His Princess's Cry

Khushi woke up somewhere after dawn, found herself cocooned in warmest embrace of the world. Her mind was still groggy with the heavy painkiller. She wasn't sure if he was really there or she was imagining him as she has been doing since he went for his business trip. She couldn't help herself from snuggling closer to him as if that was ever possible in her current position. She lifted her head slightly admiring his beautiful face. She has never seen a man with such beautiful face, he has such a prominent jaw and she loved his light stubble that gave a him a princely look, her prince..her rakhsas. She wanted so much to remove the hair that was adorning his forehead but she realized she couldn't lift her hands, they felt so numb. Slightly, she uplifted her body and kissed the corner of his mouth, ever softly. Feeling him tightening his arms around her waist, she brushed her cheek lightly on his chest, settled herself comfortably at the crook of his neck.

It was mid-afternoon before Khushi awakened, she spent half an hour stumbling around the room, trying to clear her mind of the effects of the powerful painkiller. The fact she was clad in only her blouse and petticoat confused her more. Who removed my saree? He was really here last night? If he was, why he is not here now?And my hands..they hurt like hell.

Before she continued her inner monologue more, there was a knock on the door. "Khushi are you awake?Shall I come in?" Payal asked softly, because Arnav has told her strictly that if Khushi didn't answer on the first knock, she has to let her sleep. And that too he gave in after Payal promised few times that she won't disturb Khushi if she was sleeping, she just wanted to check on her little sister. Khushi panicked for a second, looking for her saree but the moment she heard Payal's voice she calmed a bit, "Jiji..come in." Her voice sounded hoarse, from crying.

Payal opened the door and found Khushi stood in the middle of the room distraught and confused. Payal hurried to her, "My head spins.."

"It's the medicine. Come let me help you to shower and dress. You will feel better once you have eaten."

"Khushi..what happened yesterday? How did your hands get burnt?" Payal asked softly, brushing Khushi's hair.

"It was an accident Jiji, I didn't pay attention and knocked the frying pan down..that's all. Jiji..woh.." she wanted so much to ask Payal if her husband has returned but she stopped herself. Well if he was here he should have came and met her, if he is too busy she is not going to bother..hmpph.

"I'm hungry.." Payal laughed. They both went down together. She felt him before actually saw him. So he was there, real. Then why didn't he came to me. Laad Governer. She sulked. She found her husband surrounded by some of his acquaintances. His back was turned to her, the men were listening to him, attentively. Arnav noticed his employees were not paying attention to whatever he was saying anymore, they were looking somewhere beyond him. He planned to work from home for few days to be with Khushi, and was instructing some important orders to them. What the..what are they looking at? And he turned around. His gaze found her immediately of course. She was the most beautiful woman he have ever seen. Would he ever get used to her? Each time he saw, he became rattled by her appearance. She was wearing a deep blue saree, hell does she look bad in any color? Every color seems to be hers. Her hair shimmered like raven. She was wearing her hair the way he liked it, unbound and swinging loose around her shoulders. He saw her bandaged hands, his blood boiled. He needed to touch her, make sure she is fine. He had to take a deep breath to gain control of his thoughts noticed her accusing eyes and pouting lips.

What's wrong? He nodded and arrogantly motioned Khushi forward. She denied him by shaking her head at him. Payal looked uncomfortable and whispered something into Khushi's ear, telling her to go to him most probably. She shook her head again. What was her game now? She is angry but why? She was disobeying him. He almost laughed, but caught himself in time. He motioned her again. She was defiant, shook her head again. Even from the distance Khushi could see a muscle jerk in his cheek. His jaw was clenched tight. He was angry all aright. Although she worried over the look in his eyes, she refused to back down down. Devi Maiyaa, she is not his puppet to act to his whim whenever he pulls the string! Arnav folded his arms across his chest and continued to stare at her. There was only one alternative left, to leave the living hall. He would come after her and she could give him hell for being rude in front outsiders. She put her plan into action. She inclined her head to the guests a sign of welcoming, smiled at her husband. Then she turned and climbed a step forward.

"Khushi."

