"How little of permanent happiness could belong to a couple who were brought together because their passions were stronger than their virtues".

Do you agree that the condition is universal?

Pride and Prejudice, written in the Victorian era and embedded in the conventional English society, perceived this word, Passion, in the older sense, which was devoid of physical proximity. The meaning of passion in today's common usage is related to sexuality, but still the universality of the idea presented in the quote is unquestionable. No matter how backward or advanced the society turns, relationships based on the foundation of passion have a very less chance of surviving the highs and lows of life. The moment of test proves the fragility of such relations, thus exposing their weaknesses.

Virtue, if perceived as defying the family values, as Lydia did in the novel, is an unacceptable practice in society, but widening the definition of virtue to individual level, virtue can be defined as the honesty with one's own self. Finding honesty, strength and lawful companionship from a relationship based on something as weak as physical attraction would be forging one's own self, thus leading to discontentment. Two people coming close because of physical and carnal pleasures cannot compete with two people who come close due to similar interests and similar ideologies. The companionship of people coming close with a will of their hearts and mind, is on a high ecstatic level, in compared to people coming close on an impulse of physical attraction.

Happiness, which is an umbrella term, encompasses all sorts of happiness an individual may seek, and an argument can be based on the fact that satisfaction of physical needs can guarantee a large amount of happiness, but again, the peace and contentment the heart seeks cannot be fulfilled just on the basis of an aesthetic sense appeal. Physical attraction is just based on abstract visions, which are bound to wither away, as told by the law of nature, but emotional bonding sprouts from the heart and soul of people, which does not wither away in any case, and which in turn guarantee a permanent happiness.

Thus all relationships based on passion and physical proximity are bound to end up with a temporary pursuit of happiness, because what the heart seeks is much more than the praise of it's body.

before i get to analysing, let me say i liked what you wrote- the story that is. i get what you are saying and well said both the chapters 33/34.
it had looed to me like nupur had the attraction component more than mayank and mayank had liked her even before kissing her but its all okay.😊 my mistake

for the above part, - passions meant in the victorian age exactly what it means today. the meaning of the words the same but the sentence has lost perhaps much of its value- open to debate.
@bold- the statement s contradictory about virtue
@ bold red- physical relations are concrete not abstract simply because the body can be seen, felt and touched. emotions are abstract

i get ur meaning its words usage im talking about. please dont take it like im commentig about the feeling that physical attraction lasts less time than real emotional bonding, neither is it about nupurs essay.
its just the words, in fact im almost sorry to be critical of something so sweet just felt like telling u ppl

thank u all!! .. 🤗
@divya dii!! .. ❤️ 🤗

@np18 - thank you so much for your precious criticism, and wrote physical attraction as an abstract thing, because it is based on beauty, which is not concrete. although is can be seen and felt, but i was talking it abstract in terms of possession and permanence - anyways , thanks a lot!!
.. keep on being frank with your comments, i am here to learn as well!! 😃

Chapter # 35

The eradication of fear from their relation re defined the beauty of it. The feeling that they were not together just because they were aesthetically appealing to each other, made Nupur's heart glow with pride. It was the only thing she craved for, to be able to make Mayank smile and now, the feeling that he was not only smiling, but he was happy with her made her almost experience the ecstasy of being able to fly.

"this is for me?", Nupur was gazing wide eyed at the small square box in her hand and Mayank was frowning, "no!, I bought it for Mrs Vasti, can I go give it to her", he glared and extended his hand to take the box back, but Nupur quickly hugged it close, "acha na sorry", she pouted, "shall I open it?"

Mayank who was frowning at her extreme excitement couldn't help sigh at the innocent picture she was portraying, "please beautiful", he leaned in and whispered which made a pink blotch appear on nupur's cheeks and she lowered her eyes.

Her hands were shivering, and being aware of his constant intense gaze and physical nearness was making her even more nervous. Finally unwrapping the gift which she made appear like a rocket science, she opened the box, in which, a silver bracelet was glistening against the black velvet interior of the box, looking like a row of stars in the dark sky.

Nupur was quietly gazing at the gift, and her prolonged silence made Mayank nervous. He had chosen it with a lot of hard work. He had got cash prize money for the best semester end project and thus the only thing he could think off was to buy his delicate princess something as delicate and beautiful as her.

"Nupur ..", he said lovingly and she raised her eyes, initiating one of another conversing lock of eyes.

