Painful Rapture Chapter 54
"Masters of their fates!"..Shakespeare
Dutta panted as he forced his body to work his cardio. The cross country did him good! as both his potent legs pumped up his Femoris muscles that flexed and tauted right down to the gradient of his Intermedius of his thigh, which writhed in tension as the Laterlis on his rounded smooth knee, propelled him forward by the pressure of his swelled lower leg Gastrocenmius muscles... .The gentle morning breeze kissed and caressed his blithe leopard like sprinting body. He screwed his nose and mouth every now and then while he sniffed and swallowed the saliva that built up in his mouth as he persisted at the fairly demanding cross country dash. His trainers tipped and lurched his complete body forward. With a jaw that twitched his narrow lion like eyes took in as much as he could up frontal view of his familiar School surroundings. With dual foci, one on the run and the other on his thoughts, he pounded and pummelled ahead on the cross country track. This without a doubt was the best possible method for him to thrash out pending issues and to let off steam as well, it was a technique that never let him down in the past. For him the key task at hand was the parade. Agreed that it would be on a small scale compared to their parade when they were commissioned. Nevertheless decorum and procedure had to be followed ,he mused as he hurled his body forward to maintain the rhythmical and mechanical requirement of the motions, he heaved and blinked his eyes for, whatever its worth, like a man with responsibility, Dutta was preoccupied as the fever of the passing out parade was full on. He swallowed as a reaction to allow the prevalence of calm, and he stopped and tarried a while, and seemingly checked his stopwatch, wiped his sweat ridden beaded brow with the side of his muscular elbow. He applied self assurance to himself as he defined to himself that all will be well.. if it's anything to do with him! and he turned to scale the distance back to the military school.

The notification foyer of the Military School bustled with officers, busily on the lookout for verification of grades. Dutta's officers huddled before the Infantry results, with apprehensive faces and eyes which pierced for their serial numbers and names. Tremendous relief lined their faces as they noted they all had got through. General body responses of hugs , high fives clapping and slapping of hands ensued amongst them. But the revelation of which one of them was bestowed upon the sword of honour was the crux of the achievement report. Khan stood speechless, her otherwise narrow oriental eyes glazed. The possibility of the news being untrue transported her into a split second trance, this had to be a delusion, how could a small town, ordinary girl win this honour. Her female colleagues along with her male counter parts congratulated her with gusto and envy. Bhatnagar slapped her shoulder,"well we both share the topper's glory together Khan!"she proclaimed, while Kapur threw in dryly yet good humouredly, "yes the clever clogs of the course!", "oyey I am just happy I got through otherwise I'd be whisked off to till the lands to plant seeds on my abba's zameenien" sounded off a much relieved Singh, but Kapur cracked back," and there too you would be eying the village belles and playing Ranjah tunes to attract their attention! rather then working to task!, Singh gave his friend and fellow officer an intoxicated look and went "ju bhi ho maagar aaj to glassy charhane he hai every body" he declared rubbing his palms. Once the penny had dropped that none of them had flunked they shook hands with each other, but a few of the adventurous ones like Singh shoved two bent fingers in his mouth to express joy for all with a short shrill of a whistle. As fate would have it their tutor emerged unexpectedly in the foyer, dressed in an olive green track bottom, with a woodland green T-shirt, under an dark olive green zipper track jacket! his stubble face stood aglow with a flushed healthy complexion. He bent his square head downwards towards his feet as his narrow eyes spotted a dry brown dead leaf stuck to the side of the sole of cross country trainer, with care he inclined and without subjecting his slender long fingers to soiling, his finger tips peeled of the dead leaf, from under his trainer sole and walked to the nearest disposal bin. Behind him the tittering of the female officers continued and with the army water flask held between his long fingers he calmly turned round to face his OUTs, and raised his eye brow and tilted his neck to one side, as he dampened their spirit of celebration, "hold your horses officers ! the day has just began, and by the looks of things it might have stopped here with your antics, may I remind you there lies a busy day tomorrow, so may I have a quick word with you lot in the gym on the double"!he commanded as he wiped his brow with his wide back hand. The females nearly swooned as their eyes feasted surreptitiously on their semi moist sweaty stubble faced athletic tutor! Frigid and forbearing as he was from the day they had first seen him, he cocked his head towards the direction he desired their assembly, and they saluted to attention and followed his order hot on his heels as he lead them towards the gym.
