news:
Khan says the theme of the film -- extra-marital relations -- shows 'a sign of maturity of the director'. Till now Khan has only featured in more old-fashioned love stories like Dil To Paagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Veer-Zaara.
"It is a great story, with great music," he says.
Asked whether Bollywood directors produced films with NRIs in mind, Johar says, "We are an emotional lot of people and we produce films for Indians, whether in India or abroad."
Set in New York, the story revolves around the relationship between Dev (Khan) and Maya (Rani Mukherji). They are both married to different people. Dev is married to Priya (Preity Zinta) and Maya is married to Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan). However, when Dev and Maya meet, the shortfalls of their respective marriages become more apparent as they realise that they are perfect for each other. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan.
Asked whether he planned to work in Hollywood films, Khan says, "I have not been offered any Hollywood roles. I feel proud of those Indian actors and actresses who have been offered Hollywood roles."
On the song and dance routine in the film, he says, "I love the fact that Karan and (choreographer) Farah Khan always stretch my dancing skills, and create scenes that are so vibrant and colourful in all the films we have done together.
"The mood of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is very different -- it's very sensitive in some scenes and very exuberant in others. The soundtrack and the dances will take you on a parallel roller coaster to that of the film and the characters."
Johar says, "Many people view the music and dance in Bollywood films as purely incidental. I believe that the music is integral to a film, and for me, it is developed very closely within the structure of the film."
Because anything less than ordinary is simply unpardonable from a team like KANK!
Karan Johar had taken a risk at the very beginning of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' by showing Shahrukh Khan grieving over Rani Mukherjee's death. While trade pundits had called it a disastrous approach, the director stuck to his vision and the results were for everyone to be seen! With KANK, he enters the risky zone once again as the opening number of the album, the title song 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna', turns out to be a sad number. Breaking the norms of incorporating a romantic melodious number for the kick start of the album, Karan Johar, S-E-L, Javed Akhtar, Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik come up with a melodious theme number. Inspite of a painful feel to it, its strength lies in the opening note that has a touching effect made possible by few but effective musical instruments. While a piano with violins in the background form a good prelude to the number, it is Sonu Nigam's crooning that further impresses due to a distinct 'Kal Ho Na Ho' feel to it. A song where the lead pair(s) of the movie are shown to be separating from one another but still wish each other good in life and a promise of remembrance, it is Javed Akhtar saab's lyrics that spin a tale through simple words that go as:
Tumko Bhi Hai Khabar, Mujhko Bhi Hai Pata; Ho Raha Hai Juda, Dono Ka Raasta Door Jaake Bhi Mujhse, Tum Meri Yaadon Mein Rehna; Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna!
The song moves at a slow pace and turns out to be quite pleasant on ears! Yes, the experiment works as one gets curious about the film's storyline and Karan Johar's choice of subject!
'Love will find a way' – these are the opening lines in 'Mitwa', a song that would be loved by one and all who have loved Pakistani brand of music in last few months, especially the ones that have been heard in Mahesh Bhatt films ['Zeher', 'Kalyug', 'Gangster']! Opening sound of guitar along with Caralisa's crooning of 'Love will find a way' followed by Shafqat Amanat Ali [from Pakistani band Fuzon] and Shankar coming behind the mike makes 'Mitwa' a sure shot chartbuster number. The song has a good rhythm to it and though it starts off with distinct Pakistani shade, it takes a lot from Indian classical music as it progresses further. A song that has an introspective edge to it where the lead is shown searching for something unknown, unheard and unseen, it is a number that could easily belong to Indi/Paki pop genre. 'Mitwa Revisited' follows a little later and the remix version turns out to be highly trendy befitting a discothque/lounge outing.
After a sad and an introspective number, 'it's the time to disco', once again, with 'Where's The Party Tonight'! The song begins on a smashing note as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy get the groove going with funky western musical arrangements. Shaan and Vasundhara Das turn out to be a highly effective pair as they let their hair down to come up with a rendition that is a good mix of Indian and Western style. The song is loud as per the requirement of the song's setting, and an effective use of chorus in the background along with Shankar and Loy joining in intermittently, makes it a number that should be popular amongst the youth in days to come. Yes, 'Where's The Party Tonight' may not be extraordinary or a kind that would break new grounds, but such is the beauty of S-E-L compositions that just like A.R. Rehman songs, they too start getting on you after you have heard them a few times. Call it the unconventional effect!
By this time one starts expecting a bonafide romantic number to come next. The wait is over with 'Tumhi Dekho Naa' that comes quite late in the day, just like 'Kuch To Hua Hai' came only towards the latter stages of the 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. One of the best tracks of the album so far, it comes very close to the title song in terms of styling but due to a different theme sounds differently. Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik are highly effective in this poetic romantic number that has been well worded by Javed saab. Slow paced and highly effective due to a soothing tune by Shankar Ehsaan Loy who come up with yet another beautiful love song, it should be one of the highlights of the movie and promises a mushy choreography. There is certain Indian feel about it that makes it extra special and a certain winner amongst the music lovers!
