Chapter 11

Geet climbed into to the car, her face pensive as the driver closed the door, before getting in the car himself. She just couldn't believe the things that Rajji had told her, the accusations Gurvinder had made against Brij veerji. She just wasn't ready to believe that anyone in her family could do such a thing, and yet there were facts that were disturbing her. Channi had been missing for awhile, and if she wasn't with Gurvinder, then where was she? Then there was the increasing violent behavior of Brij veerji that she herself had witnessed. How was she to know what to do in these circumstances?

"Mohan, is there a police station near here?" asked Geet suddenly, deciding that she needed some kind of help.

"There is a station a few minutes drive from Khurana Constructions, Madam."

"Take me there first, please," she replied, causing a lot of speculation in Mohan's mind. However, he was a highly trained servant, who would never question his employer's actions, even when Geet insisted to go inside the police station alone.

Due to her upbringing, Geet was never allowed to go many places alone. Nor had she ever had any contact with the police. The fact that she had ventured into the station at all, that too by herself, showed her desperation. It was very strange to her to see all the uniformed people moving about, looking very busy. She tried speaking with a few of them, but was unable. Eventually she spotted a desk with a man sitting behind it, and thought to go there.

"Excuse me," she said, needing to repeat the words, when the officer ignored her the first time. "I need some help."

"What do you need?" he asked, not even looking up at her.

Geet was intimidated by his attitude, but she forged ahead, asking, "What do you do if someone had been killed by someone?"

"Did you see a murder," the officer asked, looking up even as he reached for a piece of paper. "Are you here to fill out and FIR?"

"No, I didn't see a murder, I just..."

"If you didn't see a murder, then what is this all about? Did you just come here as a joke?"

"No, please, I really need help. Someone told me that a person I know was killed by someone, but I don't know if it is true or not and I don't know what to do about it."

The officer looked at the young girl twirling her dupatta, and sighed, before saying, "Whoever saw the killing is the person who has to come in to fill out the FIR. Tell them to come in and then maybe we can do something."

"Oh, but she didn't see anything either," explained Geet, much to the officer's annoyance.

Slamming his pen down, he demanded, "Where did this supposed unseen murder happen?"

"Hoshiarpur."

"Go to Hoshiarpur and talk to the police there then! And don't come back here with these vague stories, taking up our time, when we have real work to do."

"Wait, please!" pleaded Geet, afraid the angry officer would throw her out. "Can you just explain to me what you do when someone comes to report a crime, so I know what to do? Please!"

"If someone comes to report about a crime, we file a First Information Report, FIR. We take down all the information, as well as the details of the person reporting the crime. If we think the report is credible, then we will investigate. But you need to be careful, especially when reporting a murder. You can get in big trouble if you tell lies to the police, and we don't arrest anyone without evidence."

"Evidence," murmured Geet to herself, after thanking the frustrated policeman. "How am I going to find evidence, when I don't actually know if anything happened?"

Geet continued to feel worried, uncertain what to do. She couldn't have Rajji go and talk to the police. Daarji would be furious if he found out, and the police would probably not be willing to do anything anyway. She almost despaired of any solution when she chanced to overhear a conversation between two strangers. A woman was thanking a man for all his help, as well as praising Babaji for leading her to his private investigation agency. Though she had been forced to sell her jewels to pay the cost, she felt that no amount of money would have been too much for the justice he helped get for her son.

This gave Geet the idea that maybe she could hire a private investigator for help. The only problem was the money. She didn't have any of her own, and she didn't feel right asking anything from the Khuranas, especially Maan. He seemed to absolutely detest her, and she couldn't even begin to imagine what he would say if she asked him for money. Thinking of him made her remember that she had been sent by Savitri to give his lunch. Quickly leaving the station, Geet returned to the car and requested Mohan to continue driving.

The Khurana building was much larger than Geet had expected. Nakul had told her to find reception, when she had asked him how to go about giving Maan's lunch at the office. Looking around the big entrance area, she saw a sign telling reception was on the fourth floor. Geet wasn't too fond of elevators, so she decided to take the stairs, even if that did mean walking up three flights. Upon emerging from the staircase to the foyer, she wondered if it was possible for the inside of a building to be bigger than the outside.

There were dozens of people rushing about, looking extremely busy. Geet couldn't see a sign for reception anywhere, so she had to ask for directions. Eventually she was told to walk through a set of doors and she would find it.
She did find it, along with the young woman working there, who seemed busy beyond imagining. Geet felt bad to disturb her, but felt she had no choice.

"Excuse me," she said politely.

"How can I help you?" asked the young woman, who looked up from her work to see Geet standing on the other side of the desk.

"I'm looking for Mr. K..."

"Thank you for calling Khruana Constructions," said the young woman in response to the phone call she had just answered. "This is Pinky in reception. How may I assist you? No, Mr. Khurana is not available to take calls today. Yes, I would try back tomorrow. Thank you. Good-bye."

Setting the phone down, Pinky again looked at Geet, saying, "Sorry for the interruption," before peering more closely at the unexpected visitor. "You look very familiar. Have we met before?"

"No, we haven't. I really need..."

"You look so familiar, I think that we must have. Maybe we went to the same school as children." Geet couldn't believe that this Pinky person thought she knew her.

"I'm sure we didn't go to the same school. I'm not from Delhi," she explained.

"Where are you from?"

"Hoshiarpur. Now, I need to know..."

Before Geet could complete her sentence, Pinky again had to answer the phone, this time taking a call from someone in the accounting department. After that, she answered another phone call from someone who wanted to change an appointment time. Geet felt very bad to be standing there as a distraction, when the young woman was clearly overwhelmed with work. She decided to look for someone else who could give her directions.

