Vidya should avoid pitfall of doing central parts: Shabana

Mumbai, March 21, 2012, (IANS)
Deccan Herald

Shabana Azmi liked Vidya Balan's performance in ''Kahaani'' so much that she could see glimpses of herself in her. At the same time, she feels the young actress should avoid the pitfall of accepting only central parts.

"Somewhere I feel Vidya has made the daring but right career choices. I see glimpses of my own involvement with my roles in Vidya Balan," say Shabana appreciatively after watching Balan in" Kahaani".
Shabana is currently playing a wily politician in Rajkot for Vishal Bhardwaj's "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola". She took time off from her shooting to watch Sujoy Ghosh's masterpiece that is still going houseful.
"I had to watch 'Kahaani' because of Vidya. I was bowled over by her performance. As an actor, I could see she was making all the right moves throughout the film. There was not a single artificial note in her performance," said Shabana, known for powerful performances in "Arth", "Masoom", "Fire" and "Godmother".
But Shabana sounds a note of caution in the euphoria surrounding Vidya's rise to the top.

"If she continues to dominate her films, she might very soon face a scarcity of co-stars. Heroes might be apprehensive about being paired with her," said the 61-year-old who faced that situation when films featuring her in the central role co-starred Vinod Mehra or Marc Zuber.
In "Kahaani", Vidya found the Bengali star Parambrata Chatterjee sportingly supporting her heroine-centric presence in the film. But would she run out of co-stars in her future efforts at hero-giri?

"Vidya should avoid the pitfall of only doing central parts. She should also enjoy doing peripheral parts as much as the pivotal ones. Being the centre of attention could be addictive. She must learn to also be part of a cinema that doesn't focus on her but has something important to say," suggested Shabana.

Shabana has some very good advice here.

she is right!clearly in bollywood where the biggest powers are srk, salman, amir, hrithik etc! Baring amir, how many of these can even act well and how of these biggest ones want to be opposite real actresses!
but then again, if she starts doing a kismet konnection or heyy baby again then how will this vicious cycle of khan giri change in bollywood! vidya is bringing in that change!

Wow! So Vidya should dial down her talent because men in the acting profession are so UNprofessional and ego ridden that they can't take a role and make of it what they can?
A man has to be "sporting" to take a role that doesn't make HIM the center of attention?
It's called being a working actor and seriously someone needs to tell these idiot men that the world is not obligated to revolve around them---nor is the world of cinema!
This may be good advice from a practical standpoint but it makes all the men in Indian films look like weak, petty little byotches who think the world should be their mommy.
If the men can't keep up then shame on 'em.
It's up to THEM to rise, not Vidya to hold herself back.
This reminds me ot the old "A smart woman is smart enough to know when to play dumb" ploy.
Well, a smart man is smart enough to keep up too😉
----still, If Indian cinema is so dick-struck that they accept this sort of thing, I guess they'll be happy.

While Shabana's advice is good, I don't think Vidya should be cautious of the films she chooses just because actors may feel threatened by her. If they can't handle the fact Vidya is a powerful actress that is their problem. I would rather see Vidya do films like Dirty Picture and Kahaani over Heyy Baby anyday.

Her advice is good but she need to understand Vidya is very different and she fall out of place in short roles like 'Heyy Babyy'

I agree, Vidya shouldn't just temper down her choices for the icky *icky industry. it's time the men in the industry grew up and considered acting as an art which transcends gender.
In fact, the challenge should be to develop scripts and stories where both male and female characters that are important, remain the crux of the story and are instrumental ind riving the films ahead.
Maybe Shabana's advice is just a bit of caution based on the stupid ways that the industry operates in, but Vidya definitely doesn't need to lose her focus.

The feminist in me wants to applaud your post...but what Shabana said is very much true. Every time a woman wanted to do good roles she had to retire. Vijayshanti is one example who comes to mind. She did a commercially successful Kartavya which was heroine centric. But after that movie the heroes were scared to act opposite her. She couldnt bend down to lesser roles. She did a few woman centric films which were disasters and then she retired from films to join politics. Atleast her 'Kartavya' image helped her there.
Even looking at BW we have such examples. When heroines like Karishma, Raveena wanted to move on to woman centric roles they failed to get heroes.
And why blame only BW men? Arent Indian men in general mostly insecure of a smart woman?

shabana is scared becoz she hasn't seen a woman doing so well before in women oriented roles also knocking at the BO...which shabana herself couldn't do...of course shabana is a much competent actress so she is feared for Vidya...

but if u look at it Vidya has done a KKO where Shahid completely dominated a HALLA BOL which was an ajay devgan...so i dont know why Shabana is scared...Vidya probably knows what she is doing...let her do atleast she wont disappoint us