His voice boomed, vibrated. She came to a dead stop. She couldn't believe he'd bellowed her name in front of all the guests. She turned around, the men were staring at her, now the Raizada's joined them as well. She could feel her cheeks burning with embarrassment. The look in his eyes told her he would continue to create scene and not be embarrassed at all. She supposed she'd better let him have his way..this one time. She let out a sigh, slapped a serene expression and walked down the stairs. She kept her gaze directed to him. Then he started to move forward as well, dismissed his employees much to her surprise and met her at the foot of the staircase. The message was clear. She just needed to step forward and he would be there to meet her halfway and he won't have it any other way.

"How are you?"

"You aren't always going to get what you want," she whispered.

"Yes, I am." She saw the sparkle in his caramel brown eyes. He smiled. She didn't know what to make of that. She bowed her head. He forced her chin back up then he slowly leaned down and kissed her. His mouth only brushed her cheeks for a fleeting second, it still left her flustered.

She was just regaining her wits when he pulled her to his side, draped an arm around her shoulders "thanks Payal," he said to smiling Payal, who just nodded and left to the kitchen. Her walked back to his employees who by now were watching him, astounded at the very besotted ASR. He gave them few more orders, they listened obediently and left. His family has already seated for lunch.

"When did you return?" she didn't look at him.

"Look at me when you talk to me Khushi."

He waited until she looked at him. "I came yesterday. Don't you remember?"

She shook her head, "Then why you were not..I didn't..hmm..it's nothing."

"What is it? I was not.. what? Khushi, look at me sweetheart. Were you looking for me when you woke up? Did you miss me when I was away?"

She simply shook her head denying, avoiding his eyes again. He was not going to take that, tilted her chin again. Her doe eyes misted with unshed tears. She was feeling really vulnerable. He didn't give her a chance to think, moved closer, grabbed her waist kissed her so softly that her eyes welled up, tears rolled down her cheeks. "I promise I won't go anywhere, leaving you alone..ok jaan.." She just nodded.

He walked her to the dining table, seated her next to him. She remembered she was supposed to be angry at him, when she thought about the way he'd bellowed her name and arrogantly motioned for her to come for him, she started seething. It didn't take her any time at all to work herself into a fine state of fury. Then Arnav ruined it. He started rubbing the tension right out of her shoulders and arms in such a soothing way she couldn't help but snuggled up against him. "Do your hands still burn, Khushi?" he asked softly. The tenderness in his voice felt like a caress. She knew it probably wasn't proper to be pressed up against him in front of the whole family, but she was too weary to care, moreover Sham's words still ringing in her ears. If anything she wanted to show him she will never ever belong to him, yes whatever between she and her husband could be sorted out later. "They do sting little, Arnavji. It isn't unbearable. I'm fine." He held her closer, trying to soothe her pain. She liked that. She liked his scent, too. He smelled so clean, so masculine.

Payal walked with foods prepared and two more new male servants following her at behind, didn't go unnoticed by Khushi. Anjali noticed the bewildered look on Khushi, smiled teasingly, "Woh Khushi..Chote has hired few more servants to help in the house chores."

"Yes, Khushi. I told you not to overwork but you never listen and look at you now. You are not going to do any work from now on. If you want to cook one of them will help you. Understood?" he sounded angry, remembering what happened yesterday and how she cried in pain. Khushi was dumbstruck, didn't know what to say. May be he really cares. She was still looking at him when Akash voice interrupted her.

"Khushiji, we are very sorry. Bhai told us to take care of you and we were careless, sorry for what happened," Akash sounded so forlorn. Khushi noticed that everybody looked so gloomy and guilty. Must be her precious husband's doing. She glared at him fiercely before looked at her adorable jijaji "Jijaji..what is this? I was careless and spilt the oil. It was not anybody's fault why are you being sorry? Why everyone look so sad?" They didn't buy it and looked very down still.

"Jiji, I am hungry what have you cooked today? Shall we eat and if all of you don't start smiling now I will be very angry..like really angry," she tried to sound serious but failed miserably made every one cracked a small smile.

"Lets eat, I have cooked all your favorite food," Payal started to fill Khushi's plate.

"Khushiji, this is for you, so that you get well very soon," said Akash handing her a bouquet of gorgeous red roses. She squealed, suddenly excited, "jijaji, for me? This is so pretty! Thank you..you are the best jijaji in the world. Jiji..don't be jealous ok," she stuck her tongue to Payal who just shook her head. Akash beamed. Arnav smiled at her excitement, she was so happy and vibrant for such a simple thing and put the bouquet in front of her on the table.

