Chapter 37 - The twist in the ... what??
It was deep in the night and Maan was about to drop off to sleep. Things had mapped out well that day. Geet had been silent, as they had left, but not sad. On reaching home, Vicky had informed him about the incident with Meera and his subsequent decision about the staff transport. He'd been mulling over it for 2 weeks and had come to Maan only when he had had all the paperwork sorted. Vicky hadn't needed to finish the sentence - the approval on Maan's face quite obvious.
He felt at peace. Vicky had bagged some good contracts; stuff Maan had been eyeing for a while. He was overcome with a wave of nostalgia, all of a sudden. But, it was interrupted by the buzzing of this phone.
It was Geet.
'Trekking, swimming, volleyball, singing(in the shower), watching movies, hiking, clubbing, going for long drives, travelling, choreography, reading, thrillers and mysteries, trying new cuisines and carom!! In Your Face, buddy. Beat That!!''
He chuckled in spite of himself.
M:"Whoa...B***sh*t," he replied. "You took 3 hours to make all that up? Bet you swiped this off somebody's Facebook page.''
G: "yeah yeah...Quit hedging, Khurana, What's your list?"
M: "Ok, Ok, Let me just reply to your list. Camping, swimming, bowling, (I'm not a singer and am not into movies), Hiking/trekking, ,my work makes me travel anyway, dancing, coming up with new business strategies, evolving work plans for the company, marketing strategies, martial arts esp. Tai chi Hah."
G: "You hate the movies and you have the nerve to call me a bore!!"
M: "I don't hate them, I just don't have the patience for them. And, I don't have the time for them anymore. Plus, I know you made the list up, so there's no way you can relinquish the title."
G: 'Sure!!!...'', was the esoteric response he got.
***************************
Meera had walked into KC to see the office abuzz. She had been trying to follow the reason behind the chaos but elicited no decent comprehendible answer, from a single person. In frustration, she had belted her sarcasm at a wimpy accountant and had demanded to know the reason behind it. The answer had staggered her...and she had unconsciously made to Vicky's cabin.
On reaching there, she had stood for minutes, unable to come out with a coherent sentence. A myriad of thoughts ran through her head; each putting her mind in confusion; making her gape at Vicky, while he looked at her expectantly.
A clicking sound brought her out of her reverie when she found Vicky holding his phone in the air, admiring the picture he had just clicked of her.
''Hmm...'' he said, still looking at the picture. ''I don't think bro will believe me, if I said I've seen you like this. Proof!!'' He grinned wickedly.
Instinct urged her to say something and even then, the thought, topmost in her mind, spilled forth.
''Staff transport?'' she managed to splutter out.
''Well, we don't want more such incidents do we? I don't think I'll rest till I know the ladies are safe.''
A shiver ran through her involuntarily, but she got a grip on herself.
''Right'', she said firmly; a frown still remained on her face, proving her continuous train of thought.
As she left the cabin, his voice interrupted her contemplation. ''You're welcome,'' he said nonchalantly. She walked away, a smile dissolving the frown.

Studio 77: a couple o'days later.
Maan wanted to make in inventory of the props that Studio 77 had. He had put Geet in charge of it, and had given her 2 days to do it. She had argued, immediately, that there were way too many things to finish it in such short a time.
Their rapport, post the text chat had only improved. She had spoken more to him, grumbled openly in front of him, given her opinions to him and heard him whenever he spoke. Instead of hiding herself in an empty studio, she's sit on the carpet of his office, when in need of time away from reality. Maan had caught her dozing with traces sadness on her face, sometimes. But, the instances where he found her trying to move ahead in life, were more. And he made an effort to make himself available to her, if she needed him to be. Why he was doing this for her, he had no idea. And whenever the question popped into his head, he firmly pushed it away.
She'd taken him for a long drive in her jeep, a couple of days. It had been a novel experience...he'd never sat as a passenger in a jeep, with a girl driving - and pretty well at that! And neither had spoken a word; The Pearl Jam blaring out of the jeep stereo, probably being a major reason. But, there hadn't been any need to.
And, he had unexpectedly chanced upon her laughter. His curiosity to see the varied props., had made him get Geet to take him to the dismal corner of the building, to look through the storeroom...
On entering, they had stumbled upon Zakhir n Nida, their mouths glued to each others, furiously making out in a blatantly compromising position. While Geet had cleared her throat loudly to get their attention; Maan had stared in shock, his mouth opening and shutting like a goldfish, his anger lost on the other three. The transgressors had only giggled and made themselves scarce.
