Jai knew sonali from 10 years .. maybe they were accuaintances .. in the begginning .. and then when this shebang with rosh occured ... Jai found a friend in Sonali ... !
I think.. somehow this Raaz is only related to Bani .
lots of people Fail and have to stay back and repest classes .
or due to Health reasons or other misc . reasons Have to miss out on studys for a while and then resume later .. so .. they complete late .
But of course Bani.. had to give up coz her father couldnt provide sufficient money to meet the family xpenses so she had to work to make ends meet
