Chapter 14 - Twisted & Tortured

Maan stepped back as Geet dared to look up at him, her eyes full of questions.

"If I know nothing about this, then maybe you could explain to me... Mr Maan."

Her voice sounded confident & calculated, but Geet knew how much her heart was pounding out of fear & how much her knees were shaking.

Amelia was Maan's daughter? Why was he so cold towards her, so indifferent? Why was she so afraid? Why was he so dismissive of his own flesh & blood?

Maan smirked, a smirk which turned into a serious hard set line. His voice lowered, his fists clenched in anger & he took one step towards Geet, who fought the urge to move back.

"Amelia is the product of my love affair with that woman, the very woman who broke my heart. That child is the spitting image of the woman who took my heart & tore it into two. I have spent my entire life living in loneliness, when I met her I thought she was the one who would save me. She was only after my riches, nothing more.
When I look at her, I feel sickened. Sickened because that woman had the audacity to drop her off at my estate after she had her, claiming I was the father & she was my responsibility from henceforth. How can I even believe she is mine? She could be anyone's."

"Rather than detesting Amelia, don't you think you should try to-"

"I respect you very highly, Miss Geet. But do not tell me what I should or shouldn't do."

"How is Amelia at fault? She is an innocent child, reclused from the world. A child whose mother abandoned her, whose father refuses to acknowledge her. She is lonely, just like you are."

"You are lonely too, Geet."

"This is not about me. I will accept that you are not certain of her paternity. But seeing her as a creation of God, can you not show a little mercy towards her? Can you not be her friend?"

He scoffed. "You make it sound so easy. You think I haven't tried? I fought against my past, my demons, to attempt some mutual contact with the child. But the child demanded to call me her father, she demanded love & affection, none of which I can give to her."

"Why is she so scared of you? She trembles & shuts herself off at the first sight of you."

"I threatened her," he stated casually.

"You-you threatened a child? Why on earth would you-"

"I told her to stay away from me or else I would send her away forever."

Geet gulped back the lump in her throat, tears forming in her eyes as she looked at the man before her. The very man whom her heart was daring - or rather had dared to - form an attachment with.

The same man was a ruthless, cold character who had emotionally tortured a young, innocent child.

Maan studied Geet's tears, her horrified expression, & his knuckles became white as he realised what she was thinking.

"I'm ruthless & cold, aren't I? But you demanded to know, Miss Geet. I was never a saint & never will be. I have many faults, a very dark past, & at my worst, I am the person whom you would run a mile from."

He stepped even closer, taking her small hand into his own.

"But so are you. You're the same, Geet. We're both damaged. Both lost. Both in need of that void to fill up the empty space in our hearts which will slowly eat away at our soul."

Geet whimpered as she attempted to free herself from Maan's grip, but he pulled her closer in a sudden jerk, bringing their faces inches apart from each other.

"Amelia is very lucky to have you around to take care of & dote upon her." His tone softened as he stared into her hazel eyes. "I cannot promise a fatherly duty towards her, but I will attempt to break down the hard exterior I display towards her."

He stepped away & dropped her hand abruptly, swiftly walking away back to his house, leaving Geet standing & staring after him.

Much to the estate's dismay, the Malhotras had come bac after their brief time away from the house.

Geet was particularly dreading seeing Maan & Sasha's close interactions, the moments which burdened her heart & left her stomach churning.

She was stood in Amelia's doorway, who slept serenely, lost in her own thoughts when a tap on her shoulder caused her to turn around.

"What are you thinking about?" Yash asked, placing the tea towel over his shoulder.

"Nothing."

"Liar. You were lost in a deep thought."

"I was thinking about Amelia," Geet lied.

"She'll be okay. Madhuri asked me to inform you that she needs you downstairs, the Malhotras are here & about to eat dinner."

She let out a heavy sigh, causing a chuckle from Yash.

"That bad, are they?"

"They're just upper class, snobby elites who think anyone whose dress hem isn't laced with the finest material is ten classes beneath them."

"Damn," Yash muttered, glancing down at his raggedy clothes. "I'd better not appear in front of them at all if I want to remain alive."

"Consider yourself lucky."

"No more self wallowing, Miss Geet. With a bit of luck, they might announce they're going back to their own estate."

"I doubt it," Geet replied.

Yash & Geet came down the stairs together, something which didn't go unnoticed by Maan, who was making his way to the dining room where the Malhotras were dining & glanced up to see them side by side. Yash looked particularly pleased, whilst Geet looked forlorn. She was focused on the stairs before her, when she noticed Maan from her peripheral vision & glanced up at him. He glared before retreating into the room.

Yash scurried off towards the kitchen, with Geet following. As soon as she stepped in, Madhuri shoved a big pot of steaming soup towards her.

"I apologise Miss Geet, but we're rushed off our feet here & I need you to assist with delivering the food. How is Amelia?"

"Amelia's still asleep, but-"

"Please dear."

Madhuri went back to the stove, wiping her forehead with the back of her sleeve.

Geet told herself to remain composed as she pushed the door open & walked inside, feeling all eyes on her. She placed the soup down onto the table when Sasha spoke.

"I thought she was Amelia's tutor? Is the pay not enough, that she must deliver food as well?"

Maan shot a disgusted look at Sasha, who was too busy scoffing at Geet along with her mother Savitri & Naintara. Aditya shook his head at his daughter's remark whilst Natasha sipped the rest of her soup, wishing not to acknowledge herself with her sister's cold demeanour.

Geet turned towards the door, opening it to leave the room when she heard Savitri speak excitedly. "My oh my, I am very impatient for the 20th. My daughter will finally be engaged, we have so much preparations to do darling."

Her heart sank as she realised they had already set a date. The 20th was next week. In a matter of days he would be betrothed to someone else, someone richer, classier, more beautiful than her.

Letting a lone tear escape, Geet glanced a furtive look at Maan, whose gaze was intently fixed on her, & left the room, fighting her sobs.

So maan does not want to acknowledge his child because her appearence reminds him of his past, but he is willing to be less cruel to her...thats a good start.

I'm wondering what you are going to make Maan do in terms of the Malhotras...is he waiting for any cues from Geet to accept him...or not?

Hey its rlly a beautiful story lyn n again 1 f an awsum update :)...so dis xplains d cold behavior put up by maan...bt sumhow bod geet n maan r ryt in der perspectiv...
Pls shoo away dis malhotra clan as early as psbl :P...
