So, it's neither Richa Gangopadhay nor Charmee who'll bring to life yesteryear actress Silk Smitha in Mollywood. Modelturned-actress Sana Khan, best known for her role as Janu opposite Simbu in Silambattam, will play Silk Smitha in Mollywood in the film Profile, a biopic of the yesteryear actress penned by Antony Eastman, who introduced Silk to the Malayalam film industry.
The makers say that the film is in no way similar to The Dirty Picture (TDP); so, Sana won't exactly be reprising the role of Vidya Balan in what went on to be one of the most critically-acclaimed and commercial blockbusters of recent times. Anil, director of Profile, had earlier reasoned with us as to why he had to look out of the industry to zero in on an actress to play Silk Smitha. "That Vidya Balan scaled new heights in her career with her role as Silk in TDP doesn't give our heroines the courage to take up the role of Silk. That is why we had to look beyond the industry for an actress to essay the role of one of the most-talked about actors in the industry, even years after her death," he said, adding, "I've worked with Silk in just one film — in a song sequence for my film Sakshal Sreeman Chathunni. She came across as a bold woman, who had no inhibitions about speaking her mind. The fact that Antony Eastman, with whom the actress had a long association, is penning the story of Profile ensures that the film will be a true story of Silk, unlike TDP."
Profile will also have actors Nishan, Baburaj, Suresh Krishna and Rajasri Nair, besides directors Viji Thampy and Thampi Kannanthanam. The film is set to start rolling by the second week of July.
