Tezz
By Taran Adarsh, 25 Apr 2012, 22:00 hrs IST
Riveting action movies are a rarity in Bollywood. Action movies that stand out come along once every few years. TEZZ, helmed by Priyadarshan, is one of them.

The story of TEZZ is uncomplicated… A team of Asians place a bomb on a high-speed train. The authorities receive an anonymous threat that a triggered bomb has been planted on a bullet train operating between London and Glasgow. If the train decelerates or loses speed below a certain tempo, it will be destroyed along with its many passengers, unless a ransom is paid. The police want to stop the bombs from exploding, while the railway authorities want to save the lives of the passengers and they soon find themselves in a disagreement under the frantic pace set by these dramatic circumstances.

Does the plot sound familiar? Yes, I am sure, it sounds recognizable. But a vital clarification, before I proceed further. It's widely discussed that TEZZ is generously inspired or a replica of the 1994 Keanu Reeves starrer SPEED. It's also said that SPEED was a recreation of the Japanese thriller SHIKANSEN DAIBAKUHA [1975], which was also known as THE BULLET TRAIN. Reportedly, even the Thai film industry got inspired by the Japanese movie in 1977 and made a movie called 1 2 3 MONSTER EXPRESS. While the Japanese movie had the plot set on a high-speed train, SPEED was on board a bus. Without giving the plot away, I'd like to say that TEZZ does seek inspiration from the above-mentioned films, but is no replica or a duplication of the above-mentioned movies.

TEZZ is a good looking thriller filmed with expertise. Loaded with an ingenious premise, thrilling moments and action, Priyadarshan has curved it into a tremendously well-executed motion picture. The film's sole objective is to keep moving at a feverish pace, keeping the spectator completely immersed and entertained with the on-screen occurrences. Sure, there are some unwarranted moments [more on that later!], but the pacing is so breakneck and the cinematography so superior that it's easy to overlook the few unreasonable moments.

Shot across England with action sequences like none other, one scarcely pauses to take a breath. If you've ever travelled on the lightning fast bullet train, you know how terrifying the thought of an accident is. If you enjoy panic movies with ultimate action and edgy thriller suspense, then TEZZ should do the trick for you.

On the flip side, the back story of Zayed and Sameera vis--vis their camaraderie and solidarity with Ajay could have been more persuasive and better elucidated for a stronger impact. Only then would the episodes involving Zayed and Sameera and what prompts them to risk their lives to support Ajay in implementing his plans appear compelling. Similarly, the portions involving Ajay and Kangna, towards the latter half, appear synthetic. The eagerness and zest of a couple uniting after five years is evidently amiss. Ditto for the final moments. The hand to hand combat scenes between Anil and Ajay adds value, but appear unwarranted and only stretch the narrative inanely. Besides, the visual effects could have been a wee bit superior.

But these are trifling discolorations. The plus points effortlessly prevail over and outnumber the deficiencies here. Though there are ample thrilling moments in the enterprise, I'd like to single out two chase sequences that are simply outstanding -- the first involving Sameera and the second featuring Zayed. Besides, the film lives up to its title, with the plot unraveling at a feverish pace. Last but not the least, the performances by the principal cast is a big plus.

Action choreographers Gareth Milne and Peter Pedrero, who previously worked on several international films, pool resources with Priyadarshan for high-quality action on screen. They do a remarkable job. Tirru's cinematography deserves special mention. This must've been an intricate film to shoot, but the outcome is at par with any international film. The car stunts, the chase sequences and of course, the sequences in a moving train are filmed with precision. Sajid-Wajid's musical score is satisfactory. The Mallika Sherawat track at the very outset sets the ball rolling, while the romantic track between Ajay and Kangna is smartly interwoven in the narrative.

It's a treat watching Anil Kapoor on screen. Though the actor has been an integral part of so many movies in the past, you can never accuse him of repeating himself. Besides, he may be in his early 50s, but that hasn't deterred Anil from performing the high-octane action stunts with flourish. Ajay Devgn excels yet again. The actor has the perfect demeanor, attitude and physical appearance for the character he portrays. Also, those who felt that Ajay had cut down on action roles of late are in for a treat. Ajay's character has an emotional side, but it's the action portions, which he handles like a complete pro, that makes his character even more appealing.

Kangna is an integral part of the film, but the screen time is limited. Nonetheless, her sequence with Anil towards the final moments catches your attention. Zayed doesn't get ample scope, but he's fantastic in the chase sequence towards the second hour. Sameera gets to do some daredevil stunts and also gets a couple of interesting sequences to leave a mark and she clutches the opportunity with both the hands. Mohanlal, an actor par excellence, gets minimal scope. Boman Irani is fantastic. One can easily rate it amongst his best works. Mallika Sherawat sizzles in the 'Laila' track.

On the whole, TEZZ is a taut, entertaining action spectacle. Those with an appetite for well-made thrillers should lap it up!

The cinematography of this movie is different. esp. the print. It seems as if I am watching a Holly-flick.

After entertaining people with comedy capers like "Hera Pheri" and "Bhool Bhulaiya", filmmaker Priyadarshan is set to regale audiences with some high octane stunts in his forthcoming multi-starrer Tezz.

Made on a budget of approximately Rs.40 crore, the film features an ensemble cast of Anil Kapoor, Zayed Khan, Ajay Devgan, Kangana Ranaut,Sameera Reddy, Boman Irani with southern superstar Mohanlal in a cameo.

