As i am totally southie i don't have much exposer about north indian families.but here in south india Mother in laws are friendly, understanding and even help daughter in household works ..even the ladies from villages who are not educated they want their daughter in laws well educated and working women for their sons.
My neighbor she is north Indian ,she says Southies much better when it comes to sas bahu relation ..and even the husband better understand the wife and her needs than north Indian huby..where as North Indian guys mostly listens to their Mothers and asks their wives blindly follow their mother..
is that true?jus wanna your views 😃 😛

Lucky,

I'm from the south too, but spent a major portion of my life in North India...we cannot generalize, but from what I saw through my friends, neighbors, etc : I have seen some really bad cases of dowry harassment, harassing the bahu, not letting her go to her parents' place for years, making her do all the house work, and in one case, breaking up their son's marriage and separating the bahu from her kids (this was our next door neighbor)

I do not know how other cultures and all are, but I have lived in Uttaranchal and this all was quite common.

hmm...Shweta & Lucky 😊😊

Me still single.. my experience about north indian MILs are all what I have seen in families and neighbors.. I would say its hard to generalize.. I have seen the best ones as well as the worst..

I have seen the bahus who have to follow MILs around..but by same token have seen several Bahus..who make a fool out of their MIL.. so I would say hard to say..but in small north Indian towns..yes there is lot of this ..

That said.. my exposure to south Indian culture happened after I came to US for grad school and work.. funny ..how much I learned about India and different Indian culture...after being away from India..

From my southie friends..I got to know.. that..most of their familily folks were married to their first cousins or uncles.. and though I am still a bit shocked by the concept... I was wondering if that plays some role in MIL being nicer.. since one is MIL to ones niece etc..

just a genuine question.. not making judgements 😊
