Imtiaz Punjabi ' The One Man Show
With recent accolade at the ITA awards as the best director jury category, Telly Tadka spoke with Imtiaz Punjabi on winning the award for his recent project Maryada.
How appreciation and acknowledgement are not as quick as one can expect or deserve, Imitiaz is definitely happy to have received one finally. It also enlivens him as he has received it for a subject that is close to his heart.
When asked about his journey in the industry, he recounted his days in DoorDarshan as a production person with an ambition to be a writer and Director some day. He became an assistant Director with Veid Rahi on DoorDarshan with shows like Katha Sagar and Junoon. His writing and poetry skills led him to write some episodes for Junoon as well wrote for Daastaan and Chattan.
He ventured into Direction with Chooriyan and Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin is perhaps the most popular show he directed.
His ambitions are yet not fulfilled, he definitely wants to achieve and gain acclaim in the world cinema arena. Talking about his work routine, he said, long hours are made easier with a friendly unit that is like family who have impromptu parties, cook outs and fun.
His spare time activities are to Read, Write and Travel.
Three aspects that he believes to be part of his work are
1. being a creator "mother" of the project who nurtures the child and enjoys when the "kid" is appreciated
2. Exploring emotional aspect of characters in a story which otherwise in one's life is not an opportunity oft gotten
3. Editing and mixing ' to create something and then to see the final outcome that may get appreciation.
His inspiration for his work are stalwarts like Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt and in recent times he believes Sanjay Leela Bhansali creates great visuals but the scripts lack soul
Similar opinion he had for a recent film Mausam when asked about it lacking soul where the love story was concerned and the pain/longing aspect was not explored to the fullest, but he believes each director has the right to narrate the story the way he feels best.
When asked what are qualities of a good director, pat came the answer, a good narrator.
What advise would he follow related to any work he has done is to look forward and not over the shoulder.