He entered first, it was evident to them he had attempted a two mile run as was his early morning habit, and therefore it was not a surprise that he took off his track jacket and dropped it on the bench behind him. He stood before them, his woodland green sweat shirt clung to his torso as it in full view revealed the curvature of his breast muscles. His brawny vein tracked arms clasped behind his back, Dutta inspected them with his traditionally perforated gazes. He walked up and down along the horizontal line they had formed before him. His fold of the indented stubble chin and slight nod of his head signalled to them that all was satisfactory. He turned, and faced them and let his lips part, as his clear throaty voice informed, "right! the purpose of this unannounced assembly in the gym, is related to forth coming events. But before that I wish to impart that, as your tutor as par say your results , which your selves have seen, I as your tutor am highly delighted by your results. For it is evident hard work and dedication does yield a good harvest ,so well done every body!" he expressed as he lightly felt the side of his nose. The Outs heard each and every word of his and felt the intense need to say "thank you", instead they knew that his preference at all times would be for them to maintain decorum and keep their faces and eyes fixed on him, so be it!. He looked at them and continued ,"now just wanted to go over a few things with you lot about tomorrow so stand at ease! , now my first question is I want a confirmation from all of you on this grid that your parents or guardians are coming for the parade. So you need to tick this now! secondly, I will be giving you their duplicate seat number for their place in the visitors stall in case they feel lost. Next thing is your uniform, has that been sorted? You do know it has to be in a full dress and not in camouflage combat clothes?, he waited for them to respond and continued after they confirmed in unison ."yes Sir"!, he continued with a raised his fore finger," now the ceremony starts at 11.00 on the dot. Breakfast will be served at 8.00 am giving you enough time to get ready and be at the parade ground for 10.00 am. I am apprised by the parade manager, Captain in charge, that you have participated well in your rehearsal and therefore any shortfall is unlikely and even if there is one ,then let me assure you I'll be there" he said curtly. He stood before them tall and stout his legs slightly apart, "ok now any questions? he queried, he moved his head and eyes, till they settled on Bhatnagar, "Sir once we get the pips of second lieutenant what would be our brief? ,Dutta looked at her his head held only just a little to his right, "well that's jumping the gun a bit officer ,so I say to all of you ,we'll cross that bridge when it comes but continue to wait till further orders" he remarked, dryly and added "ok dismissed now! and you can celebrate but within reason!.."he warned, inclined his body and reached out for his jacket, then semi marched out of the gym..leaving behind his Outs who jumped up with joy at the prospect of celebrating...

