Chapter 21

The next morning, Geet quickly got dressed and ignored the pain in her joints. Each time she moved her hand or leg, it would pain. But she wasn't going to give up. She knew this was just the beginning of the endless pain and bruises she was soon going to get.

She yelled out Maan's name to wake him up as she went out to the kitchen to make breakfast for both of them. Minutes later, Maan too came out, all ready to start the day.

As she gave him his coffee, she informed him, "Today, we have to go to office first and then you can keep me for practice all you want."

Maan nodded and in no time, both were done with their breakfast.

As they were in the car, Maan told Geet, "I was talking to Annie the other day."

Geet sensed something more than just a normal chat. She asked further, "And?"

He took a deep breath and answered, "She's adopted." That was all that was needed to say. Geet understood the rest.

"How is she?" she asked after a few seconds of silence.

"Better. She's taking it positively and looking for answers to her questions."

"Hmm. That's good. Good. Once we get back, we can help her." Geet offered.

Maan agreed and looked out the window. He gazed at the passing trees around him.

In India, Yash looked at the paper in front of him. It was the application form that Raj had given to him. He had asked him to apply at Handa's for as long as he was in India. It would give him something to do. Yash had taken the paper but was doubtful on whether to accept the post or not. He had promised to stay away from her. How could he go in front of her?

He thought for a while. He was in a big dilemma between his heart and his mind. His heart wanted to see his sister. His eyes were yearning to see her in front of him. But his mind told him that it wasn't right to break the promise. At last, making a decision, he picked up the pen and started filling out the paper.

He had decided to go with the flow for the moment. The rest will be seen when time comes. He was done with thinking too much. He will now think for himself. His whole life, he stayed away from his loved ones. But now no more sacrifices. He will protect them by staying close to them instead of far away.

Everyone sat in the meeting room, looking at the projector as Sasha put the tape in. they waited for it to load up. The face of the culprit will finally be in front of them.

Sasha informed, "We found this tape in the garbage can last night. Someone had thrown it in there not wanting us to find it."

The volume was muted as they watched a tall man entering the camera room. His back was faced to the camera so the face wasn't revealed just yet. Adi spoke up. "Seems like he cut off all the other camera's but forgot to turn this one off. Lucky for us."

Geet said, "Forward it a bit." Adi did and as it fast forwarded, they couldn't tell what he was doing in the camera room. He was in there for quite a few minutes.

Maan asked, "What is he doing?"

Geet shrugged her shoulder and then she realized. She said, "Pause the tape now!" She sprang out of her seat and proceeded towards the camera room. Maan, Adi and Sasha followed curiously.

Geet entered the room and moved the record books from the drawer revealing a secret compartment. Pressing the side of it, she opened it with ease and found the compartment empty. She threw her hand up in despair and ran her hands across her hair.

Maan asked, "What's wrong?"

Geet replied, "The papers. They were the file of the project I was working on for the last 2 years! Everything was ready and it's all gone!"

Maan understood the seriousness. "Okay, calm down. We'll get it back. Whoever he is will pay for it. But why had you kept them here? And that too in a secret place?"

She looked at Adi and Sasha and they understood they'll have to leave. They started going towards the door but she spoke up, "No. stay. It's alright."

They stayed in. she continued, "It was supposed to be a secret project for the UK's military. They wanted to have a secret place built for the hide-out. Not only is my project at stake, but also those people hiding there. Maan, we have to do something!"

Maan nodded and limited down the possibilities. "Let's go back and see who took it. Okay?"

Geet nodded and they made their way to the meeting room again. Adi quickly pressed play and the next thing Maan and Geet saw shocked them even more. They looked at each other horrified. It was none other than that father of Geet's.

Adi joked, "You both look like you've seen a ghost!"

Maan replied sternly, "That's Geet's father."

Adi and Sasha were surprised by his tone. But what surprised them more was that Geet's father was behind it all. They were never told about Geet's family ever.

Geet stood up and said, "I'm going to have a chat with him."

Maan stopped her and pulled her back. "No! You're not going to him alright? This is what he wanted. I'm not going to let you go."

"But Maan, I have to get the file back."

"The file isn't as important as your life. Understand? There's no trusting him. We'll find some other way to get it back. You're not going and that's final."

The other two in the room were even more confused on what they were talking about. What danger could Geet have from her own father? Both wondered as they looked at each other with the same expression.

Geet sat down and gritted, "Fine. But I want the file back by night. How you get it back is up to you Maan. All I know is that I have to get it back."

Maan said, mostly to comfort himself. "We will." Then after thinking, he said, "Do one thing. Go back home and don't go anywhere. I'll see you at night."

Before she could ask where he was going, he was out of the door. She sighed thinking. Was I too hard on him? He only meant good for me…
