shilpa and swasthi.
this is really brilliant.
i read the first half could not handle more of heartbreak and left it incomplete.
when my mood cleared i came back to read and i was surprised by the positive ending.
it is just great👍🏼
this is how i want the story to progress.
so now i will eagerly wait for the next part which will give me the boost to face the coming days.

Hi Friends. Hope everyone is well.

Thank you all for your patience and all your wonderful comments once again. Sorry for the delay in the update.

I won't delay this any longer, here it is the next part.

Part 4

When she was next to the bed he grabbed the saris out of her arms and threw them on the bed. He grabbed her by both arms and pulled her close to him and spoke in a very controlled tone.

"Gopi I want to tell you something."

Gopi froze for a moment. His words, the tone of his voice took her back to Holi day making her remember what had happened on that day.

"Ahem, why don't you let her go?"

Suddenly, unable to respond to her question, their bedroom door flung open. Ahem and Gopi both turned towards in that direction and saw Anita standing there with a determined look on her face.

Gopi pulled away as Anita walked in the door. Ahem didn't have any choice but to let her go.

"Ahem ... ," Anita started but was interrupted midway.

"Anita, stay out of mine and Gopi's discussion, it is none of your business," Ahem retorted trying not to shout at her for barging in uninvited.

"How can you say this Ahem? It is THIS greedy girl that we are not together today," Anita said in an accusing tone pointing her finger at Gopi.

"Anita, stop accusing Gopi about things," Ahem replied with rising anger in his voice and at the same time trying to keep his temper from exploding at Anita's accusations.

Anita was shocked to hear Ahem defend his wife. She glanced at Gopi to see her back turned to them with her head bowed.

"Ahem look at her," Anita said pointing to Gopi again, "shameless girl can't even look at us. How can you defend her knowing what you know about your wife? She could have called off the wedding after getting the letter from you telling her you were in love with me."

Gopi felt her mind go completely blank. She tried to control her mind from remembering the letter. The memories threatened to take over her whole being.

Ahem glanced at Gopi and frowned, he hadn't realized she had moved far away from him. He moved towards her but Anita was not yet finished.

"Ahem, she does not deserve your sympathy or loyalty after she proved herself to be the gold digger that she is.,"

When Ahem's eyes widened in shock, Anita continued, "Oh yes, I know she ordered a 5 lakh necklace. I also know she did not tell you about her being unable to read and write. I don't understand why you are still continuing with this farce of a marriage. She already took her wedding vows back. Why don't you make it legal and serve her the divorce papers. Don't you see Ahem? We can be together again. I never stopped loving you and I know you still love me too."

"ENOUGH ANITA!!" Ahem shouted.

Ahem was too mad too notice the stillness of Gopi's posture or the family rushing into his room to see why he was shouting.

Gopi was unaware of anything. Her mind was locked into the past. She saw herself getting ready like a newly married bride, dreaming about her husband's love. She saw his anger at seeing her in the necklace. She heard the words spoken by her husband on that night. "A gift is given to the one you love and I don't love you'I only loved Anita'you are not even worth my hatred let alone my love." Gopi felt the sharp sting of his slap on her cheek and heard him call her a liar. The sting of that slap had caused less pain than the words he spoke that night.

"Ahem why are you shouting? What is going on here?" Kokila asked shocked to see her son clenching his jaw and hands.

Kokila glanced at her vahu who had her back to everyone standing still like a statue. There was an open bag on the bed and saris strewn on the bed.

Ahem took a deep breathe to calm his temper when he heard his mom speak. He looked around to see his whole family in his room all curious to know what was happening. He looked at Anita and decided to let her in on his true feelings so that the misconceptions in her mind are cleared up. He looked around at his family one more time and was glad his sister had joined them also. He needed the key people to know that he will not tolerate anyone hurting Gopi anymore.

