Her Most Awaited Answer
"Let's go." He raised his eyes to her, questioning. "Where?"
"Your house!" The stress on your didn't go unnoticed by him.
"But..you wanted to stay for few days?" uncertainty is not something he accustomed of. But since yesterday he felt nothing but that from his young wife's behavior.
"It doesn't matter, anyway you don't have to spend few more days in this third class place!" she curtly replied and before he even utter a word she was already outside the room with bags in her hand.
He couldn't do anything but watching his wife assembling all their things at the hall way of Buaji's house rising suspicion of both her Amma and Buaji. "Bitiya," Garima called her softy. He was shocked from the change in her expression now, gone the blank look she had since yesterday, her face brightened plastered with smile. But her eyes..they gave away everything that she was trying to stage. Her fake chirpiness. He noticed them straight away. How could he not be aware of all these before? Or did he notice and ignore it because of his own mule-headiness.
"Amma, we need to return. He has some urgent meeting out of town," she lied. Amma and Buaji frowned little but she didn't give them a chance to ponder further. She hugged both of them by shoulder, "I promise next time we will stay longer. You know what.. I will drag jiji and jiju together. We will stay until you chase us out ok?" she laughed little. Buaji slapped her arm softly, scolding.
"Titalya, damadji has work but you can stay few days na. Haaa..I know. Apne pati ke bina reh nai sakti haina?" Buaji teased. She smiled little, he died thousand deaths, looking at the pain in her eyes.
Husband..if only these people knew. Well that is something to worry after three months. It is going to be hell break loose, this time nothing could be done to ease their anger, she will leave. She will leave them all.
"Arnav bitwa, everything ok? Sorry, we can't..I mean you are not comfortable here..and.." he stopped Garima midway, "No, aunty. Nothing like that. I would love to spend time here again, Khushi is right next time we all will come, Payal and Akash..and Khushi.." her name came so softly from his mouth, he gazed upon her.
Realization dawned, she didn't correct him when he called her Amma, aunty. After two days bugging him with, Amma kahiye na, whenever he called Garima aunty, today she didn't bother. She withdrew. He realized, cold sweat adorned his forehead. She is withdrawing, taking back little by little of everything she has been offering him. She doesn't bother anymore!
He settled all their thing in his SUV's boot, she handed over the little plant pot she brought for him, incase he misses his plants she said. Ever thoughtful, ever caring, his Khushi. Damn his brain. He took the pot from her. She hurried to her Amma and Buaji, hugged them tightly. They chided that she was behaving as if they are not going to meet each other again, after all they stay in same city, to which she just smiled little. Something in her bearing caught him, he realized she was not biding them an usual goodbye, it was more like a permanent farewell. Her tears when she held on her father as if wishing she could be his daughter forever and nothing else confirmed his doubt further. Then she moved away from them, gave them one long lasting look and got into his car. He was more clueless than he was before.
"Buaji..Amma if there is anything you need just tell me..for Bauji's treatment or anything don't hesitate just let me know. I will take care of everything." He found it was not that difficult to accept. Accepting that this is his family, his Amma, his Bauji..Buaji it was overwhelming. The woman who granted him this gift sat in his car oblivious, deep in thought. He wondered what was going in the pretty little head of her. The women cupped his face, ruffled his hair. Bauji smiled. He felt at home. He turned to the driver's seat and drove off. The silence was so eerie, she didn't even once look at him since last night. He couldn't decipher her thoughts.
"Why?" He turned to leave, "not today Arnavji! You have to tell me!" she held his arm. He turned sharply, looked at her "I have to?" he snorted incredulously, just who does she think she is?
He pulled his hand hard, little did he know that would be the last time she held his hand willingly, unwittingly he broke whatever emotional tie they have shared.
"Fine! I married you because I know about your relationship with Sham!" he spit it out harshly. She felt as if she was burning with fire, the venom in his words did it.
Silly her, still having hopes, calmly asked, "What relationship?"
The nerve of the woman, she can still pretend or may she is not...
"That you want him! You asked him to leave my Di..Arnav Singh Raizada's Di for you!" he shouted.
And that did it! She slumped on the floor like a sack, not looking at anything particularly, he saw her lips moving. "A low class woman..a gold digger who will do anything for money and now a home wrecker, a s**t who runs after married man. Why should I be surprised? This is not even close to how low he think of me..how cheap he think I am," he was not sure if she is talking to him or to herself, it was more like to herself until she raised her eyes to him and implored, "right?"
The look in her eyes, he was not sure anymore, whether he was right or wrong but being a smart business tycoon he knew he was in loss at that moment. He lost!
Suddenly with a remarkable strength she stood, walked out the room. He was shocked, is she not going to defend herself? He followed her.