Dutta, woke up to "jagu mohan" rolled over in bed and nuzzled into her soft white chunni.."N aku, hummh, where are you baaby? he groaned as he ejected his hot breath into the piece of cloth, that was his replacement of her in his bed. Sure enough the phone rang, and he awakened to the dulcet sound of her giggles, "Saab ab abhi tak bed mein he ho?, ready nehi hona ap ko?aj ap ki parade hai" she reminded, he sniffed and raised an eye brow underneath a set of groggy eyes," oooahh Naku ab tu meri zindagi mein ah gaye hai tu har subah aisa he mera tu parade karye gi..ja ummh nehi utha abhi, tu ju uthe nehi deti... band ke rakha hai mujhe apni saath from all angles ,my chest my neck yahan tak ke my legs aur" Naku interrupted "aur mujhe nehi suna Saab ap ke is kism ke batieen" she said firmly, "hain? kis kism ke batien! you bloody jahil aurat? waise batieen? aur woh bhi tere sa ,you must be joking baaby ! get real! he retorted, Naku bit her lip snubbed, but persisted, "teekh hai at least you got the point main waise lardki nehi hai," she jibed, he heard ,and his eyes twinkled as he brushed her chunni on his naked hairy chest, "aacha! raat ko tu bara elements mein the tu, ek baar bhi mujhe nehi roka ,woh tu main ek aache ghar ka aache larka hoon, tu apne haad mein raha", Naku shook her head, "eh excuse me, woh tu maine ap to roka nehi tu like always you were losing it!"she prompt him, but changed the subject swiftly, "waise Saab ap ye batao ke ap ne mujhe kyon nehi invite kiya as a guest?", Dutta elbowed himself up and almost barked, "thujhe kis liya invite karta? tera Saab ya tera sapoot ko koi award mil raha tha? ya phir tu kisi dignitary ke begum hai? yehri kahein ki! baat kerte hai!",Naku giggled at his response, "koi nehi Saab mera time bhi aye ga jab mere Saab , ya mera bate ko award mila ga," she said quietly. He smiled, "ya dream on baaaby, not so soon though, pata hai Naku , I regret that when I received the sword of honour ,I never knew you that well ,like I know you now , but still baaby that's life ! you can't have everything, so I guess one must count one's blessings as and when.." he reflected aloud. She too agreed with his mode of thinking but still reminded him ,"Saab main jati hai , you have a good day, wish I could see you in uniform today.., but jaise ap ne bola har kuch nehi milta"!...she said sadly and the call ended.

The day dawned, the passing out parade ground stood empty but ready for the presentation ceremony. The grounds men had lined the grey concrete ground with brilliant white painted two rows of horizontal lines that demarcated one behind the other, the placement of the officers. Another narrow white lined segregated the cut of point between the visitors seating gallery and the officers. Behind the lines of officer placement stood hoisted on full mast the four regimental flags, red, navy ,turquoise, and yellow elevated at an equal distance on brilliant white crisply painted metal poles. The pride of the parade ground the seating gallery was under a corrugated metal shelter held up by a secure tubular frame. The idea was to give an impression of raw edge army life. The seats were traditional stackable four legged conference chairs in red vinyl. However for the families of the senior most officers and dignitaries there were salmon coloured three to two seater sofas, upheld in a Birchwood frame. Right before the seating arrangement stood the dais for the officers to receive the passing out parade. The stage was lined with burgundy red carpet, with a circular place rug set for the parade commander to stand upon, and another two red square place rugs for Dutta to stand upon. The elegant dais lay cordoned off in a three sided square by gold interlocked swaggered chains hooked to portable gleaming tubular golden knobbed posts.

Dutta stood before the mirror in his apartment. Today was the one off occasion when pomp, ceremony and valour of the stars, stripes and ribbons manifests itself, to marvel and to be esteemed. He looked at his dress uniformed reflection, a white coloured shirt buttoned up to his Adam's apple knotted up by a jet black tie, and atop the shirt his smart gold buttoned up black lapel collar jacket. Complete with two single pleat breast flap pockets buttoned up with a gold button, corresponding with two larger single pleated gold buttoned torso pockets. The jacket was secured around the waist by a black material belt adorned by a simple gold buckle. He pinned his horizontal rank slide braid to the flap of his right pocket. His fingers caught the plain single bar epaulette and pinned it to the shoulders of his jacket, followed by the red twisted shoulder cords that ran from underneath his epaulettes ,looped around his armpit and fell gracefully on the right side of chest. His eyes gleamed as he slapped on his cologne , combed his stubble and finally turned away from the dresser mirror to the full length mirror in his apartment. He finally checked his dress uniform clad self crisply turned out in a formal black jacket, with black trouser, inclusive with shiny black dress shoes that matched!... hummh he thought as he checked himself out with a gentle caresses to his cheek by his slender fingers.. "aache hai", but turned to finally dress his broad head...He fitted his black dress cap on his head complete with the three lions gold brooch pinned in the middle of the black ribbon band around the circumference of the imposing cap. Two gold laurels ran across symmetrically along the black visor of the dress cap. He smiled at his refection,.. "top gun! Dutta, he thumbed himself in the reflection, but he narrowed his eyes under the dress cap and said, "kash Naku you could see me now baaby! you'd be dead meat!"he chuckled and unwillingly tore himself from the mirror ,collected his key fob, phone and brief case and made way towards the parade ground.