It's the time to rock-n-roll along with a dash of hip-hop in 'Rock'n'Roll Soniye' that seems to be a number picturized on Amitabh Bachchan due to the way Shankar Mahadevan goes about rendering the track. If there was a 'Shava Shava' in K3G, it's going to be 'Rock'n'roll Soniye' that also turns a bit jazzy as it moves on. Young brigade joins Big B in shaking a leg or two as Shaan is the first to arrive followed by Mahalaxmi Iyer. With lines from the popular old numbers such as 'Sar Pe Topi Lal Haath Mein Resham Ka Roomal', this is a celebrations number that promises a lavish picturization with colors all around.
Much before the official release of the music album of KANK, rumor brigade has been having a field day in pulling down the album. Well, that's not something new as with every biggie comes its share of detractors. But on hearing the songs for yourself, you realize that is it NOTHING, but a rumor! The album is yet another fine product from the team that delivers the kind of music expected from it. While the 'title song', 'Mitwa' and 'Tumhi Dekho No' are the pick of the lot due to strong melodious feel, 'Where's The Party Tonight' and 'Rock'n'Roll Soniye' too have in them to be popular amongst the youngsters once their song promos are out on the small screen. One can easily expect the album to zoom to the top of the charts in the very first week of its release that should maintain its position as the song promos start coming on air.
A winning score from a winning team!
The music REALLY is good especially the title mitwa and tumhi dekho na!
WOW!
i really like it!
Not on TV, please
Here's a new strategy. Karan Johar has planned to release the music of his forthcoming release Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, without airing the musical promos on television. Karan released the music in London on Sunday, he will have one more official launch at the International Indian Film Academy Awards on June 16.
When contacted Karan says, "We wanted to release the music in this fashion because there already is a hype surrounding the film. We wanted the audience to stumble upon the songs instead of experiencing it through musical promos on television."
"I will air the music promos a week after its release, on June 23," says Karan.
So, what's the music of KANK all about? "Our music is about soul and energy," he replies.
Ehsaan and Loy on the music of KANK By now, it's a known fact that the musical trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has composed the music of Karan Johar's Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna. When it's a combination of Karan Johar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the expectations from the music of the film are sky high. IndiaFM has given the album a 3 star rating, which is a feat in itself. We spoke to the composers on their reactions and expectations from the album.
Ehsaan is more than happy with the positive review. "I think it's brilliant. We were quite disheartened on Sunday when some websites in London said that it's the worst album they have ever heard. And they wrote this without even listening to the album. It's good to know that the first review is so good!" When asked if he believes that this film will surpass the stupendous success of Bunty Aur Babli, Ehsaan says, "I don't want to compare the two albums. A song like Kajra Re was magic that happened. We had never planned it. All three of us along with Karan Johar have worked very hard on this album. We hope it does well."
Loy, on the other hand had a different take, altogether. "For me, it does not make a difference whether someone gives my music a one star or five star rating. I won't complain about either! The audience will finally decide. After all, a critic is only one person. I believe that one man's food if another man's poison. There are so many songs I like, which others might not like!" Like Ehsaan, he too believes that they have given their best. "We have tried to bring new values to the album. If it does not work, we will have to try something else, next time!"
The third person of the trio, Shankar was unavailable for comment. While Ehsaan's favorite tracks from the album are Mitwa and the title track, Loy's favorite is Mitwa. With these talented artists along with their team giving their best shot, now it's only up to the audience to make or break this album.
Shahrukh on KANK
After making inroads in the UK and US, Indian films are now becoming popular in France, Germany and Poland, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has said.
The Bollywood hearthrob, who was in London for the release of the soundtrack of his new film 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna', told newsmen that the film, scheduled to be premiered on August 11 will have a sub-title in French.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Karan Johar's first directorial role in five years, is a story of two complex relationships of marriage, disappointment and ultimately betrayal.
On the theme of the film - extra-marital relations - Khan who has so far featured in a string of super successful love stories including Dil To Paagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Veer Zaara said it showed "the sign of maturity of the director.
"It is a great story, with great music," he said.
Asked whether Bollywood directors produced films keeping NRIs in mind, Johar said "we are quite emotional people and we produce films for Indians, whether in India or abroad."
Set in New York, the story revolves around the relationship between Dev (Shah Rukh Khan), and Maya (Rani Mukerji). They are both married to different people. Dev is married to Priya (Preity Zinta) and Maya is married to Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan).
However, when Dev and Maya meet, the holes in their respective marriages become more apparent as they realise that they are perfect for each other.