"W...w...what??!!'', he'd spluttered. ''What the hell is going on in my Studio? Is this what they're normally up to?''
Geet had suddenly pealed into laughter, looking at him all red in the face.
''Chill, boss, it was harmless you know...'', she'd said , patting his arm lightly.
It annoyed him more and he'd ranted on about responsibility and random public display of hormonal vivacity, under his turf.
''Er, a secluded forgotten storeroom, doesn't count as 'public' you know,'' she'd air quoted.
'C'mon Geet, is this mature behaviour? Who behaves like that'', he'd fumed rhetorically. Her looking away from him guiltily, avoiding his eyes, had dazed him for a bit.
''You? Not, this storeroom??,'' he'd groaned.
''Yeahhh...ummm... but,...but...we never managed to get very far. You know Nik was a prude!,'' she said as if consoling him.
In response, Maan had just shut his eyes and rubbed his forehead; a sign of defeat.
It was much later that he'd realized that she'd laughed.
****************************************
The troupe had assembled in the cafeteria. Maan had informed them vaguely that there'd be an addition to the troupe that day. The competitive threat that he had assumed dissipated, had risen from the ashes and proved to be a worthy foe. Hence, he'd been forced to bring in the cavalry, in the form of more performers. He'd picked only two for the time being. They'd been auditioned and only had to be acquainted with the troupe. And so, the troupe had gathered there for a formal welcome, laughing over coffee and sandwiches. The corridor from the main studios to the cafeteria had echoed with the staccato of heels, announcing the arrival of a female.
However, there had been two entries. The second had her feet encased in sneakers, and so didn't give away her arrival.
Everything about her spelled 'homely'. She looked self-consciously at the crowd, scanning it; finally resting her eyes in one place. Her hand kept twirling her wavy ponytail and one arm clutched the end of the bag. She looked back down; a tinge of pink on her cheeks, giving away her nervousness.
The first girl however, oozed flamboyance. Her long brown hair was ramrod straight and shiny and her grey eyes glittered arrogantly from behind mascara lathered lashes. She struck a pose as she looked at the group of people assembled in front of the her.
The welcoming silence had turned hostile the moment she had stepped inside. The girl following her hadn't been given a second thought - all animosity aimed at the first.
**********************************************************
Maan had been typing some important letters, when his train of thought was scattered by Geet.
''What is that b****h doing here?'', she had spat.
Maan had only raised his eyebrows to her, his eyes narrowing at her anger.
''I take it you mean the new entries, which ones? Lyla or Isra?''
''Lyla, of course - Isra's harmless. What the hell is she doing here, Maan?''
''What do you think, Geet? We need dancers. I auditioned them this morning. They're good. And we are in dire need of talent.''
''You have no idea what a trouble maker she is. Vicky himself had kicked her out.'', she argued.
''That explains her behaviour then. '' He said thoughtfully. Then turning to her, ''Look, you're going to have to suck it up. I expect you to behave more maturely, and put work first. You have to be practical and I expect that from the rest of the troupe too.'' His tone having a ring of finality to it.
But that was the morning...
Around afternoon, Maan looked up from his work to see a rabid argument proceeding amongst the troupe, the students stood in the background, watching them. Something erupted in him as he strode towards the door and bellowed.
'ENOUGH!!''
There was an abrupt silence. The troupe finally understood where Maan Singh Khurana got his reputation from. A few quaked in their shoes, while others felt themselves diminishing in size, but nobody, could look him in the eye. They felt like perpetrators just caught red handed by the police.
He towered towards them and stared at them, his silent anger hitting them like bricks.
''This is the 1st and the last time I am going to say this'', his tone coated with menace, while his voice soft and slow. "If you fail to understand, you can takes your sorry a** back to wherever it came from. I don't care a shit, if you like each other or not. But while you are working in Studio 77, you suck it up and concentrate on doing a good job, rather than fighting like a bunch of juvenile oafs. And don't expect me to come policing you around - because I won't." Saying this he turned on his heel and walked off, leaving a few petrified and the rest dumbfounded.
So you know what the characters look like - you can fill in the image for yourself - and what do you think happens next? Any guesses? Or am I a dolt for asking.
sorry bout the delay.Sorry bout the typo. IF can be a royal pain,( you know where) at times.
love.