Dutta walked smartly and slowly towards the parade ground, his main concern was his Outs. He saw them all placed in position from a distance and walked over to them and they clicked their heels and saluted him. He walked past to check their turn out. They stood there smartly in two rows behind the white painted parallel lines in full dress uniform black buttoned up Nehru collar jackets with matching black trousers and black dress shoes. Their jackets were belted from the waist with broad white belts and silver buckle to match the silver buttons, they held their rifle bayonets on their right side and their shoulder straps were strewn with twisted red shoulder cord underneath their right armpit. Upon their head similar to their tutor, they too wore a dress cap but with a sky blue band around the circumference of their cap. Dutta bowed his chin to the right side as he observed them with a firm face. He looked at Khan, and said " the horses are at the side building, you ready than?," she gave him a shy brief smile and than stiffened and shot her chest forward with a "yes Sir", and he nodded and muttered "good luck and I'll see you around, and remember no milling around with your families till the ceremony is over! "he warned and dug his heels and walked around to the dais area. He observed with a certain degree of pleasure at the well attendance. The place now bustled with visitors seated, others being shown to their places by smartly turned out junior officers in jet black trousers, jet black bush shirts with black buckled belts around their waists, and their rank insignias epaulettes and chevrons on their quarter sleeves. Amongst the audience were selected groups of family and friends invited by the passing out officers, to watch the prestigious moment when they formally move up in rank making it the proudest day of their lives, as their loved ones emotionally glimpse a step of these officers towards a successful career. It could be vividly seen that families came equipped with cameras to captivate these extra special memories to last a life time.
The ceremony began as Parekh stood forefront of the dais to accept the salute of the 15 officers of the infantry core. Dutta stood smartly positioned behind his senior officer and looked with immense pride at his Outs. All stood erect and held their bayonet rifles hung over their shoulders with broad white lanyards. They held up their rifles, brought it up front, clicked their heels and in quick motion brought the weapon back to their right sides and in unity performed the salute. The oath taking ceremony began with a pre-recorded booming voice that rang through the parade ground. The Outs stood to attention serious faced yet with eyes that spoke of an intrepid valour and so with chests puffed in utmost gallantry they repeated empathically against the amplified voice of the loud speaker, that they swore allegiance to defend their country, allegiance to comradeship, hard work, integrity, compassion and above all they swore allegiance to carrying out their duty at all times. Many a tears were felt at the background amplified sound of the national anthem at the finale of the oath taking ceremony.
Parekh and Dutta then carried the open jeep inspection. The silver army jeep moved gradually more or less followed the painted white marking. Across the two lines of Outs, the two senior officers turned their heads right and acknowledged the second stiff salute offered to them. The jeep stopped shortly at a distance while the two senior officers disembarked. Parekh lead the scrutinised inspection, and Dutta who loomed taller than his senior followed him like a tall militarised statement behind. Once the inspection procedure ended. Parekh walked to the extreme right hand side of the forefront line and looked behind him at the soldier behind him in full ceremonial plumed turban who handed him the pips one by one on a small red velvet cushion. Dutta, watched boosted by pride, yet with a tight mouth and a stiff face as he moved along the line, as his officers were pipped for their promotion rank of 2nd Lieutenant on their shoulder epaulette at the hands of his senior officer. He peered narrowly from under his dress cap as the last officer was given the rank pip. The moment had arrived for Khan to receive the sword of honour... her name was announced and she stepped forward out of the middle of the line marched forward towards Brig Parekh and raised her right knee upward's and slammed it to the ground with a stiff salute. Parekh turned and lifted the silver sword from the hilt and laid it across his palm and presented it to Khan, who accepted the flattened razor sharp sword on to her white gloved hands. The parade ground resounded with clapping and tremendous applause from the crowd as she brought her right gloved hand firmly around the sliver hilt raised it up above her head in the air, brought it to her forehead, brought it front, bowed it and moved it gently into the sword sheath hooked to her right side. The second achievement award was announced and Bhatnager in full grace and discipline moved forward, raised her right knee up ,slammed it down with might, saluted and stepped forward in full attention to be pinned the achievement medal on her the right side of her chest. Again great applaud followed and Bhatnagar heeled back to her centre place in the line. The formality completed, both Parekh and Dutta stepped back a little and once again acknowledged the final salute, as the jeep arrived for them to mount and be led to the dais again.
