we have discussed abt movies and our favourites but there is a question whose answer is always find difficult to answer...

and that question is ...

what does an average cinegoer wants - quality or box office.. and the question arises from this question gives rise to many questions..

what does an average cinegoer think before going to cinema hall? how does he know that the movie he is trusting will not disappoint him? why the hunger of giving a blockbuster has made our producers so mad, that they are on a death strike to kill creativity full time. why can't the actresses dare to be different like vidya and kangana and do meaningful roles ? why the entertainment value always rules over quality? why can't we sit and write a script that don't just make money but also bring smile to faces...

the questions needs to be answered...and the replies shall become the way to find them...express urself...

I honestly want good quality films with a bit of entertainment but have a great story something to say "Oh I love this film...it reminded me of..." or "kya acting ki usne..." etc. I guess some like watching films that are pure entertaining...And about entertainment over quality...well I guess quite a few (not questioning IF members at all lol) just like entertaining films...I'd choose quality anyday.

Excellent post.

How did this film become BO Gold! Is a statement most of us have uttered in frustration and exasperation at least once in our life. Although we submit to the notion of 'each to his own' we can not help but begin to view audiences, masses, those people whom we share our daily commute with disrespect, as they become the reason behind the degeneration of the film industry and art in general.

However in defence of the public, huge BO ticket sales does not necessarily mean one tremendous audience. A good chunk of those ticket sales are repeat viewers or as some would say 'repeat offenders.' 😆 Marketing and PR has shaped our films greatly so that they include those elements that entice or even incite a certain demographic to visit the cinema again and again. A good plot and exceptional acting may induce you to watch a movie many times in your life BUT several times in a week is unlikely UNLESS it is laced by other motives too. Desire is one of Marketing's biggest weapons though in Marketing's defence, its premise lies in supply and demand, where we must also share responsibility.

sometimes i wonder why can't fans for atleast once be honest and accept openly that their star had done a bad movie...i mean if salman does a bad movie he becomes God and the movie becomes an angel...and if it continues, who will like to motivate them to do good movies...

and yeah especially when stars like salman themselves say tht he does hit films that make money and not good films tht bring rewards...so who is basically at fault...the one who is doing it or the one who is watching and making it a moolah ?

In 3 words: Entertainment! Entertainment! Entertainment!

It doesnt matter who is providing that entertainment...Katrina Kaif or Rakhi Sawant.

The movie should be convincing and entertaining. I hate the leave your brains at home kind of genre ..A comedy does not have to be mindless...be it action, romance or drama, the movie should keep me interested, thats all I ask for :)

Quality is subjective. The definition of "Quality" differs from person to person. Someone in india who drives an auto rickshaw and has no inclination abt hollywood/foreign movies or the multiplex movies would think Singham is good quality stuff.
For most of us who have been exposed to a wider range of cinema and therefore even better cinema, its utter crap. Someone who has been bought up on a staple diet of film festival foreign movies would find Omkara mediocre stuff, while for us, its brilliant.

It depends on wht the person thinks is "good cinema"...My dad thinks hero bashing up 50 people at once is entertaining cinema, my mum hates tht and thinks srk dancing at a wedding with 50 ppl wearing manish malhotra clothes is entertaining, my brother thinks edgy tarantinoeque films like Love sex aur dhoka are entertaining. If my family alone has so many definitions of a "good movie", the entire nation would have a million more.

The average cinegoer who goes to watch a film wants a good film. He dosent care abt BO success...why would he care if the film earns 200 crores or 300 crores...its not like hes benefiting from it...
BUT

Films are Box office successes because they are considered to be "good" by the majority of its audience. The hunger for box office success comes from the fact that soo many people are living off films...right from the spot boy to the superstar to the producer, cinematographer, costume designer...everyone gets their bread and butter from films. So a film that earns well at the box office is equally important as it fills these ppl's pockets and gets them going to do more work. Why should the producers risk their money and the earnings of an entire 300+ cast and crew for someone who claims he makes "meaningful cinema"?? A film first needs to put majority of the butts in the seats and hold them there until the end credits. If it fails there, then its a useless film.

IMO, a hit movie or an acclaimed movie, both deserve the same respect because they have succeeded in their goal of what a film is meant to do...entertain the majority.

I like your point about BO films being the bread and butter of many a person. However within the realm of art, meaningful or usual movies force growth in the industry. Otherwise Indian cinema would become stagnant and by definition anything that doesn't grow is dead. For me current state of films, not just in Bollywood but Hollywood too, isn't just about money but laziness too, that 'if it looks good THEN it is good enough' maxim that plagues the whole of society. Where are the people who break the mould, think outside the box instead of just making themselves comfortable in cramped conditions? Case and point is the item number which hasn't significantly changed in 4 decades.

I agree with you about definitions. Honour is where you place it. If your definition of success means money, then by those standards most modern Bollywood movies and actors are successful. However if your definition of success entails something more substantial, affecting the way audiences and peers alike view the medium of film then there are few and far between.

Even more rare are those that do both. In my opinion I can really only think of one modern Bollywood actor and whose films belong to that last category.
