The Fat and old Cricket Players.

With all respect to them (Sachin Tendulkar, Virendra Sehwag, VVS Lakshman) and all the old timers. Will these players continue to play in the Indian Team. It is high time for them to retire in a honourable way and give way to new players. It is such a shame to watch Indian team lose again and again. Maybe Sachin Tendulkar reaches his 100th century but at the cost of what? Just to make a record he has been dissappointing in the recent times. No doubt he has been a good player but now it is time for him to say goodbye to cricket and dedicate his time to training new talent. Same goes for Sehwag and Laxman too and many other players who have given their best in the past but right now are a waste in the Indian cricket team. This is not to hurt anyone but only my opinion about these players. With a new team maybe Indian Cricket gets back to its normal situation.

Yes the youth have more fire in their belly. They need to be trained and encouraged. Kick out the Fat Slobs.😆
Let the unfit ones be kicked out, they can be consultants.

Way too inexperienced, especially for Tests.

I'm probably going to be very biased in my opinion because I have been a massive Sachin fan since I was a kid, and basically the 100th hundred is all I am rooting for now.

I would take Sachin over Sehwag any day. A lot of people like him because of how his batting can devastate and tear away bowling attacks. But that is a hit or a miss. It is either something big or a very cheap wicket throwaway. There is absolutely no consistency. Sachin does have his failures, but if you graph his performances he is much more consistent. He may not be getting big scores like he used to but he consistently can put runs on the board. You can count on him to contribute at least a moderate amount at least.

The biggest problem with Sachin is that he is a sloppy outfielder. He does not dive or run as much as he ought to. However, when it comes to close fielding he is still sharp. When you factor in his age – Sachin's fitness is actually better than some of the youth. He is fast approaching 40 but his reflexes, running between wickets, and overall fielding is pretty good. His weight and girth are also reasonable. Compared to that Sehwag is more like a flabby uncle when he plays, his outfielding is sloppy and his close fielding is a hit or a miss like his batting, he makes no effort in running between wickets. Gambhir is even younger, even though he is the right weight and fitness – he still is a sloppy fielder and sloppy running between wickets.

That being said it is about time Sachin and Sehwag get phased out of ODI's. They will not be in prime form for the next World Cup. But support Sachin getting his 100th hundred. It will be another accolade or statistic, but I think it is a matter of pride India to have such an awe inspiring record and claim to a legend for a long time to come.

I like the idea of Kohli being promoted to captaincy. But as Souro said he is too young and inexperienced now. I like his attitude, especially in the short format. I can see him leading India down the road in the future. I'd say drop Sehwag from Vice Captain and make Kohli the Vice Captain.

Coming to tests, the youngsters have a lot of promise but not the mental ability and patience to transfer it to the long form of the game. There is value in still having the likes of VVS, Sachin and Dravid around because of their ability to perform in the long form. Although VVS seems to have lost it post West Indies, but we cannot forget Dravid was the only one who did anything in England. But I think we should rotate the test middle order. Play only one of the three (two max) and introduce youngsters. Their role should be to guide and mentor youngsters while batting and try to build test temperament. We are losing tests anyways, so experiment with new blood and see what combination works right.

I think the coach plays a huge part. Gary Kirsten was able to extract performance and fitness levels from the seniors as well. I think Duncan Fletcher was a poor choice. Ever since he 'gave up' on a winnable match in West Indies, I knew he lacked the ammo to successfully coach India. I think India needs a more positive coach who pushes them, who would rather lose than give up without trying. IMHO Fletcher needs to go ASAP.

I actually envision people like Wasim Akram or Imran Khan coaching India. We keep having these breakout fast bowlers who fade in no time. Someone like them could marshall these resources and not let them get wasted. I think they will also help fashion our all rounders like Irfan Pathan, Jadeja, Yuvi and perhaps even Ashwin. It is a pity people like Agarkar have crappy careers and Irfan Pathan keeps fading away a few years. A couple good all rounders will give us a lot more flexibility and rotation ability in our team.

Ok done rambling, I'm too OCD about cricket.

Is this the way that we are going to address the people who brought glory to the Indian cricket...by calling them FAT and OLD...its OK its time for them to move on...like Gavasker did and Kapil Dev did...but i really do not appreciate these adjectives used for the veteran cricketers...

Graeme Smith was inexperienced as well. Stephen Fleming is another one. When the selectors meet next and decide the test team for the next series (based on performances, not biased as usual) whose name would they pen down first - Kohli's. The guy captained the under XIX team to glory. So he knows how to captain a side. Is the most confident cricketer in the Indian team right now.

Its time Indian cricket moved ahead with a young captain. A captain that would not be ashamed to show the middle finger when required. Perhaps not the finger but would atleast be in good shape when he sways his shirt around. It would be a massive gamble. But Kohli is a confident young chap and I'm damn certain he would take Ind to more glory.

At the time Graeme Smith became captain, SA was already a force to be reckoned with even though they were going through a pretty tumultuous phase in cricket and Pollock had goofed up in the then World Cup. Also, there were many heated debates about his captaincy back then because SA had far more experienced players like Kallis and Gibbs, who, despite having questionable leadership qualities/ a passive approach (and involvements in betting scandals @ Gibbs), had good Test averages.

Even then, Smith was devoid of any 'baggage' and had got off to great scores after making his Test debut. Over the years, it was also evident that SA cricket was a prime example of the players making the team instead of the captain being the sole navigator of the ship- which, sadly, is the case with India ATM.

As for Fleming, it was more a case of NZ not being spoilt for choice after Lee Germon stepped down. He was also a natural at being a leader despite him not really having a great conversion rate with the bat till he turned 30 or thereabouts. Add to that he'd had a lot of experience in county cricket and even captained his county side before he was made the Kiwi captain.

Virat Kohli has the potential to captain India in the future, but I think he'd make a better ODI captain than a Test skipper. Has he even played county cricket and got accustomed to different conditions? The problem with our selectors is that they have royally effed up when it comes to nurturing fresh talent and encouraging them to play cricket in England.

@ OP:

No one cares about introducing a fresh crop of fast bowlers, which is actually what India is severely lacking at present. Our trundlers can only do so much, that too on Indian soil. Just look at Oz and England- their batsmen aren't a patch on ours at least when it comes to the long term stats, but they have the bowlers who can get the job done, and they also have great enthusiasm on the field. As far as fielding goes, India is the pits.

Dhoni is just not cut out for overseas Test cricket. If the BCCI had given due importance to grooming future players and captains instead of making the team use the Big Three as crutches, we'd have been far better off. It's not Dravid's, Laxman's, and Sachin's fault that people are too dependant on them for Tests. The task of phasing them out in favour of fresh blood should have been undertaken long ago.

Anyway, I think we should give the England captaincy model a shot and have different captains for different formats. In that regard I think Gambhir would be a far better captain than Kohli in Tests. He's more aggressive than people think he is and has also captained India in Tests when Dhoni wasn't around.

As a side note- W*F is up with Sachin?

I have a craptastic bad joke about Sachin's failures to get a hundred 100's - He stands with the 99%.

Actually, I like the idea of Gambhir leading tests. I think Gambhir could captain tests and Ashwin be VC.

Who would be our wicket keeper after Dhoni? Is Patel up to the task? As a Mumbai Indians fan I really want to see Ambati Rayudu in the international team.