Before the final march past the formal speeches had to be given and hence Parekh, being the senior most officer in charge and dean of the school stood at the dais, "well officers! this indeed has to be a memorable for you all, the joy that you give not only to your selves but to your near and dear ones, today you have opened a new chapter in your lives , made discoveries about yourself in terms of reaching parts of determination that lay untapped..and so you made pledges along the way during tasks that were not for real but closest to the real. Every day that you woke up at the School became for you a learning experience , where your existing knowledge was stretched by your tutor" he paused briefly to look at his finest officer while a loud clatter of clapping followed, and Dutta pulled his lips to one side and smiled a shy smile with tiny rise of his eyebrow, Parekh raised his palm and continued "for it was your tutor ..who believed that he was no pourer of knowledge into his Outs! for he had conviction that you were not empty vessels ,but were an overflowing resource of knowledge and skills which you carried within yourselves, that just had to be channelized in the direction. So now that you have the skills and the knowledge of duty written upon your hearts, minds and souls, harken to the call of duty and move forth to attain the highest that you can reach for yourself and your country, Jai hind!" concluded Brigadier Parekh, amidst loud cheers and applause.
Dutta stood up from where he sat in the prime front seat of the raised stage and walked with magnificent authority towards the podium . Parekh as the Brigadier had finished his speech and now it was his turn to address his Outs. He looked up and began, "ladies and gentlemen it gives me tremendous pleasure to announce that the basic training of these officers now comes to an end after 14 weeks. The training has been physically demanding as these young officers worked on their fitness and tackled the army assault courses they were presented with. I can vouch ladies and gentleman, on their behalf, that it stretched and mentally taxed these officers as they learnt new skills, yet this moment is what goaded them to achieve their full potential". Dutta held his head high and spoke with conviction, "ladies and gentlemen, here at the Military school these officers are taught to take pride in themselves, their individual behaviour, their work and the unit they belong to. Dutta moved his dress capped head slowly and with an emphatic voice continued as this time he addressed his officers , "remember in the armed forces, we set our own standards, which are not just a string of words but denote a set clear rules that we as soldiers are at all times expected to uphold! Our lives then are the quintessence of these rules and regulations. You have learnt here the belief that we work in a place where there is no room for faith intolerance, racism, sexism, bullying or other forms of persecution. For you worked as a team here, whereby you brought into further view your existing values of courage , discipline, a commitment you had that was selfless and a sense of loyalty and esteem for each other. You have thus learnt that these qualities and values are essential in terms of looking out for each other on the battle front, and in times of crisis you would endeavour to do your utmost to carry out the corrective measure to attain the set objective!", Dutta paused briefly and folded his knuckle and felt the side of mouth, and then parted his lips once again to continue with his speech ,in his clear firm deep throaty voice, "you also learnt in your stay at the school that the standards set here applied to all personnel working here according to rank order, from the junior most to the senior most. Professionalism, and aptness of behaviour with clear guidelines prompted by the law was in practice at all times, so it is hoped that you will continue to progress forward in the same spirit of professionalism that you were subjected to during your stay at the Military college. As your Infantry combat tutor I wish you well for your future." Dutta concluded and he walked away from the dais and leaned to whisper to Parekh that the final section, the passing out parade was about to begin. Parekh stood up and looked up into Dutta's eyes, "fine speech Major, one regret though , your two ladies should have been here to see their soldier aye, Dutta!, winked Parekh, and Dutta yanked his capped head a little to the side, "I don't think so Sir, as both of them would be sitting in the audience , sniffling and snuffling!", responded Dutta as he followed Parekh back to the dais.
