Collateral

Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin and It Happened One Night, Murder and Unfaithful, Jism and Double Indemnity — all these films ran into controversy for sharing structural similarities.

And The Killer starring Emraan Hashmi, Irrfan Khan and Nisha Kothari — the latest offering from Vishesh Films - has been inspired from the Tom Cruise-starrer Collateral.

However, the Bhatts prefers to be open about it. Says Mahesh Bhatt, "There is no denying the fact that there are structural similarities — a cab driver, a henchman and a night.

The Killer has Indian ethos, a Dubai flavour, a bar dancer and a tale of love. My writer Sanjay Masoom hails from the heartland of India and he has ensured the Indian sentiments in the film."

Comic relief

We hear that the actors were barred from viewing the Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx thriller out of fear that the desi actors might adopt similar body language.

Says Irrfan Khan, "I haven't seen Collateral but I have heard that it's based on it. When Bhatt saab first approached me for a role, he had told me Killer ki kahani kuch Collateral ki aaspaas hai but I didn't want to see the film. I just asked for a story narration and when I heard about my character I said yes. I play a lean, mean, interesting killer."

So what's different? Emraan Hashmi informs, "There is a comic element in Killer which is not there in Collateral."

Destination unknown

Emraan Hashmi plays a cab driver, Nikhil, who wants to earn a lot of money in as little time as possible.

His life takes a turn for the worse with the entry of a contract killer Vikram (Irrfan Khan). What happens when Vikram meets Nikhil and hijacks his cab for 24 hours?

Nikhil turns out to be the chosen one, and has to assist Vikram in driving him around town to his next destination. Only thing is, none of the people Vikram is going to meet make it out alive. The Killer releases on July 21.