Anil returns to Priyadarshan's direction 15 years after Viraasat.

It is the also the first time that Zayed is teaming up with Priyadarshan and the actor admits the veteran is a tough task master.

"Tezz" is the story two men - Aakash Rana (Ajay Devgan) and Arjun Khanna (Anil Kapoor). One is out to get back what was taken away from him in an unjust way, and the other is willing to do whatever it takes to stop him in order to serve justice.

Sameera, Ajay and Zayed play illegal immigrants in Britain. The film shows how they turn against the authorities who try to deport Ajay and plant a bomb on a train speeding between Glasgow and London.

The film has been extensively shot in Glasgow, Strathclyde, Perth and Kinross, Southall in Middlesex and St. Pancras in London.

Priyadarshan hired Hollywood action choreographer Peter Pedrero to write and direct the action sequences. Pedrero has worked for films like "Braveheart", "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "The Bank Job". So no wonder it should be a treat for viewers with a thirst for some good action.

Actress Mallika Sherawat has done an item number "Laila" in the film. There were reports that Sameera was miffed with the producer, Ratan Jain, for offering the item number, earlier reserved for her, to Mallika.

However, the producer denied this, saying that the issue was over-hyped. Sameera Reddy later clarified that she wasn't supposed to do the song.

Sameera would be seen doing some amazing stunts in the film and the actress admits doing action was not an easy thing and wasn't even prepared for it.

Even Anil Kapoor, 52, performed some parkour sequences all by himself.

The promos of the film have created quite a buzz with their fast-paced sequences and people are eagerly looking forward to the release of the film, which promises to keep the audiences on the edge of their theatre seats.

The Avengers Set To Give Tezz Tough Fight

Thursday 26th April 2012 11.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The last few years has seen Hollywood films take better openings when they clashed with medium/small budget Hindi films but this week may be the first time that a Hollywood release gives a tough fight to a big Hindi film release.

Tezz is not an event Hindi film but considering its releasing on twice the number of screens as that of The Avengers it should come out on top comfortably but that may not be the case.

The early advance booking at multiplexes indicate that The Avengers will be first choice at many multiplexes especially the ones showing the film in 3D format and this will affect Tezz collections.

Tezz should still come out with higher first day collections due to the screen count but may not be at the level expected from a big film while The Avengers looks set for better occupancies than Tezz on day one.

In the Nizam circuit both The Avengers and Tezz will be hit by Telugu film Dammu which has a taken a huge advance in the that circuit.

Tezz review: a treat to watch say viewers

Posted by Amina Gupta on April 26, 2012 in Bollywood, Entertainment |

Viewers rating of Tezz: ***

From the trailers, we could make out Tezz is going to be an action packed movie, and the movie has not let its viewers down, not even for a second. With its fast pace sequences, well knitted plot and good direction, the movie throughout, was able to keep the audiences on the edges of their seats. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film has a hoard of cast that includes Anil Kapoor, Zayed Khan, Ajay Devgn, Kangna Ranaut, Sameera Reddy and Boman Irani. It goes without saying that all of them have done justice to their roles.
Even though the plot of the movie is simple and has nothing new to offer, but good acting, direction and strong story line was more than enough to keep the viewers engaged. The plot of the movie revolves around two men Aakash Rana (Ajay Devgan) who wants to get back what was taken from him wrongly, and the other Arjun Khanna (Anil Kapoor) who will go to any extent in order to stop him. In the film, Sameera, Ajay and Zayed have played the role of illegal immigrants in Britain. The story revolves around how these illegal immigrants work against the authorities who try to deport Ajay and plant a bomb on a train speeding between Glasgow and London.

Tezz audience review: watch it for Ajay and Kangna

Rating: 3

Tezz, starring Ajay Devgan, Anil Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Zayed Khan and Sameera Reddy is one of the few action movies of Bollywood that are not released every now and then. In simple words, the movie holds the capacity to make an impact on the masses. Tezz will especially be enjoyed by all those who love to watch action and are looking for a good thriller film.
Holding true to its name, Tezz, has a fast moving plot that it leaves the viewer completely immersed. Director Priyadarshan has taken all care to give an inventive premise, thrilling moments and actions to keep the viewers engaged. The storyline of the movie is simple and all the action begins when it is revealed that a bomb has been placed on a bullet train operating between London and Glasgow. And, if the train decelerates it will be destroyed along with the passengers. Ajay Devgan and Anil Kapoor are a delight to watch on screen. Kangna too has played her part loyally as she is an integral part of the movie. Similarly, Zayed Khan and Sameera Reddy have performed their best but there screen time is limited. In a nutshell, we can say that Tezz is a well made and entertaining action flick which will lure action theatres to Cineplex's.

Tezz Has Dull Opening At Multiplexes

Friday 27th April 2012 11.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Tezz opened to dull response at multiplexes across the country. The average collections were around 25% with some multiplexes even as low as 10-15%. The opening was not expected to be great but also not as low as it has turned out to be. The film had face value and action but the audience has just not turned up on its first day.

The film has been released on around 2000 screens so potential to collect is there but will need a very fast turnaround in collections.

The single screen opening may be a bit better but is unlikely to be big enough to make much of a difference. The fate of the film is dependent on word of mouth but early indications are that even public reports are not encouraging.
