The first Oak Tree Shopping Festival, developed by Touchdown Media Inc. in conjunction with Star India Plus and Life OK, was held May 26-27.
The mission of the festival was to re-establish Oak Tree as the premier South Asian shopping destination and to boost local businesses by bringing all that Oak Tree has to offer to the forefront, said a press release.
Woodbridge Mayor John E. McCormac opened the festival to the public, along with several stars from the Indian television industry, including actor Vishal Singh (Jigar of "Saath Nibhaana Saathiya") and actress Pooja Ghor (Pratigya of "Mann Ki Awaaz – Pratigya").
"We always work with downtown businesses to help them succeed. We congratulate Star Plus, Verizon, Touchdown Media and the merchants participating in the Oak Tree Shopping Festival," said McCormac after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Singh and Ghor participated in a meet-and-greet with screaming fans in addition to shopping at their favorite local stores.
A surprise visit from popular Canadian singer Raghav added to the excitement of fans at the festival.
"Unlike a carnival, this even was created to bring value to consumers as well as merchants on this bustling strip. The idea was to have a weekend of great shopping without any distractions. We are very encouraged by the fantastic response we've received from the community and hope to be able to do this annually," said Rahul Wali, founder of the Oak Tree Shopping Festival and CEO, Touchdown Media Inc.
Featuring deep discounts and special deals at Oak Tree Road's finest shops and restaurants, the festival drew families from the East Coast of the United States and beyond. Merchants offered discounts anywhere from 30 percent to an unprecedented 70 percent on clothes, jewelry, fashion wear, along with a unique promotion on food; a Restaurant Weekend with varied specials for the multitude of shoppers. Restaurants offered free eats with a loyalty card and salons offered free services.
The festival helped boost sales, brought in new faces and spread the word about our street," said Rahul Nayar of Sona Jewelers, which participated in the promotion.
Renowned restaurateur Dilip Mehta of the Dimple and Khasiyat chain said, "This has been a great effort and I always appreciate somebody's effort. I will support it every year."
"Business was better than before and we should make this an annual event so everyone can plan to visit our street," said Jitendru Gadoya, owner of Kiran Boutique and Hakoba Sarees.
"This event reiterates Star Network's commitment to the local community, i.e. our viewers. It is also our way of expressing gratitude to small business advertisers who have brought tremendous value to the general entertainment space owing to their support. We have been an integral part of such events in other countries and are pleased to nurture the growth of this new initiative in the U.S.," said Rajan Singh, executive vice president – international business, Star Network.