Asked whether he planned to work in Hollywood films, Khan who has won more awards at the Filmfare Awards than any other Star in the history of Bollywood, said "I have not been offered any Hollywood roles. I feel very proud of those Indian actors and actresses who have been offered Hollywood roles."
Noting that Bollywood has a global audience of three billion worldwide, Khan said he was grateful to people who are kind to him.
On the song and dance in the film, he said "I love the fact that Karan and Farah Khan always stretch my dance skills, and create scenes that are so vibrant and colourful in all the films we have worked on together."
"The mood of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is very different... more sensitive in some scenes and yet much more exuberant in others. The soundtrack and the dances will take you on a parallel roller coaster to that of the film and the characters themselves," he said.
Johar said: "Many people view the music and dance in Bollywood films as purely incidental. I believe that the music is integral to the film, and for me it is developed very closely within the framework and structure of the film."
KANK is me all grown up: Johar
For someone who is meant to be terribly busy with the post-production work of his film, Karan Johar looks relaxed in his Khar office. Posters of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK), featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta dress up the walls of his office.
The film, that examines marriage and infidelity, is set for an August 11 release. But a big song featuring the entire cast is still pending and would be shot in July.
Johar has just left for London where he will launch the music (by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) of his film on June 12. "Shah Rukh is there on vacation with his family, so he will be present at the music launch," said Johar. "I will fly directly to Dubai from there for IIFA where the music of my film will be launched on June 16," he added. Preity, Rani, Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan (who play father and son in the film) will join him there.
Johar is quite excited that Sony Music will be selling CDs of KANK in India for just Rs 99. Of the five tracks and one remix, Johar, who describes KANK as "me all grown up", lists the title track and Mitwa as his favourites.
From the promos of KANK, it appears to be a much greyer film, lacking the bubblegum flavours associated with a Johar film. "With K3G, my intention was to make a big film, but now my intention was to make a good film. So the stars have to come across as their characters."
Kabhi alvida na kehna Launch at I.I.F.A
The last few days has witnessed a number of stories pertaining to the 'cold war' between Bachchan Sr. and SRK. In fact, a section of the media has gone ballistic, claiming that the entire SRK camp, including Karan Johar, has decided to boycott the forthcoming I.I.F.A. Awards in Dubai. But it's far from true! In fact, the music of Karan's eagerly-awaited KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA will be unveiled during the I.I.F.A. weekend, on June 16 to be precise. While SRK and Preity Zinta wouldn't be present at the event, Karan along with Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji will launch the music amidst the global media. Sure, the Bachchans and Karan Johar must be laughing at the gullible desk-job journos! | |

Kajol in Karan Johar's forthcoming KANK? Actress Kajol is back in action after a long time. Her most talked about film Fanaa is already creating buzz where she plays a blind Kashmiri girl. But that's not all. Now there are speculations that Kajol will continue the tradition of making an appearance in Karan Johar's films.
Karan Johar has always considered Kajol as a lucky charm for his films and for that reason he manages to get her in the film, even if it's just a 4-second appearance like in Kal Ho Naa Ho. Now the buzz is that she will be seen in Karan Johar's forthcoming movie Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.
She will feature in a guest appearance role in a song along with Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan together. The song will also have the entire lead star cast of the film including Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji and Shah Rukh Khan. This song will be shot in July.
Let's wait and watch...
Karan Johar joins Farhan Akhtar's unit! For those who believe two equally popular filmmakers necessarily need to be at loggerheads with each other, especially when they're working with the same leading man, here's news.
Farhan Akhtar and Karan Johar who are working simultaneously with Shah Rukh Khan in Don and Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna, respectively, are coming together in an unexpected way.
Amidst his intense shooting schedule in Malaysia for Don, Farhan has decided to hand over one whole day, on April 12, to Karan Johar to shoot with Shah Rukh. "Part of a song with Shah Rukh and Rani Mukerji needs to be shot in a football field, for my film," says Karan. "We were supposed to shoot it in New York, but all the football fields in NY were snowed under. So we decided that since Shah Rukh is in Malaysia, Rani and I can fly down there on April 12 with a minimal crew, to shoot the song. We've chosen a lovely football field there."
So, what's with the generous give-and-take between the two directors? "Why shouldn't we work in an environment of co-operation?" asks Karan. Meanwhile, Karan is all set to return to television with his popular talk show Koffee With Karan on Star One in October. "I would have returned much earlier. But my film got delayed… Now I'll start shooting for the new season of the talk show."
Karan says he's looking at the same guest list as the last season. "However, the guests will come in different combinations. Of course, I also plan to get some new guests this time… people, for instance, who refused me the last time. A lot of stars turned me down earlier. Hopefully I'll get luckier this time," he says. After the shoot in Malaysia, only one song featuring the entire cast will remain to be shot, for KANK. "I'll shoot that in July, then I'll be ready to release Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna in August."
