I was initially confused about why she tried so hard to prevent Krishna from finding out that the marriage was taking place when something could have been done to stop it.

I think that she realizes Ganga does not know what she has gotten herself into (and does not really have any other alternatives) and knows this will come to a head and wants to be there to help if and when Ganga feels ready to seek someone's help.
