For the first time in his career, Sonu Nigam sung a classical song for a movie. The film in question is Dharm, produced by Shee tal Talwar and directed by Bhawna Talwar. It was also the first time that Sonu, who was recording the song Piya bole jiyara more...piya jag bhaye, worked with music director Debojyoti Mishra (who scored the music for Choker Bali and Raincoat). The lyrics are by Varun Gautam.
Said Talwar, "I was looking for a classical singer for this particular song. It was just a co-incidence when I expressed the same to Sonu's business manager Ben Thomas who happens to be my family friend. He immediately conveyed it to Sonu. I was a bit sceptical, as Sonu is one of the costliest singers we have but he liked both the songs immensely and it was a good gesture on his part to go out of his way to bail me out. Apart from singing two songs, he even did the alap for my film. He gave us three days during which he was in the studio for more than six hours." The film, about a pandit in Benaras who adopts a Muslim child, stars actor couple Pankaj Kapur and Supriya Pathak. The film also stars KK Raina, Dayashankar Pandey and Hrishitaa Bhatt. French Company Films Distribution, headed by Francois Yon, will represent the film that releases in October in India. "It's the first Indian film to be represented by Films Distribution. They will take my film to all the festivals across the world," adds Talwar.