Walking down the hallway, all Geet could see were people busy at their cubicles, sometimes getting up and almost running from one place to the next. Just like with Pinky, she didn't feel comfortable taking their time. Eventually she saw a man wearing a uniform who was filling out a form. He looked much more approachable than the rest of the office workers, so she moved to approach him.

"Do you work here?"

The man glanced in her direction and answered, "Yes, can I help you with something?"

"Please," said Geet smiling, relieved to have someone's undivided attention. "Dadima, I mean, Savitri Devi had sent lunch for Mr. Khurana. I'm trying to find the way to his office, so that I can deliver it."

"Mr. Khurana's lunch? I can take it to him, if you like. I've got a piece of mail that I have to drop off, so it won't be a problem."

"Are you sure? I wouldn't want to get you in trouble," commented Geet, somehow instinctively aware that Maan would not tolerate his employees wasting their time.

"Really, Ma'am it's not problem. I've often taken his lunch to him when it's been dropped off at reception."

The man's words had Geet realizing why Nakul sent her to reception. Apparently that was where they took the lunch, and then one of the workers would see that it was given to Maan. Thanking the worker for his help, Geet gave him the tiffin, then turned around to make her way back. Before she knew what was happening, she bumped into someone, almost knocking the person to the ground.

Adi saw the young woman bump into Sasha, and knowing his college, he was sure there would be a tamasha. He decided that he better intervene before things got bad and MK found out. Sasha was just getting into her "I'm better than everyone" mode, when he came up beside her. He heard the young lady mention "Pinky" and "Mr. Khurana", which gave him a clue as to why she was there.

Adi explained to Sasha that she must be one of the new interviewees, which did not go down well with the woman at all. Knowing she was a very abrasive person, and as MK had given him the task of finding a secretary, he took charge. The potential candidate tried protesting, but he explained that she would be dealing with them, not Mr. Khurana, as he had more urgent work to do. Adi could also see that she was nervous, so he offered her a glass of water once they were in the interview room.

The way the girl answered the questions was a little odd. Adi soon found out that she was only 18 and had been doing a BA, which explained why she seemed so inexperienced with the whole interview process. She even asked them why they were asking so many questions! Of course, Sasha's bad attitude didn't help either. Adi could see that her comments upset the young woman who only wanted to be called "Geet". He did his best to put her at ease, and soon he could see a strong, dedicated personality emerging.

Sasha wasn't going to let herself be left out of anything, which Adi had anticipated. She asked Geet a lot of questions regarding her skills in relation to office work. Naturally, Sasha being Sasha, couldn't ask these questions in a pleasant manner. She very sarcastically interrogated Geet on whether she had ever used a computer, how was she at answering phones, her writing and typing skills, everything. Adi was extremely impressed at Geet's calm way of responding, and he felt that she was the one.

"Thanking you for answering all of our questions, Ms. Geet," said Adi. "Sasha and I need to leave right now, but if you will just wait here for us."

Geet tried to protest, but the woman just rolled her eyes and left, while the man insisted that she stay. She couldn't understand anything of what just happened. They asked all of those questions only for security reasons? What did answering phones have to do with security. Geet could only assume it had something to do with Maan's controlling nature, so she brushed it all off, even the mean looks the woman had given her.

She also wasn't going to stay there and wait for them. If they had any other questions, that was just too bad. Geet knew Savitri would be waiting for her, and she had already taken all that extra time at the police station. Yes, she had to leave, even if it caused security problems. Geet walked out of the room and back down the hall, hoping that no one would stop her.

She was disappointed in that hope, as she heard a now familiar voice call out, "Hey, wait a minute," as she tried to walk past the reception desk.

Pinky rushed over to her and asked, "Did you still need my help with something?"

"No, thank you. I found someone else who was able to help me. I need to be going now."

"No, yaar, wait just a minute. If you leave now, I'll be totally plagued with thoughts of trying to figure out who you are. Can you please tell me your name?"

"Geet."

"Geet, from Hoshiarpur. I think maybe I've figured it out. I just need to call someone really quick."

Geet watched as Pinky rushed over to the phone and picked it up, punching in a number quickly. Soon she was talking at lightening speed with the person at the other end. Occasionally she would glance at Geet with a smile, then continue with her conversation. In no time, Pinky was finished with her mystery phone call, after which she came rushing up to where Geet stood, throwing her arms around her.

"Geet! I can't believe it's really you! You are here in front of me after all this time!"

No Precap, but I'm sure you can guess. In lieu of a precap, please see the post below.

As I live in the US, I am not that familiar with Indian law enforcement procedures, but from my understanding of a FIR, when Geet came to the police station talking about a possible murder, the officer should have taken down her statement, even if he was not sure of the credibility of it at the time. He certainly shouldn't have been as dismissive as he was, but then neither should the police have been so dismissive in the original serial either. I decided to use a little creative liberty with this, as it can't be that easy for our heroine, now can it?

Regarding scenes similar, or the same as what was shown in the serial:

When I include scenes that we know from the original show, I will not be writing them down exactly the way they were portrayed to us. Instead I will be doing any or all of the following: writing the scene from a different character's perspective, having the characters just think about what is happening, writing a brief summary instead of including all details and dialogs, or writing scenes that take place before or after but reference something from the serial. The reason that I'm telling you this is if you read something and it seems that the exact same thing happened in the serial, that was my intention. If I want things to be different, I will explicitly include those changes in my writing. There may be some slight exceptions to this for really famous and well loved scenes (Kurbaan Hua anyone?) but even then I will try to bring some type of new dimension to it.
