It has a mythological significance!
Holika had a blessing that she can resist fire so she sat there holding prehlad but got burnt & eventually died!
And from that day onwards we celebrate holi annually as its a symbolism of good winning over bad!

is my answer right?

it basically celebrates the victory of good over evil
most are aware of the story of Prahlada
how his father tried to kill him with his sisters help, holika
in the process holika and his father dies and Prahlada was saved by Lord Vishnu

Holi was first celebrated when Holika, a rakshasi who had attempted to kill Prahlad by burning him in flames, died herself by the grace of Lord Vishnu, and later on in the Krishna avatar, Radha and Krishna added the tradition of spraying people with colors during Holi.

holika was killed in the fire pyre but hiryanakashyapu was killed by Lord Vishnu who cam in the form of a Narshima half man and half lion.
hiryanakashyapu had a boon from Brahma that he couldnt be killed during day or night, neither at home nor outside, neither by astra nor by shastra, neither on earth nor in the sky
so Lord Vishnu took him in his lap and killed him at dusk which is neither day nor night, in his lap which is neither earth or sky, on the porch steps, which is neither inside the house nor outside, and lastly he was killed by the strike of the claws which is neither astra or shastra.

though holi is basically celebrated to show that good wins over evil
the pyre lit on the day before holi signifies this and how holika died.
but his father also dies

also as rightly said above by JanakiRaghunath :

in vrindavan and mathura, where Lord Krishna grew up, holi is celebrated for 16 days till Rangpanchmi(which is the day we celebrate holi by spraying colours) in commemoration of the divine love of Radha and Krishna. the festivities officially usher in spring, the season of love.

Yeah truly said, as far as i know this is the reason why Holi is being celebrated & once again proved that though the good has a route of difficulties at the end good always wins over the evil😊 ...
