Govindbhai,

Yes Nau vari- Navvari sari is very comfortable once one knows to wear and carry it. That applies to the Non maharastrians. Personal experience. I am very fond of them.

Dear Varsha Tai,

I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. You are right, before the advent of 6 yard sarees, I think many woman used to wear 9 yaders in many parts of India. My mother and sister never ever wore a 6 yarder. In Andhra, Karnataka and Tamilnadu also all women before my generation wore 9 yarders only. I personally have not seen any Gujarati woman wearing 9 yard saree. That does not mean any thing though. All our goddesses are shown in traditional 9 yard sarees. They look so beautiful.

Dear Pallavi,

Since you said NAV VAARI I dare to think you are Marathi. Firstly do not underestimate the power of Nau Vaari saadi. All LavaNyaa Navatankees and Dombaari performance used to be done in Nau Vaari. They are amazingly fast paced performances, mind well. I think that Old style Nau Vaari sarees made Maharshtrian women look very beautiful, graceful and agile too. They could tie (padar kasaNa) the palloo and dance freely without any hinderance. As a matter of fact Nau Vaair saaree gives more freedome for movements than Gol Saaree. Our more recent warriours like Jhanshi chi RaNi, Tara Bai HoLkar and many more fought wars in 9 yard sarees. Our ancient mytohological male figures such as , Rama, KrishNa, Arjunaa, Bhimaa used to fight wearing Dhotis with kaashTaa (for lack of equivalent English word). Since each leg is wound by its potion of cloth, the legs are not constrained. I had to put my two penyys worth here. Any way, I am glad to know that Nihira performed well.

Govindji,

I am not a Maharastrian, I am a gujju born and brought up in Mumbai- Parel Area. My family is a mixture of Marati-Gujarati all my mama(maternal uncle) married to Maharastrian ladies. I know that Navvari is not a difficult and very comfortable if one knows how to wear it but Nihira wearing Navvari i can't imagine. Also we all are interested in her singing, not dancing. I didn't mean to hurt anyone, if i have done that i am realy sorry about that.

Hello Pallavi,

No you did not hurt me or any one. I wrote that informative paragraph to make other people know of a lost art. I wrote it in response to your statement that even Aishwairyaa can not dance in Nau Vaari saaree. I just want to tell the younger generation is that 9 yarder is lot more freeer to do daily chores and dance art. It was just an informative posting so do not worry. I am not hurt. Thanks for your concern.

I just saw the Himani/Nihira/Parthiv Concert in New Jersey.

The climax of the show was a duet by Himani and Nihira called "Duma Dam Mast Kalandar". It was AWSOME!!!!! Himani started the song and put so much of energy in it. Later, Nihira joined her and did this breathtaking Classical Part. Nihira has an amazing control over her voice. After Nihira finished her classical part, Himani added her own western twist to the song. She started screaming like a rock star which was really cool. Then they both did some classical parts together and finish the song. This song was easily the highlight of the concert.

I am posting the video and audio links of the song for everyone who couldn't see the concert… (it is almost 10 minutes long)

Video Link Pending

Audio link for Himani & Nihira's "Mast Kalandar" performance – only for download.

There is something wrong with youtube.
I kept trying to change it to a public video but it didn't work.
Now it is not letting me even log in.
I'll put it on a different website soon.

Dizzy..... Dileep has posted some pictures of the concert
in his post HIMANI & NIHIRA's "Mast Kalandar" Links

Pallavi ji while watching video I noticed that when Nihira sang the song she was facing public most of the time while Himani was either side wise like getting approval from someone (am i doing it right) or back side to the public?

Both sang song very well.

Hi Pallaviji,

You have written a very nice, complete, detailed update. I enjoyed reading it. It was a very balanced show. Nihira and Parthiv had common singing style and talent, and Himani's style was totally different... so there was variety and something for people of all taste and age. I think the organizer of the show was very smart in bringing these three singers together for a show. I also enjoyed the emphasis on old songs. In entire challenge mostly they had to sing new songs in order to get votes. So it was nice to hear them pick songs that were totally different.

I was also amazed with Parthiv's talent. WOW, he is very very talented, and a very good stage performer too. This was the first time I heard him. I really enjoyed that medley of old Rafi songs that he sang. All those songs were terrific.

Thanks...
Vinaya.
