Chapter 4:
"Someone might think that you and I are having an affair now officer," Geet said ignoring the man who was walking in step with her. "Please go away," she added stopping suddenly. "Thanks to you I got cornered by Maan Singh Khurana yesterday," she said haltingly.
The man, ACP Satya who was following her, was taken aback.
"What did he say?" He asked surprise evident in his voice.
"He wanted to know what you wanted," she replied hands on her hips. "And since he thinks entire world is conspiring against him and plotting his kill, he snooped through my house had me followed and finally confronted me after work yesterday. He managed to scare the hell out of me," she ranted. "And that's why please go away and don't bother me again," she turned and took off without bothering to hear his reply.
He wasn't a cop for naught. He jogged after her and caught up with her within seconds.
"Why did he think I walk talking to you about him in the first place? And it's quite interesting that he took personal interest in you and came after you on his own. He never does that," Satya looked thoughtful.
"He sent people to my house, checked out what newspaper I read and he even knew what channels on television I watch. I am sure he also knows what size my underwear is but was gentleman enough not to tell that on my face," she replied angrily.
"But I was only asking you about Varun and not him." Satya tried negotiating.
"Yeah, about that. I don't know anything about Varun. I am not the right person to talk to you about him as I am not privy to his personal life. God! How many times should I tell you this?" She was really angry now. She hadn't slept the previous night or early morning as she was sitting in the dark of her tiny apartment with a gun in her hands. She dozed off a little when she heard the newspaper hit her front door.
"Look, all I want to know is where the meeting between Maan and Varun is held?" Satya was adamant to get that information out of her.
"I don't get this officer," she said as she saw Skoda around the curb. "You are an ACP which I am given to understand is a pretty senior post isn't it? If so then why are you on the street like this asking for information which even a constable can easily acquire," she asked him looking straight in his eye. If Satya was unnerved by her directness, he didn't show.
"I am a police officer Ms. Geet and I am just doing my job." Satya said flatly. Her profession allowed Geet to learn about people and their lying ways very quickly and her naturally good observant skills accentuated it further. "Find out where the two of them are meeting. You will be doing this country a huge favor," Satya said.
"This country first needs to fix its basic infrastructure ACP Satya and you should be investigating why people aren't safe in their homes or streets anymore. It is utterly ridiculous to blame underworld for everything that is wrong with the society; the underbelly always reflects the darkest psyche of the society sir. This world exists because they do," she said darkly.
Satya didn't respond. She had simplified a complex equation to suit her perspective. Frankly he didn't care as far as he got his job done. He didn't care too much about sociological implications and things like that.
"Why are they meeting?" Geet asked. "And just follow me like you are pestering me or something. You have two minutes," she said and walking briskly.
"Varun Deshmukh is desperate to become the heir of Deshmukh Empire and the heat is on him since senior Deshmukh's illegitimate older son, Vikram, is gearing up for competition. Varun knows that Vikram isn't going to let this go because he respects their father and has been part of this business for a while," Satya said.
"Everyone is assuming that Varun is going to inherit the business. Damodar Deshmukh never really got out of his comfort zone ' which is art and drugs. His target geography has been Europe; he has been able to smuggle out art to Europe but not drugs."
"That's because the cartel in Europe has been infiltrated by Mexicans and it is getting more and more difficult for Deshmukh to find a footing there," Geet finished. Satya looked at the taut form of her walking in front of her briskly.
"You seem to know a lot about these things," he said surprised.
"Don't waste your time with unnecessary statements officer. I work in a bar where all top officials and workers of Deshmukh company come in. I hear a lot of things. That along with few news reports is enough for me to arrive at a logical conclusion."
"Deshmukh has the European supply chain but he isn't able to push his supply in that route because of the competition by Mexican cartels. However Maan has his goods supplied to northern parts of Africa and south Europe. Deshmukh wants to utilize that network," Satya said.
They had arrived in front of Skoda.
"I'll see what I can do," she said softly only for him to hear. She saw the bouncers back at front door and were scattered over the front portion of the property. Staff was already coming in as it was an open bar night and also an early one. "Stop harassing me you jackass and stay the hell away from me!" She screamed at him for good measure and ran inside. She hoped she put on a show for the audience. If they knew what the conversation was about, they would tear her to pieces or sell her off to a place from where there would be no escape.