The music sounded as the spectators perked up in their seats with cameras posed. From round the corner of the seating area to the peals of bagpipes from the elaborately tartan clad army band appeared as they played a known national theme. Behind them rode four individual horses, mounted by the four mounted flag bearers ,Bhatnager, Subramanium, Gavde, and Kapur, each upholding the regimental flags of the school in white flag pouches tied to their waists. Followed at a distance rode Khan mounted on a white horse with her sword up right before her firm face. Finally behind her step marched the remaining Outs with sided bayonet rifles in matched precision their left hands in automated motion swung back and forth to every step march they took, every left toe pointed forward as the right caught up. Spectators clapped and cheered as Dutta watched them step marched past the dais and alongside Parekh, Dutta clicked his heels and saluted. Flash photography prevailed as the spectators watched the sword of honour, horse and rider with upheld sword move towards the twin arched doors of the academic wing , mount the steps of the of the academic wing of the Military School as the officers followed the trail and emerged down the steps of the other arched exit. As soon as the horse and rider touched the parade ground there was a loud crescendo of fanfare and to the thunderous boom of band drums the new officers pulled off their caps and tossed them up in the air. Dutta smiled as it signalled the end of the ceremony. Relatives of the officers moved towards their loved ones and embraces and hugs became the need and order of the hour! the place was a picture of celebration and junior officers , reminded families and officers to attend the informal lunch set up for officers and their families.
Dutta and Parekh milled in with the visitors. Dutta dabbed his mouth from one side as he sat beside other senior officers, when suddenly he was tapped gently on his shoulder. He cranked his neck slightly and stood up as he beheld Khan's mamma jee standing before him with folded hands. Dutta removed his cap and joined his hands as well, "kaise hain ap mamma jee? bahut kushi hoi ka ap ah sake parade ke waste, ap ka bahut bara haat hai apne beta ke sapalta mein"praised Dutta. and turned to Parekh, "Sir this is Khan's mamma jee,"the two men exchanged namastes, and mamma jee felt he had to thank Dutta, "woh kya hai na Major Saheeb, ye tu sab Wasim ke wajah se hoya hai yehe mujhe lae ke ayea hai", Dutta turned and shook hands with Khan's fiance as she looked on shyly , mamma jee continued, "woh kya hai Major saheeb ap ka sukhriya kerna tha aur ap ka bhi brigadier saab , ju ap na meri baachi ka itna kahyal rakha..he said gratefully. Dutta held his hands together in embarrassment and turned towards Khan and suggested, "officer Khan please ensure that your guests have eaten properly and then go out with your family and just have a good time", he said as he looked at Wasim.. soon after the lunch was over, promoted 2nd lieutenants went out with their friends and family to enjoy the rest of the day and the passing out parade came to a befitting conclusion .
Parekh looked at Dutta and suggested, "coming to the bar for a drink Dutta?, "sure Sir I could do with one" replied a keen Dutta and both men grabbed their caps and headed towards the officers mess bar. Parekh looked sideways at his finest Officer,"just wanted to say Dutta you did a swell job today Major, not a single fault, so tell what do you plan to do now? queried Dutta .Dutta sipped his whiskey from this glass and replied, "I haven't given it much thought, depends Sir on what duty you want me to carry out before I leave for UK at the end of July", Parekh straightened up and peered authoritatively at Dutta, "well my boy I order you to take some time off from the School, and go spend it with your family, ah and no if's and buts! just do it thats' an order Major!, Dutta smiled, "well Sir if you insist, I guess, I could take a short break ,but please Sir,if I could emphasize that you will call me if you need me ..."Parekh stood up and placed his hand on Dutta's shoulder, "just do it Dutta! aaand switch off for a bit for heaven's sake! rasped Parekh, slid his hand off Dutta's jacketed shoulder picked his cap from the bar counter and left. Dutta looked at his senior officer as he left the bar, and soon after took his dress cap and tucked it in his armpit and walked out of the bar... to be continued Hamlet53 24.6.12.
