the harsh truths that always glared at her no matter where she looked.
Pushing herself lower, she lay down on the soft white sheets, her fatigued body instantly relaxing.
In a bid to forget what had happened on this day three years back, she usually made it a point to visit the children's orphanage. Surrounded, by the untainted innocence there, always instilled peace within her.
For those few hours, she could forget everything about her life and its complexities.
Today had been a particularly exhausting day.
Her eyes were aching to shut but she resolutely kept them open.
She couldnt sleep...not yet.
Not till she was sure he had reached home safely.
No matter how tired she was, she would never sleep without making sure he was safely home.
It had been that way since three years.
It didnt matter to her that they slept in different rooms...it didnt matter to her that he never checked on her like she did.
What mattered to her...was...him.
Her gaze was pulled towards the window as she heard the sound of tyres being against the wet ground.
Instantly she was on her feet heading to the window.
Standing hidden in the veil of the curtains, she peered out and her attention was immediately drawn towards the tall man stepping out of his car.
She watched him knowing his every movement by heart...he would first lock his car, then head over to the gates to talk to the security guard and then back to the car to check the locks again.
He walked towards the house and she moved away from the window as he entered inside.
Sitting on her bed, her ears picked up the sound of his shoes moving over the wooden staircase as he climbed the stairs.
She switched off the bedside lamp when she heard the soft sounds of his footsteps moving against the carpet in the corridor outside.
Lying back down on the bed, she closed her eyes when the sound of a door, being opened, reached her ears.
After a few seconds, the door shut with a soft click and she was instantly asleep.