"Eat first," he said, tearing a small piece of roti, dipped in the curry and fed her. She hesitated from a moment but the soft looks in his eyes undone her. She opened her mouth, allowing him. The food tasted so bland in her mouth, aftermath of the medicine she took. Her nose scrunched and she frowned, before Arnav questioned her, Sham entered from the kitchen with a plate of newly fried jalebis. "Khushiji, here I have made jalebis specially for you. Take a bite you will feel much better immediately," his voice sugar coated, irritating. Khushi didn't even look at him and mumbled, "It's ok jijaji, I don't feel like eating sweet. Thank you." Arnav moved his hand to her waist, beckoned her to turn, "Kya hua." She turned to look at him, "the food tastes bitter in my mouth, can I have something really spicy to eat?" He smiled, Payal suggested some Golgape and Khushi nodded exuberantly. Arnav called HP, gave him money to get her desired Golgapes. HP returned with lots of them. The pleasure in her face while consuming the Golgapes that he kept on feeding was such a delight to watch. Sham was fuming with anger, he decided he needed to do take some drastic step instantly, Khushi and Arnav seemed to be so into each other and they should be stopped before it's too late.

"Bus..enough." she said.

"Enough? sure?" he wiped her lips, she nodded. Then he took her tablets from Payal and gave her to eat them she swallowed and drank the water he offered. She gifted him on of her beautiful smiles and turned to pick one of the flowers in the bouquet up, then stopped, realizing she couldn't grasp anything with her bandaged hands. Arnav picked up a red bloom and held it under her nose. She inhaled the light, sweet fragrance, then nudged the flower toward Arnav. "It smells wonderful,"she announced. He inhaled the fragrance before tossing the flower back on the table. "You smell better," he said only for her to hear, she blushed red. She felt a bit drowsy, she leaned back on her chair relaxing, while he began to eat his lunch, vaguely she heard her husband's husky voice mingled with Akash's, they were discussing about work. In moment, Arnav felt her weight on his side, "must be the medicine," he told his family, in soft voice not to wake her. He moved to wipe his hand and that jerked her from sleep, she sat upright on her chair.

"Come, I'll take you to room, you should rest," before he stood, she shook her head, nudging him to sit back.

"No, you continue..I'll go with jiji," she smiled at Akash and stood. Arnav didn't want to argue with her when she looked so exhausted and fragile as she was then, so he helped her to stand, kissed her temple softly and thanked Payal who led her to their room. Khushi felt so tired suddenly, the burns were making her hand throb with pain, now, and her skin itched the painkillers has not kicked in yet she supposed. She removed her dupatta and took her phone with great difficulty, there was a message in the inbox,

Stay away from him if you want him alive,

don't think I'm playing..I promise I will do much worse

than what I did to your Babuji. You understand Khushiji,

You father didn't fall sick, I made him!

She dropped her phone and she knew she was going to be sick. The evil radiating from the creep's threat made the room as frigid as death. Ten minutes later, when Arnav was heading to his bedroom, he was determined to give Khushi a long lecture on her safety. He had to be stern, he being affectionate and caring towards her didn't mean she could jeopardize her life and expect him to be calm about it. He needed to tell her he was still very much of ASR as he was her Arnavji, and he was not going to compromise anything when it was about her health. As soon he walked into their room he had to put the matter of lecturing his wife aside, seeing her doubled over the washing basin, gagging. Must be the Golgapes he thought and rushed to her immediately. He held her, rubbing her back soothing and helped her to wash her face. He dipped a cloth in cool water, Khushi was trying to catch her breath when he scooped her into his arms and sat down on the side of the bed, she ended up on his lap.

The minute he touched her, she started crying. Arnav held the soggy cloth on her forehead, "stop crying sweetheart, and tell me what ails you." She didn't like the way he ordered her to stop crying, "Nothing ails me," she lied. "Ok," he agreed. "Tell me why you're crying then."

Does he need to sound so logical.

"I didn't mean any of those nice things I said about you," she announced. She shoved the cloth away from her brow and turned in his arms so he could see her frown. "Don't you dare to believe I meant a single kind word I said."