"Amma..Buaji," she called them. He was in utter shock. What is she doing?
"Khushi..damn it..what are you doing?"
Khushi, ever calm, looked at the women. "Buaji, your damadji here wants to know how I met Shamji. Why don't both of you tell him while I go and feed Bauji his breakfast."
"Bitya..what are you saying?" Buaji and Garima couldn't hide the shock.
What do the whole family know?..what the..
"Don't worry, he already knows. He just want to know the whole detail. Who else can give a better description of what happened than you Buaji?Just tell him..I'll go to Bauji."
Buaji and Garima narrated the whole tale. Beginning from his video on Khushi released in Lucknow, the goons after her thinking her a woman of easy virtue. Sham's entry in saving her from them and how sweetly he offered them to shift to Delhi, finding her job in AR and finally staying in Buaji's place as paying guest as he claimed to be an orphan. If that was not enough, Garima continued how when Khushi's father fell sick he was there convinced everyone that Bauji wanted him to marry Khushi. Khushi declined, adamant the he was just a friend and nothing more but on Diwali night Bauji's health worsened and Buaji insisted Khushi to agree for the marriage if she had little of respect and love for the family. She agreed.
Diwali, he thought shutting his eyes. He didn't need to listen further. He knew what happened. Didn't she cry on his shoulder the day she met his jijaji for the first time? Didn't she tell him that she broke her engagement because her fiance cheated?
His fists clenched. "We wanted to tell you Babua but Khushi..she said your sister won't able to take it and we thought since we knew his real face, he wouldn't try to misbehave. He is reform now is he? With Anjali bitya being pregnant..he must why Garima?" Buaji asked and Garima just nodding her head approvingly.
"That is why we were very angry Babua when you and Khushi got married hastily, we were afraid for Khushi..to stay under the same roof with him. But Nandekishore if you know then you will take care of her," Buaji was so confident that he felt she might as well slapped him.
He didn't utter a word. Khushi came, turned the plate in front of him. "Breakfast.." she said. That was the moment, right there at Buaji's dining table Khushi refused to look at his eyes. He couldn't get even a small glimpse of her eyes on him. He ate, feeling utterly dumb for the first time in his life. She went on the whole day as if nothing happened. That night she slept turned on her side, he didn't bother to put the line in between them but he realized painfully the whole night she didn't move even an inch.
The car halted, she unbuckled her seat belt, opened the door. "You go first, I will come." He was not sure if she nodded or he imagined the gesture. He was so confused. He roamed the whole city not knowing what to do.
How I face her after this? What should I tell her?
Khushi answered the Raizada's questions with hundred excuses for being home early that at one point she couldn't even remember her own excuses. She went straight to his room. Hours later he returned, refused to eat but to stopped by his sister and served by Hariprakash.
Why didn't she serve him today? He didn't like it at all. He went straight to his room. He was taken back at the sight awaited him, his room was stark with his dark shades. He noticed straight away the chimney was removed, gone the stars, her pink bed sheet replaced with his brown to the whole bed, the poster gone..her colours gone and his room looked as it was before three months. He went to his closet to find her clothes removed. He panicked, looked around relieved she was still there. Clad in her night suit, her hair braided, she didn't look at him still. He needed to get a reaction from her, not mere reaction but Kushi kind of reaction. So he did what he does best, in his full-fledged ASR mode he called her, "Khushi Kumari Gupta!" expecting her to add Singh Raizada but she didn't, his heart plummeted.
"What happened to this room?"
"I removed my belongings. It was never my intention to share this room as your wife, if not anything from the moment I met you I learnt my aukat very well. After numerous classes you took on that subject I wouldn't even dare to even think myself aligned with you. I was just trying to annoy you..I wanted answer for whatever happened..the marriage..so I did all that you hate so that you would loose your temper, annoyed at me and give the answer I needed or send me back home. And now I know everything, not to say your wife I am not even a guest in this house. A prisoner is not entitled for all these luxury. I have no rights to share anything in this room or demand anything from you. Don't worry I won't leave now..I love Anjaliji as much as I love my jiji. I will not ever bother you in anyway with my presence and I promise I will keep the facade intact in front of the family. I will serve my punishment for the remaining 3 months and leave. I just need one favor from you, this time you handle their questions please I can't face them...tell them anything..blame me. Tell them I ran away with someone else, another man, richer than you..anything you are good in creating a defamed image of me..who am I teaching?"
With that she took a pillow and laid on the floor, curled. He stood not knowing what to say but knew for sure he has done an irreparable damage this time! His eyes teared, he felt his heart just broke onto pieces. Arnav Singh Raizada has dug his own grave!
