Chapter 42: Repercussions ā Part 2
"I imagine you already know this, but Khushi has resigned. This means that you will have to take over as project manager for the Mohan Industries case. Unless you plan on following her route and quitting with little notice, that is..."
He turned around from where he was standing by the window and looked at Rajeev who was seated on one of the chairs at the other end of the table. If the man was surprised at the news delivered to him first thing in the morning, then he gave no indication, although he did answer the second part of the question. "I don't plan on quitting in the foreseeable future. If I do have any such thoughts, I will give you the appropriate notice, of course. Do you plan on assigning another project lead? Or will it just be me?"
He took stock of the man's response as he answered, "I think you are more than capable of handling the project by yourself. The volume of work would have been too much for Khushi and she is not exactly good at asking for help, which is the reason why I assigned you as well. You were a good team, but I imagine that you can take over with no problem."
Rajeev merely shrugged before he got up from his seat. "If that will be all, sir?"
He was surprised. For the past two years, he had known that Rajeev was severely underemployed here and he had been waiting for the day when the man would put in his notice. He often wondered why he didn't.
"Can I ask you why you are still here?" he asked on impulse. Khushi quitting had sort of brought that home to him. He had lost one of his most hard-working project leads because he hadn't been able to think with his bigger brain. That was a loss that he had to absorb and he would. He was made of sterner stuff. The loss of one employee wouldn't kill him; if it did, then he didn't deserve to be the owner of anything in the first place. But it also made him reassess the value of his other staff. He couldn't really afford to lose someone like Rajeev at just this moment, but he also had to be prepared for it if and when the man decided to move on. Finding his motivation for sticking it out here thus seemed imperative at that moment.
"I don't catch your meaning." Rajeev said now.
"You have been ready to move on from your position for the past two years. And yet you are still here. May I ask why?"
"No."
"No?" Arnav asked in surprise.
"No." Rajeev repeated. "Like I said, sir, if I have any plans on making an imminent departure, I will let give you at least a month's notice. As I don't, my reasons for continuing in this company and in this position are my reasons alone; nothing that I wish to share."
"I see..." he answered. The man certainly never lacked for guts, although even when he was stating his mind, he was the height of all that was decent. It was annoying. Particularly because he himself had never had that level of control.
"I imagine I could learn a thing or two from you." He said out loud, just to see the man's reaction.
"Sir?" Rajeev asked.
"You never cross the line even in the most dire of circumstances, Rajeev. I imagine there's something to be learned from it." he answered. It was the most that he was willing to admit in light of the events of the weekend past.
"My only relation with you is that of an employer-employee, sir. If I were to judge your actions by any other merit, I would be crossing into the personal, which I am certain that I don't want to do."
Ah, a put-down. That rankled. And it made him want to strike back and he did.
"It appears that you and Vaibhavi have some history from your time in the U.S. I have not asked her about it, neither has she shared willingly. But I will tell you this. Any matters regarding her, I consider personal. And by your own admission, you do not want to cross into the personal with me. I take it that you understand my point?"
"Quite clearly." Rajeev answered. This time he did not request to take his leave before he walked out of the room.
The man had no discernible reaction to his girlfriend's resignation, but evidently his feathers were just a tad bit ruffled when V's name came up. He had a f**king weakness after all.