He nodded, just to placate her. "When did you say those things I'm not supposed to believe?" he knew she was under the painkillers and in such a vulnerable state.

"When you were away, I couldn't sleep so I was talking to Amma and Bauji."

"So, what did you tell them about me?"

"That you may act like Rakshas but you are not really one. I might like you little. That you make me feel safe even when I hate you. And yes I hate you don't believe otherwise. You make my heart beat fast, faster than my breathing and may be I love you little, just little and don't you dare to believe all that."

"Just little huh," he hugged her closer.

"Arnavji?"

"Hmm.."

"Do you hate me?"

"No, jaan."

"Why did you marry me? You shouldn't have?"

"Don't you think it's little too late to think about that now?"

"Well, you should have!" she wailed. "I have ruined your life. I should stay away from you!"

"What are you saying jaan? You are not going anywhere!"

"I should so that you stay safe!" she cried harder.

"Safe? From whom?"

"From him! He said he'll hurt you like he did to Bauji. Bauji..he did that to him!" she cried more drenching his shirt.

"Khushi..sweetheart, I want you to start from the beginning." he ordered. "Tell me exactly what happened." Arnav felt her shiver in his arms. He tightened his hold, hugged her close. Long minutes passed in silence. He was patiently waiting for her to calm down. He thought about how soft she was, how feminine her scent was, and how much he liked holding her in his arms. She didn't argue with him. When she finished her explanation beginning from yesterday's accident to today's SMS, he was squeezing her hard around her waist. He was frowning like devil, too. The strangest feeling came over her. Devi Maiyaa, he made her feel safe.

"What are you going to do?"

"I'll take care of it, jaan."

She nodded.

"Come let me get you to the bed."

"Arnavji..don't do anything in haste..Di..I.."

"Shh..I won't do anything in haste." He laid her down on the bed.

"Baby, do you want me to remove your saree for you?" Her eyes rounded like saucers, "well, yesterday you didn't want to sleep in it and I helped you," he smirked.

"Kya??I don't remember..I am fine and I am not taking that painkillers anymore!"

"Ok," he said immediately seeing how upset she was getting.

Arnav turned around and started to the door. There was too much to be done. He had reached the door when Khushi called out to him.

"Arnavji..why did you leave the bed without kissing me today?"

"You were in pain, sleeping, I didn't want to disturb you."

"But you never missed since we came from Buaji's house..you know after the first week..and.."

The man wasn't catching on. It was apparent he still didn't understand she wanted him to kiss her.

"Khushi, do you want me to kiss you?" he stopped her before she start her blabbering.

So much for subtlety, she thought. "Yes."

As soon as she saw him coming toward her, she closed her eyes. Arnav sat down on the side of the bed. He leaned down kissed her brow. She thanked him. He kissed the bridge of her nose. She said thank you again. She blushed red, "it's not that I want you to kiss me. It's just that-"

She quit trying to explain when his mouth settled on hers. He stole her concentration completely. His mouth was so wonderfully warm. His fingers threaded through her hair to hold her captive, although that wasn't really necessary; she didn't want to move. The kiss was gentle, undemanding. It left her breathless. And wanting. Arnav pulled back just little. "Open your mouth for me, jaan," he whispered. She barely had time to do so as he commanded before his mouth took possession again. His tongue swept inside her mouth then, to taste, to stroke, to drive her wild. He held her still as his mouth slanted over hers again and again. He felt he tremble, and in the back of his mind was the thought that he was probably scaring the hell out of her. She was such an innocent. Then her tongue touched his and she let out a low ragged moan. He could feel the passion in her response. Stunned, he was near lost of his control. He forced himself to pull back. His smile was tender when he saw the result of his touch. Her lips were swollen and rosy. He rubbed his thumb over her lower lip. "You are mine and don't ever think about leaving me." She sighed, instead. Khushi was sound asleep before Arnav reached the door.

"Khushiji's ex-fiance?"

"Yes, Akash he has been threatening her. We will talk more at office. Lets go."

"It would be too dangerous for him to try to anything in our house."

"I want him to try. I want a chance to kill the bas***d! He frightened my wife."

Akash noticed that his Bhai seemed more furious over the fact that Khushi had been frightened than he did over the possibility that someone was threatening his life, it was a telling reaction from Akash's way of thinking.
