As Karan Johar's remake of Amitabh Bachchan's 1990 revenge drama Agneepath hits the marquee this week, we take a look at what the film industry was up to in that year.

T
he year 1990 wasn't a landmark year for Hindi films. And yet, absurd or astonishing, there was no shortage of three things that Vidya Balan holds dear -- entertainment, entertainment, entertainment.

A year where almost every second film was marinaded in volatile action, inevitable retribution and drab dressing sense with titles that stressed on anger, danger or toxic -- Khatarnaak, Zahreelay, Naakabandi, Maha Sangram or Hum Se Na Takrana.

A year when two significant films -- Aamir Khan's Dil and Sunny Deol's Ghayal -- dared to release on the same date and went on to become the highest grossers of the year.

It is also the year when:

Salman Khan paraded in a two piece bikini for a ragging scene in Baaghi.

Yesteryear actress Mumtaz made a disastrous comeback in the David Dhawan flick, Aandhiyan.

Sunny Deol flexed his vocal chords to yell the B-word on big screen.

Madhuri Dixit emerged as the entertainer of the year with 10 releases and three super-hits -- Dil, Kishen Kanhaiya and Thanedaar.

A sexagenarian Dev Anand directed his 11th film against the backdrop of cricket. He would go on to direct eight more.

Filmmakers like Rajkumar Santoshi, Ram Gopal Varma, David Dhawan, Mukul S Anand and Indra Kumar gained prominence.

For a change, supporting actors Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor took forefront in and as Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri while leading man Jackie Shroff was relegated to the sidelines.

Rahul Roy's hairstyle became the equivalent of Jennifer Aniston 'The Rachel.'

And Amitabh Bachchan changed his voice to embody the curt spirit of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. Two decades on, current rage Hrithik Roshan is all set to recreate this iconic character with its reboot, produced by Karan Johar and co-starring Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra.

While 2012 has barely begun, here's a look at what Bollywood was like in 1990.

The highlight of 1990 for me was Rahul Roy's haircut (everyone got his cut! it was like some crazy craze!), Ashiqui & Dil songs and Ghayal!

The third one is Raaja hindustani and Ghatak. These two should have been of opposite genders. I'm sure their marriage would have lasted a long time.😆
