Actress Rekha makes singing debut with the Mohd Rafi ghazal 'Din dhal jaye'

When Rekha finally decided to air her singing talent, it was for the comedy Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana in which she plays the lead. The actress has sung Mohd Rafi ghazal â 'Din dhal jaye' (Guide) for the film.
Tell her about the resemblance her voice bears to Geeta Dutt's and she says, "Funny, you say that! My sister says I could well be Geeta Dutt's sibling. I've never trained to be singer. You're just being kind."
The actress does not think highly about her singing talent. "I've such a terrible singing voice. I'm not a singer. I think a lot of actresses sing very well. Tabu sings beautifully. And have you heard Madhuri Dixit sing? She has an amazing voice," she says. "I don't sing the words. I feel them. Shailendra saab's words in 'Din dhal jaye' are so emotion packed that it's easy for any sensitive person to drown in them. My rule while singing is the same as it is for livingâŚI feel life. Feelings last forever," she says.
Why did she choose this particular ghazal composed by Sachin Dev Burman? "I didn't really choose the song. I was just humming it on the sets one day when director Amar Bhutala overheard me and requested me to sing in the film," says Rekha. "I protested because there was no relevant situation for the song. But he insisted that a situation would be created. The song is played when my screen-husband and I make up. I asked my director not to retain the original orchestration, because all the weaknesses in my voice show up with more clarity. I recorded it on the computer and sent it over. Now when I hear it I just want to drown myself."
She reveals further, "Believe me, I just sat on the computer and gave a scratch recording to my director. I was sure of one thing. I didn't want to sing it like Rafi saab. No one can sing it like himâŚexcept Lata didi who has sung the song so beautifully (in the album Shraddhanjali). It was surreal âŚlike most things I've done in my life. It wasn't as if I voluntarily sat down to sing. It just happened."
When you ask her how she managed to render such intricate notes, Rekha says, "That's what Simiji had said when I sang on her show Rendezvous. She couldn't believe I could scale those high notes which Lataji did in 'Yeh kahan aa gaye hum (Silsila)."
Is she satisfied with her singing? "The day I'm satisfied with what I do, I will die. I'll never be content either. But I'm grateful for every slap and painful failure I have had to endure. I've put them all behind me. There should be no question marks only exclamation marks in life."
Besides singing, Rekha has two releases coming up this year â Goutam Ghose's Yatra and the comedy Kudiyon Ka Zamana. "Both the films are very different. I like to take up roles as a challenge, like I did the old woman's role in Krrish. I haven't seen the film since I have been travelling. But I'm happy to know it's a huge success," she says.