"Anita, listen to me carefully. I did not write the letter to Gopi before I married her and I now know that it wasn't Gopi who ordered that necklace. I know who did both of those things and I will deal with that person in my own way." He looked straight at his sister to make sure she was listening and understands that he was referring to her. He turned back to Anita.

"Next, Gopi did not know how to read and write until just few months back. Someone else read the letter and instead of telling her the truth they, told her I loved her and that is why she did not call off the wedding. I have a pretty good idea of who did this also, and that person will also be dealt with soon." This time Ahem looked straight at Rashi who looked away nervously. Ahem, once again, turned back to Anita.

"Lastly, Gopi is my wife. This fact will never change - today, tomorrow or ever. Yes, I regret hurting you in the past Anita but I have moved on with my life. It is best if you also accept the fact that we were never to be together, ever. You do not understand my devotion to my mom and my work. You will never understand my family the way Gopi understands and love them. Most of all Gopi loves me just the way I am and would never try to change me. She loved me when I hated her and she still loves me now that I understand her and her ways. You said the other day that I have not changed, but I have changed Anita, not because she changed me, but this change in me is for her and because of her," said Ahem as he defragmented his thoughts and phrased it into these points clearly and concisely.

Gopi turned back slowly when her Ahemji acknowledged her as his wife. He has done this many times in the past few months but never with this much confidence and conviction. Gopi felt her breath hitch as the feelings in her body and heart started coming back to life. Numbness was wearing off and she was once again feeling the arrows of Anita's words wounding her already wounded heart by reminding her of what she had forgotten. The pain was so great and so sudden that she felt the room spin. She heard someone shout and felt herself fall, with blackness taking over her shutting down her entire system.

Ahem turned when his kaki shouted Gopi's name and his quick movement saved Gopi from hitting the floor. He caught her in his arms, lifted her up and placed her on the bed.

"Gopi," he shook her slightly, "open your eyes."

When she didn't respond he panicked and looked around his family who had all gathered around the bed.

"Jigar call the doctor."

Ahem turned back to Gopi and continued to call out to her but he could not get her to open his eyes.

Kokila seeing Ahem's panic increase by the minute placed her hand on his shoulder.

"Ahem calm down dikra, Gopi vahu just fainted. The doctor will be here any minute."

Ahem nodded and held Gopi's hand tightly. He shouldn't have waited so long to tell her how he felt about her. He had seen the stress and worry on her face for the past two days but did not do anything about it. If something happens to her because of his stupidity he will never be able to forgive himself. "Please Kanaji don't let anything happen to my Gopi. I promise to never hurt her again like I have in the past."

The family moved aside when the doctor arrived fifteen minutes later. Everyone stood around with worried expressions as the doctor checked on Gopi. When he was finished he turned to Ahem.

"There is nothing to worry about Mr. Modi. Her blood pressure is low and she has some weakness. It also seems as though she is exhausted and hasn't been eating well. Has she been worried about something lately?"

Stunned silence followed. No one could answer the doctor's question.

"Ji doctor sahib,." Kokila finally answered in a low tone.

The doctor stood up and handed Jigar the paper he had wrote on.

"I have prescribed some vitamins for her. Make sure she takes them. Let her rest for now. She will wake up on her own when her body feels rested. If you need me again don't hesitate to call." Jigar took his bag and walked the doctor out.

One by one the family members also walked out of the room.

With this, he closed and locked the doors to his room. He walked back to bed and sat next to Gopi. He caressed her head gently and took her hand in his.

He could not help but stare at her angelic face and wondered how he could have hated her so much in the past. He made himself remember all those moments he was cruel to her in the past so that when he repents for those acts he does not forget any of them.

Gopi woke up in the early hours of the morning with no memory of when she went to sleep. She remembered coming in the room after hearing the conversation between her maji and Ahemji then things got really confusing. Did she dream what happened after coming in the room? Gopi tried to lift her hand to rub her head. When she tugged her hand she couldn't move it. She looked over and was shocked to see Ahemji on the bed besides her holding her hand. She knew she hadn't dreamed what happened after Ahemji had pulled her close to him and said he wanted to tell her something. How ironic that he had used those same exact words on Holi then forgot what happened afterwards.

