Rains had just stopped, and Siliguri was up and fresh, with green trees, and all types of blossoming flowers. The schools had opened, and Naina was going to her new school, and her father took her to the head mistress and introduced her, and the little girl made a good impression on the middle aged lady, behind the desk. It was 1985 and Naina was seven years old. She was being admitted to the third standard.

In her class, Naina showed her quality, and good manners, and was well loved by her teachers. She was a bit demure, and shy. There was never a day, when the teachers had to correct her, and her books were always in order. She was being coached at home, by a nurse, from Meghalaya, a Khasi girl.

As the annual Parents day was approaching, the school was abuzz with preparations, and Naina's class was presenting a skit. The teacher asked the students:

"Girls, in a few weeks, we are going to have the Parents Day. How many of you know what it is?"

There was no answer from the children.

The teacher continued: "The Parents Day, is a special day, for your Moms and Dads. They work so hard for you and send you to school, and this is a way to say 'thank you' to them. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Teacher", they all bellowed.

"Now look, we shall be presenting a dance skit, and we want you all to join. There will be a trial in the upper hall, and all of you have to go there now. Please get ready."

The girls all put their books in the bags, and kept them in their desks. They all stood up, and marched in single file, starting from the first row. Some girls fidgeted, but Naina was cool, and walked gracefully, behind the girl in front of her, and climbing the stairs, they went to the hall. They were all waiting in a row, when their dance teacher, one Ms Sharma came in, and she wished them, "Good morning children !" and they all replied in one voice, "Good morning teacher."

Ms Sharma asked them, "Can you tell me children, how many of you like to dance?" Five children, put their hands up. Naina was quiet. Ms Sharma, put some lilting music on her player, and asked these five kids, to show how they could do it, with this music. They were a bit clumsy, but were good material on which she could work. She watched the quiet girl, Naina. She was finding her very cute, and she asked her, "And what is your name child?". She replied, "My name is Naina Diwakar Bhardwaj, teacher." "Very well, my girl. Why don't you like to dance?". "No one has taught me teacher."

The teacher found the girl quite bright, with the way she was replying. Then she asked.

"What do you do, when you do not study?"

Naina replied, "My father takes me horse-riding, on the hills, and I roam on the hills amidst the beautiful flowers."

The teacher continued, in order to find more about this little girl. "What do you like best to do, besides your studies?"

"I like to paint teacher."

"What is it you like to paint?" the teacher asked.

"I like to paint flowers, and the trees and the hills. All these are nice."

The teacher had made up her mind. She had known this girl to be artistic, and with a little help, she would soon become a good dancer too, as that too was a form of self expression, and was determined to get this girl on the stage.

The teacher then told them, what they were going to present. She said, that they are going to show a tribal dance of North East India. They all will be dressed as Adivasi Girls, and perform one of their dances.

So she showed them the first few steps, and the five girls started to watch her, and then perform the same steps. Initially, they were not perfect, but soon they got it. Now the teacher wanted Naina, to imitate their steps, but she was too clumsy, and the teacher said, "Never mind Naina, you will soon learn to dance, and will join in one of the skits we will have later this year."

The teacher asked, who else wanted to join. Five more children put up their hands, and they were called, and they too tried to imitate the steps, and the teacher found in them budding talent, on which to build.

The next few days went in giving the finishing touches to the skit. The music was selected, and the dresses were prepared and the girls performed their rehearsals, and the teachers were proud of their girls.

As the Parents Day was approaching, the head mistress sent invitations to all the parents. Diwakar and Anjali too received theirs. Diwakar persuaded his wife to accompany him to the function, and as a gesture of good will, the polite lady, offered to go with him. Naina, was groomed by her Maid, Radha and they all got into the car and drove to the school.

The school was filled with parents and their children. The loud speaker announced, and asked the guests to go up the stairs to the third floor auditorium. Soon, the parents and their children, made their way to the auditorium and took their seats.

The stage was closed by a dark red glossy satin curtain, and light music was being played on the music system. The parents were getting to know the ones sitting next to them, and talking in whispers, about the school and their children. Asking how the other's child fared in her studies, and what problems they had. Anjali was quiet, but Diwakar said, that they had not met with any difficulty.

The bell rang, and all were quiet. The head mistress appeared behind the microphone, and wished all the guests seated in front of her and thanked them for gracing the occasion. She gave them a brief resume, of how their school functioned after the reopening, and now they wanted to show, how their children had fared. The various skits were presented one after another, and when Naina's class came, she told her Dad and Mom, who were dancing and gave them their names, and told them about their dance teacher, and how nice she was.

They all clapped their hands lustily, after the dance of the third standard girls. Later, Naina took her parents to meet her dance teacher, and she told them, "Your daughter has great many talents. She likes painting, and soon, she will be a good dancer too. Hope you will encourage her." The parents agreed to do so. They took her leave, and as the function drew to a close they all left the hall, and each one went back to their homes.

It was a momentous day, in Naina's budding life.all sorts of
