Hey ani, once again a wonderful write up!
To, me the decision of hiding naku's true identity behind an ugly mask has always been an example of "cruelty", untill I got a chance to conduct a literacy workshop in the slum areas (an initiative by our college, and participation was mandatory). It was shocking to find that mothers of young girls lock (sometimes even forcefully)their daughters in the home, (with no proper ventilation), for the whole day while they are at work, when asked why, they replied it's the only option for them to protect their daughters from evil eyes. It was then I realized that babi or many women like babi do have a point, a reason which might be valid in the circumstance in which they are forced to live, and I with my sheltered life style don't have the right to have a judgmental approach about it.
But yes, later when she convinced naku to keep hiding her face from her husband until they re marry is certainly unacceptable, as a mother may be you have a right to make decisions about your child's life, but even "being a mother" doesn't provides you with the facility to influence your child's marital life decisions. I don't know, quite possible it's bcoz of my irritation towards mahle clan, I'm assuming, but I felt that later she became so habitual of the comfort which naku's "ugly mask" brought to her, that she kind of preferred delay in the FR, not really wanting to stand up and face the consequences. And also, her lack of trust in dutta, was unjustifiable to me, you can go to baaji and share your problems, regarding this soot issue, but not with that man, who saved your family, provided them shelter and livelihood, and choose to love and respect your daughter's golden heart, instead of pondering about her ugly face! Wow! It was like throughout her life she justified her "soot putting" gesture blaming the men community and it was hard for her to accept that there lives a man completely opposite to her "definition of man"!!. No mother will advise her daughter to start her marriage with a lie, babi did, infact to an extent forced, for me it's wrong and will ever remain unjustifiable. Yet, I can't over look the fact that how fierce she became when it comes to protecting her children, or how, with not even modest lifestyle, she always made sure that her children gets a high moral upbringing.
As far as development of her charcter is concerned, the whole first month of the show was dedicated to babi and her struggle to protect her daughter, but once they entered dutta's domain she really hadn't much to do, but since she had a lion's share in terms of screen space for the initial one month of the show, may be Cvs found it little "out of the way" to cut short her screen space all of a sudden, and hence prescribed unnecessary "rona dhona" for her which kind to harmed her character.
The moment patil clan was introduced MR, VR, AG kind of dominated the show, even Swati ji, with her pleasant aura gave tight competition to her. Claearly the audience preferred them more !