His eyes had nervousness and hope. Hope that his gift would indeed be the most precious gift of her life, and nervousness for the hopes he was building, but something else evident in his eyes was fear. Fear that Nupur may not like the gift, but will accept it without complaining and as Nupur's silence was prolonging, Mayank's fear was taking over it's hope.

"yes?", she asked, holding the bracelet tightly in her hands and Mayank cleared his throat, "umm .. I didn't gift you to hold it quietly!, say something!", he blurted out bluntly and Nupur's lips broke in a subtle smile, "and I am not holding it for nothing!, come on make me wear", she glared him, raising her eyebrow and shaking her head, while Mayank who took a minute to understand was just staring back, but the minute he understood, he didn't waste a single second, and grabbing her wrist, he pulled her so she fell directly in his lap from a stone beside him.

"you want to wear it?", he asked, slipping his hand across her waist, deeply searching her eyes and, understanding the question in his undertone, she smiled, and it came from the deepest core of her heart, "I have never wanted to wear any jewel more than this", she said convincingly and threw her arm around his neck, while her right hand, the one in whose fingers was the bracelet swinging was now protectively in his hand, 'are you sure?, what about the tiffany diamonds and those rare rubies you wear?, this is just ordinary silver that too with a mix of metal in it", he spoke with an edge of a razor, and still smiling, Nupur kissed his cheek, "those tiffany's and rubies weren't gifted by you .. this", she shifted her eyes to the bracelet hanging in her hands, "is gifted by you, do you understand it's meaning?

"no", he said bluntly, "I want you to explain", his eyes were demanding and his hands lingering protectively around her waist denoted that he wanted answer, and Nupur was ready to explain, "okay", she smiled and reduced the distance .. "you know for me the metal isn't precious by conventions, people love gold, diamonds and rubies because they are expensive, they are rare, but for me precious is defined a little differently, for me precious is something you attain thinking you were not worth it .. and this", she tightened the grip over the bracelet, still looking in his eyes, "is something I think I am not worth off .. being worthy of a gift from you is unacceptable for me, thank you Mayank, thank you for considering me worthy enough of your gift .. thank you", she smiled with a glint of tear in her eyes and Mayank pulled her close, "you have no idea how worthy you are", he kissed her softly and then grabbing her hand, he kissed the knuckles and slipped in the bracelet in her slender arm, 'it looks beautiful",, he smiled and kissed her wrist while overwhelmed by the tingle of his gift around her arm, she hugged him tightly.

A while passed in the quiet hug when Nupur shifted her head to his chest and snuggled, placing her arms around him, "princess is everything alright', he asked slowly and frowning Nupur looked up, "I want to hug you quietly for a while!, Can I?", she glared and snuggled back while chuckling Mayank hugged her tight, "yes you can, I never have problems holding you so near", he grinned and started stroking softly, while blushing Nupur just started looking at her bracelet.

"this is so not fair", Mayank sighed again and this time Nupur looked up with signs of worry, "what is not fair?", she asked.

"this silence", Mayank sighed, 'I mean at least I should be rewarded with a kiss for a gift but you have turned so quiet for no ..

"I have a reason", Nupur said slowly and snuggled back, "Mayank I want you to remember the definition of precious I explained to you", she said, although slowly, but authoritatively, and feeling content and happy, Mayank hugged her tight, "well sure!, only if you remember all the definitions I teach you,. Remember you have your final SAT exam in a week!!", he diverted the topic and huffing Nupur looked up to fight, but the look in his eyes told him that he had understood what she wanted to convey, so she also gave in, " how unromantic!!, is it necessary to mention exams on our date?", she pouted and Mayank glared back,

"it IS very important because in a week my girlfriend has the most important exam of her carrier and I want her to score well!"

"I know that!", she pouted and got up from his lap and sat beside him, placing her head on his shoulder, "Mayank I am so damn scared!!", she sighed and Mayank held her hand, "it is normal to be scared, but I want you to do well, and you'll have to do it", he kissed her hand,

"and what if I don't do well", she asked scared,

"I never gave you an option beautiful, you HAVE to do well", he shrugged and pulled her for a kiss, and Nupur, who all of a sudden had turned nervous and scared, was feeling better as his lips were playing on hers'. She realized that apart from studies and practice, this was also a necessary item in her preparation. His nearness made her feel the BEST.