Ahem felt the tug on his hand and woke up to see Gopi was awake and pulling on her hand.

"Gopi do you need something?"

She shook her head no. She did not look at him but kept looking straight up at the ceiling. Ahem let go of her hand, got up from the bed to walk around to the other side. He poured her a glass of water and sat beside her.

"Gopi sit up and drink some water."

He waited for her to sit up. He held his breath and released it when she finally moved to sit up and rest her back against the headboard. She took the glass from him and drank the water before handing the empty glass back. He placed the it back on the table and looked at her bent head. He placed his hand on top of hers.

"Gopi look at me."

She took her time but finally looked up at him. He inhaled sharply when he saw the sorrow in her eyes. He wanted to pull her in his arms and ask what he can do to erase the pain in her eyes but knew it was not that easy. There was so much he needed to tell her and there were so many things he needed to ask forgiveness for.

"Gopi I am so sorry for what happened tonight but more than that I am so sorry for the way I treated you in the beginning our marriage. There is no excuse for my behavior. I hope that some day you can forgive me."

Gopi looked up at him in surprise and opened her mouth to speak but he stopped her by placing his index finger on her lips.

"Please don't say anything just listen." She nodded her head in compliance.

"For a long time now I have wanted to tell you that I am in love with you. I know this will be hard for you to believe after telling you that I will never love you. This is the truth. I love my wife very much."

He saw her look away and realized his Gopi did not trust his feelings for her.

"The other night when you saw me and Anita outside the wedding hall it wasn't what you thought it was, I had gone out to look for you not her. Anita is my past now, only thing I feel is regret for hurting her in the past but that's it."

He could see that Gopi did not believe him but that was okay. He couldn't erase everything in one night with just words. He will have to show her how much she means to him now.

"Earlier I had gone to mom to tell her that I wanted us to make arrangements for Anita to go live somewhere else. I knew how difficult it must have been for you to see her here. I didn't help the situation by trying to protect you. I just didn't want you to be hurt by anything she said to you to remind you of my past actions."

Ahem stood up from the bed and took a few steps away from her to compose himself. He feared if he didn't explain everything to her properly she would leave him forever this time. Few moments later he returned and sat besides her again.

"Gopi, if you still want to leave I won't stop you. Please leave for the right reasons, not the wrong ones. Leave me if you can't forgive me for my past actions and just don't want to deal with me anymore but don't leave thinking I want to be with Anita. That is not where my happiness lies anymore. My happiness is with you only now and no one else."

He hoped he is able to convince her to give him another chance to make it up to her and start their life again.

"Gopi, I love you and I cannot live without you. I know that not only have I mistreated you in the past but I also forgot about the one special afternoon we shared right here in this room."

Gopi's eyes widened in shock; Ahem smiled at her tenderly.

"Yes I remember what happened on Holi and I don't blame you for not telling me when I asked you. You were afraid that I would accuse you of lying again, right?"

Gopi looked away again but not before he saw the pain in her eyes at the reminder of the day he slapped her and accused her of being a liar and a gold digger.

"I know that it won't be easy for you to forgive me and give me another chance but you don't have to decide right away. You can take your time. Just promise me that you won't leave for my happiness. Will you do this for me please?"

He hoped that she believes his sincerity and gives him a second chance.

"I won't leave I promise."

Gopi finally said softly. Ahem gave a relieved smile and glanced at the clock. It was still too early to be up and about.

"It is still to early to get up. Lie back down and rest."

He covered her with a blanket and before he could move away she grabbed his hand.

"Ahemji what happened to me?"

Ahem sat back down on the bed. "You have been exhausted and overstressed so your mind shut down to make your body rest. Dr. Joshi came and checked on you and said you needed to rest."

She nodded and closed her eyes. Ahem waited for her to fall asleep deeply before going on the other side of the bed to lie beside her.
